I Survived My First Harescramble - My Thoughts on Racing the CRF250F
Просмотров 4,9 тыс.14 дней назад
Well, I did it! My first harescramble race is now complete and I'm here to bring you my thoughts on racing it with Honda's beginner dirt bike, the CRF250F trail bike. I discuss how the harescramble went, things like the CRF250F's lackluster suspension, whether or not the trail bike is underpowered for a harescramble race, and answer the question: would I do it all again if I knew what I know no...

Hyperlie moto. Trust me, it has the skid plate you want.
Great video buddy! Spot on about pacing!
Thanks! Appreciate that!
Great info. Pretty good finish in your first run. Hope you do more and put them up for us to watch.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed Gonna be racing another one this coming Sunday actually so stay tuned
More power isn’t always the answer my first harescramble was last year on my crf450 and let me tell ya once tired I wish I was on a 250
Haha yeah those bigger bikes with snappier power really take the energy out of ya
A good rider that can ride the absolute piss out of a crf250 can probably do better than a mediocre rider on a top of the line KTM or GasGas enduro bike.
Can confirm! My buddy is killing it on his in the A class
I'm a harescramble noob also. My thoughts. Try to race your first race on a cooler day. Its harder than many think to race over 2 hours. Try to yeild, but not stop on the right for passing riders. Eat or drink carbs, bonking is real even on a motorcycle. Nice video.
True!
So close to 2k man 🎉
We’re getting there!
I got a flatland racing skid plate for my crf250f. Definitely recommend it
I second that
Thanks for the rec!
Hyperlite moto. Trust me, it has the skid plate you want....
Everyone that races had a first one. Just remember to have fun. Not every race is a race for every rider. Sometimes it’s just survival, i.e. the Blackwater 100😂.
Haha yeah some of them can be gnarlyyyy but that was just the goal! To have fun
Great video as usual!💪🏻🇺🇸
Thanks!!
CR is an aggresive dirt bike ! Now not tall enough, get yourself a rear shock and set of tripple trees from fox race works..
It’s the crf250f The beginner trail bike. Super tame not aggressive at all. Stiffening up the suspension does help quite a bit from what I’ve heard tho
Can't hurt to have one just in case.
Yeah I’m thinking about upgrading to one that wraps around a little more
Is yamaha yz125 a good starter bike? I’m 5’2/5’3
It’s a decent option but just be aware that the learning curve on a yz125 will be a bit steeper than on something like a beginner trail bike. Also, the yz125 sits a bit taller than beginner trail bikes so you’ll have to learn how to balance the bike as well at the same time you’re learning the clutch and how the power delivers. Not entirely impossible, but just know that those are some things you’ll probably run into when learning on that bike. I made a video on the differences between bikes which may give you some more insight: ruclips.net/video/I9o67DJ7M4o/видео.htmlsi=c8lwNw8MOI_sGxWZ But feel free to drop a comment if you have any more questions! Best of luck
@@notsoupmoto thanks! You explained really well, the only video that I didn’t have to replay because I didn’t understand
@ glad to hear it!
@@notsoupmoto i wanted to ask you why you’re awake but realised, different time zones
@ haha yep on that Easter Standard Time
I have two theory’s about the kickstarter 1, Honda Likes Being more developed and they might’ve thought kickstarters are just not good enough, it’s kinda hard to explain lol 2, weight reduction Sounds stupid but it could be So I did a little research they don’t have it because of more engine parts that would be required. Requires me to push it 10 miles with a dead battery
yeah I think it's a combination of both of those. e-start technology has gotten good enough to where it's unlikely to have a failure, plus it's a heavy bike so they were probably also thinking of cutting weight. I've had my battery go dead because I left the key on but the bike would still start up when I bump started it. definitely don't have to push it 10 miles with a dead battery haha
The hard part about progressive braking is I've got to stay calm in the face of an emergency. If I panic, I'm more likely to lock up both wheels.
yep that's why it's very important to practice proper braking technique until it becomes second nature. once you do that, your default action in a panic situation will be progressive braking rather than locking them up
Wow! Finally Something That I Like to talk about, I've been Prepping since 2011, Even bought land off grid. I never really though about using a dirtbike but i guess it will come in Handy if something happens to my 4WD Truck. Thank You Very Much For Sharing this content become SHTF is Coming Sooner than Your Think 👍
Glad you liked the video!
I’m glad you slightly walked back on the suspension. But you really don’t have to “spend thousands” to upgrade it. Have Bruce’s suspension for the front end (150 bucks), or spend a bit more for used xr400 forks; and swap out the rear for 500 and you’re set. World of a difference! Flying through whoops and large rocks in a straight line, it honestly increased my confidence which in turn helped with speed. Plenty of people drive thousands of miles on these bikes to share their opinion on achieving the best bang for your buck. Give it a go, you won’t be disappointed. Guaranteed.
I totally agree and yeah the thousands of dollars thing was kind of hyperbolic haha But I guess my point was just that you don’t necessarily need the suspension upgrades to ride over rough terrain safely if you understand certain techniques for riding that terrain. Although, yes 100% upgrading the suspension will make for a much much smoother ride overall. But yeah you’re right, you could easily do a nice suspension upgrade on the crf250f for around 600-700 bucks
This clip is genuinely hilarious, the reaction 🤣🤣
Lmaoooo
I go down the edge of the road when it's that bad sometimes you can save it when it slides on ice but mostly end up on the ground just like this
Haha yeah it’s unfortunate:(
Yea I broke my wrist on this bike😢
Heal up:(
Im not ok with it only because japanese trail bikes are consistantly getting worse than their predecessors.
I can understand that. It’s unfortunate that it seems like most products are getting cheaper and cheaper
Im 6ft 2 , 260. Im 54 and just want to trail ride with my son. Is this bike too small for me?
To make yourself more comfortable on it you’d probably want to get a set of taller bars and stiffen up the suspension a bit. But for light trail riding, this bike is perfect!
Ty so much brother. I appreciate it. Love the video. That helped me make up my mind about buying that bike. I wanted the KLX300 but for the price, it's hard to beat the 250F......
Who makes a taller handlebar for the 250 F, and who does suspension work in the Houston TX area? If you happen to know. Thanks again.
Unfortunately I’m not familiar with companies in that area But if you call up any moto suspension places they may be able to do it or they could put you in the right direction. I’ve heard a lot of people online mention Bruce’s suspension
As for the handlebars, there are a ton of companies that make bars of various shapes and sizes. The crf runs a 7/8 size bar so any 7/8 bar will fit. You can also get a 1 1/8 bar to fit with an adapter.
Could you do more videos on the CRF 125 FB Please. Thank you very much.
Thanks for the suggestion! Yes I’ll definitely consider making more videos on the 125f in the future
A 2 stroke purely for the fun facter 😂
Hell yeah😂 gotta keep your sanity up somehow
That was excellent!!! You got the hang of it so fast 👏

Getting a family somewhere with a dirt bike??
Great news I’m getting back into riding Found a great deal on a 2020 Crf150r and I’m picking it up for Christmas!
Niceee congrats! You’re gonna have a blast
@ yea can’t wait!
the noise from bikes make them so impractical and they only transport ppl not things so its also just impractical
@@eatingwithoutyoutube I get what you’re saying but e-bikes are a thing now and also backpacks exist. I agree the noise factor to combustion engine bikes is a big disadvantage but I wouldn’t say it’s something to write off completely. Firearms for example are also extremely loud, but I bet you wouldn’t say firearms would be impractical in an apocalypse.
Dude with the rucksack on a mission for deliveroo
Haha for real! They gave us pumpkins to carry around for a lap and if you brought it back in tact you’d get a prize after the race 🎃
@@notsoupmoto love it keep on riding ✊
No... you'll need an adv bike... who is doing an engine rebuild after 100 hours on a dirt bike in the midst of people tracking your trail
Not me lol That’s why I said four stroke trail bike would be ideal. Maintenance intervals are wayyyyy more spread out compared to competition dirt bikes. ADV would definitely work in some cases but they massive so it would kinda defeat the purpose of getting to many places larger vehicles like atvs could not get to
I have several camo colors of spray paint I use on my rifles. If the time comes, my dirt bike plastics will be getting sprayed down to camouflage my bikes better. Another thing I did to one of my bikes is install 1913 sections for bright weapon lights and IR illuminators for riding with night vision.
Riding with night vision would be so cool! That’s a cool idea with the illuminators. Would be a neat video to make in the future
I love the thought experiment but I don’t know how practical it would actually be. My bike can be heard from a mile away and could easily be taken from me in that kind of situation
Yeah that’s definitely a big downside
dude you ride awesome, I'd suggest IF going to continue to race offroad you should pick up 250RX or WR250F or better yet 2 smoke wide ratio, I dig my YZ250X all I've rode for decades all the best
Thanks I appreciate that! I’d love to get a 250x! They’re so sick I’ve been thinking about redoing the suspension on my yz125 for woods and maybe putting a flywheel weight on it just because that’d be cheaper than buying a whole new bike. In the future tho for sure I wanna get a dedicated woods race bike
Really appreciate your videos. I’m sure it’s a good bit of work putting it all together. I’m 5’10 @ 190lb 55yo man. Been riding quads for the last 15 years or so. Currently a 700 grizzly. It’s a great machine and rides like a Cadillac. I’ve gotten an itch to revive the adventure and adrenaline of a dirt bike. Before I’m even more too old for this sh*t. Being aware of an aging body comfort and control are very important to me. My concern would be power and handling long term. The agility and ability to quickly clutch up the front wheel to clear obstacles. The crf seems to be a very capable and fun ride. I’ve yet to be able to sit on one. As long as it doesn’t feel like a toy I’m 75% sold on it. I did sit on the 2024 wr250f and was on my toes. That bike was incredibly loaded and even more so in 25. But it’s 4000.00 more than the crf250f and that alone will create fear of damaging it, let alone controlling the power. Unclear if it can be dummed down enough with mapping etc. to get to the skill level required to utilize all that wr has to offer. And it seems to have all the goodies. Yet having watched many hours of video the down low power delivery is more finicky and harder starting. Barriers to learning, comfort and control. Somewhere in the middle of the two models. Is the crf worth investing performance upgrades into? Or is the platform ultimately too limited? And better looked at as a training tool preparing for an altogether different bike to grow into? Its a lot of money either way.
@@dctrdredge2139 thanks for the comment! I’d say if you just plan on riding for fun and you mainly ride on quad trails and not a whole lot of technical stuff, the crf250f is more than adequate and yeah from what I’ve heard, with just a few suspension upgrades and some gummy tires it makes it even more capable. I’ve found that it’s just so easy to ride which makes it much more enjoyable and therefore I want to ride more. If you get the chance to sit on one, I think that’ll be the deciding factor. If you’re okay with the smaller sized bike then I think it’s a great choice.
Are you riding in NJ?
Nah PA
@ I was close lol.. one of the best places I’ve ridden was in PA. “Lost Trails” near Scranton. If it’s in your area i definitely recommend giving it a shot.. a lot of good technical trails, rocky hill climbs, and beautiful scenery.. I found a trail that ran next to a crystal clear mountain stream for a good couple miles.. 🫡
Definitely gonna have to check that one out! Thanks for the tip I’m in western PA so that would be a bit of a trek but definitely doable
Yeah until you’re 2 gallons of gas runs out mid city
Nah fam that bike I’m riding lasts for hours You can easily get 40+ miles on a tank
That's why you keep the vitamin water bottles full of gas in your backpack.
Pro level strat
It’s basically an updated XR-250R and they have always been a great trail bike.
Would love to get one of those!
I honestly don't feel like writing a lot of stuff but I just wanna say. Great video, I also LOVE the apocalyptic genre and talked about exactly this with my brother recently. Having a fuel-efficient off road bike like a dirt bike or even an ADV bike would be a really useful asset if this did happen. Of course, in any everyday situation, an apocalypse would be horrible, but occasionally the thought does tickle a little bit. All things considered, it could be kind of cool. Apparently I did write a lot but as I said great video, you earned a new sub. Definitely underrated.
Haha yeah I agree! Definitely would suck and don’t want it to happen but would be kindaaaaa cool 👀 in a strange way Appreciate the comment and glad you enjoyed!
@@notsoupmoto If you want to experience lawlessness and fighting for survival, just go to Mexico. You'll be glad we have civilization when (if) you come back.
@salazam Don’t hate on Mexico dawg. Not cool 👎🏼
@@notsoupmoto Ok Brazil, same difference. It's all 3rd world below the border.
@salazam U should stop watching the news and just live your life man
Great video! You mentioned it being easy to steal a dirt bike if you were to leave it alone, but, as far as a vehicle goes, they are by far the easiest to hide, just get a decent size scrim, tip the dirt bike on its side, and throw said scrim over it and some leaves over that, and voila, you have an inconspicuous pile of leaves that no one will be any the wiser to unless they walk directly into it. And even if you don’t do that, it’s not like theft isn’t extremely likely anyway in a scenario like that, no matter what it is; dirt bike, car, food, medicine, you name it. Even now when the times are good(ish), there’s still the potential of your things being stolen. My point being, it isn’t necessarily a disadvantage of dirt bikes and more so an unfortunate reality for all of your possessions, given a situation such as that. (Call me ~political figure~ for how much I ramble pointlessly)
Very true! And I agree, not necessarily a disadvantage just to dirt bikes. I hadn’t thought of it that way. Thanks for the input!
No one knows what a scrim is, dude. And I won't have a dictionary in my bug-out bag.
@@salazam Pretty sure everyone on RUclips has access to many, many online dictionaries. But, since I’m nice, kinda, it’s a type of camouflage which essentially amounts to a textured piece of material (what exactly it is depends on who you get it from and what the quality of it is) with either holes in it, or it’s kind of cut to be designed like leaves. It’s pretty good on its own for something the size of a person when layered with other types of camoflauge (snipers and ghillie suits, kinda), but for something the size of a dirt bike or larger, it could benefit extremely well from being coated in leaves or other plant matter. I’m no camouflage expert so that’s a pretty amateur explanation, but as I said, we’re on RUclips, pretty sure you have access to the internet, and even if you somehow don’t have the two of those together, guess what, I know for a fact there’s also RUclips videos detailing scrim and its use cases.
You definitely didn’t have to do that haha but thanks for the explanation it was very helpful 🙏🏼
@@notsoupmoto You sir are very welcome!
I think a 2 person team with one person on a bike and one on like a utility atv would be the best combination for an apocalyptic scenario
So true you’d have way more ability to carry more weight with the ATV but could still scout ahead and clear trail on the dirt bike
Oh yeah, the UTV would be huge, or even an ATV
Dirt Bikes for Prepared Citizens by Dirty civilian Yeah I like the genre of media as well or how useful all the safety equipment would be against zombie bites lmaooo
that's a dope video! cool channel as well. i'll have to think up a dirt bikes vs zombies video next haha
I was going to comment this! They also made a video about electric dirt bikes (“E-bikes for prepared citizens,” the title is, I believe) and a third video comparing the two and weighing out the pros and cons (that one was titled “Dirt bikes vs e-bikes for prepared civilians,” I think).
I’m gonna be testing out the surron light bee and ultra bee soon so be on the lookout for videos about them!
@@notsoupmoto I believe that it was one of those that were Dirty Civilian was using, they look pretty sick! I wouldn’t personally buy one now with their limited range and long charge time (which I am sure will approve eventually), simply because a typical dirt bike typically has two to three times the range and can be filled up in seconds at the pump or a minute with a gas can. Though I can definitely see the advantages; lack of a clutch and general lack of maintenance for beginners who have extra cash to throw around is great. That just doesn’t appeal or apply to me, though, since both of those would carry over to my car when I get one (I want to do my own maintenance and ideally get one with a manual transmission), and I’m low on personal funds
@@Cringetoefur yeah they’re definitely not for everyone but I’m also excited for when technology improves and some of the range issue gets taken care of
I don't understand why you don't have more views and subscribers!!! I love your content
appreciate that! glad you're enjoying :)
