Hey All,
Today we are out fishing for Kahawai on the Waimakariri River. It was a cool and misty Autumn morning, but surprisingly enough the kahawai were still around and hungry to snatch at the lure.

Hi everyone. In this video I am fishing for trout at a Canterbury River in the South Island of New Zealand. I hooked into and landed a nice large Jack of around 9lb but the access to landing and releasing the fish was a bit tricky. There are some good-sized trout in this canal but they can also be difficult to catch. If you enjoyed this video, please give me a like and also subscribe to the cha...

Hi All, On todays video I am fishing for Kahawai at the mouth of the Waimakariri River. This summer the Kahawai have been a bit more of a hit or miss. The runs are not as long as they were in the summer of 2023. Quite a lot of the time Kahawai will readily take a lure that is skipping across the top of the water surface or just beneath the surface and other times not so often. It is a matter of...

There is a bit of top water lure fishing and plenty of action as we get stuck in to the Kahawai yet again. If you enjoyed this video please give it a like and also subscribe to the channel. Hi everyone. Today I am out fishing for trout at a local Canterbury River. The weather was a bit cool and windy, with rain forecast over the following 2 hours. The river conditions looked perfect and I managed to land a great-looking 6lb brown trout in the cold and rain. You will notice that there were times in the video when I stood there and deliberated on whether to release or keep the fish....

Hey all, Today started off with a fantastic sunrise and nice warm summer conditions. At certain times many fish can be very fickle and appear to be hard to catch and that also applies to the Kahawai. One minute its full on and they are on the chew, the next minute you wonder where the heck they have gone to. As you will hear in my video, it is all about trying different fishing techniques and v...

@@piggy290 Hi, middle reaches. Thanks
Couls you please give me some tips for kahawai fishing since i just started.
Hey mate. Get yourself an 8ft rod and any decent reel. eg Penn spin fisher 4500 or similar. Silver ticers and blue ticer lures seem to work best in both 22gm or 30gm. Also soft plastic paddle tails are deadly lures for Kahawai fishing. Something around the 50-75mm in either whitebait clear colour or bluish or greenish colours. Cheers
@canterburyfishingadventures Cheers mate I appreciate the help and hopefully I can catch my first kahawau
@LeoOgata-Johnston yep, if you see me out there come and say hi. I can help you out.

I got 4 salmon last year, the biggest was 5.5 pound I kept that other 3 were only 3-4 pound I released them. Yours is one of the biggest I’ve seen from last season!. Here’s hoping they ate better condition this season!
Good stuff, yeah I was pretty lucky catching that 7lber. Many caught have been smaller as you mentioned. I think they will be bigger this year. All the best.
Love your videos. Congratulations on your Salmon. Beautiful fresh run
@@kpcscience thanks for the great comment. Yep tasted good too.
do you need a license to fish there
No licence needed for kahawai.
@@canterburyfishingadventures If a ranger pulled you up and you didn't have a licence, you would get a fine because your method involves lures which could catch a Salmon or trout which are sport fish.
@JAG0071877 That is incorrect. If you do happen to catch a trout or salmon it must be released immediately unharmed.
Nice 😊 🤠👌👌🤙🤙💯💪🎣

Yeah it's near MacIntosh. The river is currently dirty, this was filmed earlier on in the year.
they look like tradespro pliers ? I would always use quality knipex to remove hooks. They grip so much better you can get at George Henry in hornby
Haha, I only use the cheap pliers on Kahawai and then use my Knipex pliers on the salmon 😂

Hey mate, it was the waimak. Thanks for the comment.
Hi is there any kahwai at waimak at this time of year chasing around white bait
Hi George, yep people are getting them on bait at the moment as the water has still got a bit of clearing to do. A week or so without any heavy rain and they will take a lure,. Cheers
@@canterburyfishingadventures cheers
Hi, do you need license if you catch & release ?
Hi, Yes you do.
Hey mate. Headed over to Christchurch mid January next year. I wouldn't mind having a crack at some trout on soft baits. Is there much action with the trout that time of the year in the Christchurch area say in the Waimak or is it not the best time of year for them? Not sure if walking the banks above the highway bridges is worth a try. Guess it's always worth a try! Thanks for the vids.
Hi John, the trout certainly are about at that time of the year but it would be best to target them early in the morning or later on in the evening as the water temperature gets quite warm and the trout are not as active. Here is a link for you on where to go. www.fishandgame.org.nz/freshwater-fishing-in-new-zealand/where-to-fish/regional-info/north-canterbury/
@canterburyfishingadventures thanks for the info! Thinking of running with black and gold powerbait as it seems a common pattern in a lot of vids I've seen. Guessing it matches some of your native fish species. Do you think that pattern would still work in lower light situations ie early morning/late evenings? Appreciate the advice!
@@JohnMathey-j6kyep it would, it is my go to soft plastic.
@@canterburyfishingadventures brilliant! Thanks again. I'll have to read up on techniques for trout. Guessing a slow roll will more or less work! Tight lines
There was so many fish at the river mouths, you offered a snagged fish a a guy who had a rod, and he took it anyway. I don't know who's fishing ethics are worse. This is my opinion and I am sticking to it. Catch a fish in any part of their body and keep it or give it away, Juts Like SNAGGING.. Many Kiwi fisherman have no ethics in my opinion.
That’s a great fish but mate that’s absolutely shocking handling, even though it swam away. That’ll definitely have some damage to it, next time keep it in the water. Quick lift for a photo and off she goes, goes a long way.
Yeah, possibly not the best handling but it was in a difficult place to try and get the fish out of the net. I do not usually land fish this way. Will be better next time
Thats NOT 8/9 pound 😂
Nice one! See you guys when whitebait season finished
@@torchucky1 Hey Chucky, yep see you then.
