That was a solid platform for a long time. I retired my X58 system just 2 years ago after years of 24/7 service. The Westmere EP W3680 (w3690 and w3670) have unlocked multipliers, easy to overclock. I ran my W3680 at an all core 4.0 completely stable. Between the 130 W CPU and the RX-Vega 64 I ran in that system, it was a real power hog when it wasn't idle! I think you may have motivated me to pull that system from storage and have some fun with it! Thanks!
Heck yeah man! That rig still sounds not that bad even today. Certainly a power hog but the vega 64 isn't incapable of gaming and the W3680 @ 4GHz... I mean hey that CPU and GPU combo is pretty good all things considered.
Also Nvidia gpu drivers seem to actually harm cpu performance on older systems. Radeon gpus perform much better due to the much smaller driver overhead. And well Radeon gpus support Mac OS too
The best way is to buy paint style razor blades, insert 4 GENTLY in between the ihs and the substrate on all 4 sides. You can then use a roll of tape, set the CPU down on top of the roll of tape, the blades should be the only thing contacting the tape roll, then blast the ihs with a heat gun. Works fine just make sure to be very careful and evenly heat the ihs
Dude, I bought a (Mid-2010) Intel Xeon W3530 @ 2.8 GHz (4 cores) Mac Pro Single CPU, have 128 GB SSD and 1.5 TB HDD. Its benchmark score is even less than the 2009 one. Does it a good buy, if I upgrade CPU to x5680?
Oh man you have one of the single CPU versions. Instead of the X5680 (or the X5675) go grab yourself a W3680. It is only single socket capable unlike X versions of these Xeons BUT it can be overclocked significantly due to an unlocked multiplier as it is based on the i7 980x. So once installed you just need to use an old version of XTU and do that fancy overclocking!
XTU is Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. It's for overclocking CPUs that are Intel but you need to use an older version for as old of a CPU as this. The single CPU version is still good especially for gaming as you can use the w3680 which can easily be overclocked to 4GHz. It'll run games like a dream
To add onto Florider here doing the pixlas mod means you can draw the maximum amount of power from the power supply that you would need without tripping OCP with the dual 6 pins onboard.
Awesome video
This is legitimately the best RUclipsr I've seen with under 1k subs, Keep up with the great content and you will get there soon!
Wow thanks!

Nice VID man! Man, I shouldve gotten a 2009 and after mac pro. I shouldve done more research before buying my 2008 mac pro.
Oof yeah I have a 2008 Mac Pro myself and yeah the performance difference with those versus THIS... well its a bit unbelievable I gotta be honest.
Xeon X5690 as same as Core i7 990x
Pretty much just no overclocking support.
How did you delid the cpu? I found some tutorials online that seem pretty safe without destroying it

@@DimondDoesTech What is XTU? and one more question is the single CPU version any good? I bought mine for just 110$

@@DimondDoesTech sounds good.
is it possible to power your card off a separate psu? gonna be total jank but it would be worth it
Yep it does work. But I would recommend pixlas mod, wich allows your to draw enough power from the Mac pros PSU for any modern Radeon card
