Hello!
Welcome to my channel! I'm taking a different approach with this channel unlike some of the other audio channels who provide subjective product reviews. I'm more interested in seeing how these speakers are constructed, TS parameters of the drivers, and their crossover designs. I think knowing this info is much more informative than some subjective review by a person I don't know. But I will still provide my own subjective reviews of the products I do look inside videos of. :)

A Review of The Cerwin Vega LA365 Flagship Speaker -- It's good. Really good!
Cerwin-Vega is back with a new line of speakers called the LA series. Here in this video I will be reviewing the flagship model, the LA365. This is the first time in 16 years that a new line of speakers has been developed by Cerwin-Vega with all three brands being under the same roof again (Mobile, Home, and Pro). If you haven't heard, Cerwin-Vega Mobile has purchased Cerwin-Vega Home and Pro from Gibson about 3 years ago. So how do the new LA365s sound? In this video I will test them in a variety of room sizes and give you my listening impressions on how they sound during movies and music.

$349.00 each that's what I paid for my CV HED U-351 in 1980. Like to try out a pair of these and compare them with my 44 year old U-351.
H can’t say out ,but this is a cheap speaker with CHEAP parts
Unreal the bullshit that Focal is putting out for some of their speakers. It pisses me off. Because they clearly have the ability to make outstanding speakers and the ONLY reason for cutting these corners is purely to squeeze every nickel out of the customers pocket. There is no excuse for a company like focal to EVER not use T nuts on their speaker. Their cos lt for t nuts would literally be maybe $.10 per speaker. How many speakers do you have to sell to make cutting that corner worth it?
When you unscrew, you should loose all the screws a little before unscrew them all
This one vs the JBL Stage a130? Has anyone compared both? People tend to really love the a130. If anyone can comment I'd really appreciate. I'm planning one getting one of them soon. Thanks.
At the sale price, you wont find a better speaker than the JBL Studio 630.
@@generationbehindhifi Thanks
After all said and done, you have to actually suggest something. Don't you think😊
Nah... I'm not here to sell anybody on anything. This channel exists to show people what they are getting for their money. It's up to them to decide if it's worth it or not.
I have a warfdale sw-150 sub that's dying and I am looking at this sub and my amp is 7.2 so I am thinking of buying a pair of theses What do you think?
8" inch woofer beams much earlier than 6.5 inch woofer MA used to use for bookselfs. It gains more bass, gives up some mid range sound dispersions. MA inflated prices from a few gererations of $599 to $1400. My silver RS1 had a MSRP of $599 and 6.5 inch woofer.
I really appreciate reviewers that give spec results of the speakers. Great job here. Thanks!
You do a great job, explained to everyone. What would you choose, Polk xt20 vs. Heco Aurora 300? (they are at the same price in my area)
Thanks. For me it would be the Heco Aurora 300.
Did you try them with the grills on? Maybe the harshness up top would be tamed a bit...
Can you make a video compression between them and monitor audio silver or Bronze 100!
Im very happy with these speakers. Really nice speakers for the money. What did you upgrade you speaker lugs with?
Good to hear. They really are impressive for the money. I bought a some terminal cups from the below link and then used the binding posts from them as well brass nuts to install on my LA365. I like these binding posts are much better than the factory ones. www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/terminal-cups/input-cups-nb-cup/
@@generationbehindhifi Thank you. Yeh while these posts aren't terrible, there's definitely better. I think I'll upgrade mine too.
@@MuffDiver71 No problem! My main beef with original binding posts is I couldn't get a good grip on them to tighten them down so I swapped them out.
@@generationbehindhifi Yes! I was wondering if there was a special tool for that. I ended up just using the end of my wire strippers to get them snug. I was nervous about overtightening them though.
Wow really cool video. It’s amazing these big ticket speakers are really cheaply made. Thanks for ripping apart your pair for everyone’s benefit 😂😂😂
No problem! :)
Anyone have tried upgraded crossovers from Rush Speakers? Are they any better? Thanks
There is actually only 1 iron core inductor, the other 3 are air core.
Someone has been watching GR research. He did the Aurora 1000. I have the 700 so they are a different model.
Are these Polk XT20 good for Side/Rear surround speakers?
Yes. These will be fine if you're already using the bigger XT series as front mains.
@@generationbehindhifi I actually have the 2xJamo S 809 Tower front-facing speakers with Klipsch R-120SW Sub, are those bigger XT the XT60? Are they better then my jamo s809? Going to buy the ELAC Uni-Fi 2.0 UC52 Central speaker soon and i was looking to some side surround speakers to complete a 5.1 setup and these Polk might be the ones if you are saying so, if they drop the price a bit more.
@@xCyAx I would highly recommend that you keep your front soundstage (L, C, R) all that same brand. If you really like the center from Elac, then pair it with Elac left and right speakers. Why not get the matching Jamo center to compliment your S809 speakers?
@@generationbehindhifii read that jamo s 81 central and jamo s801 side speaker are really bad. Jamo s803 bookshelf side speaker was in consideration but i dont know. I also heard ppl saying elac central is really good and its a 3-way central speaker, no video reviews on the central speaker though.
@@xCyAx For rear surrounds matching isn't as important but for the front soundstage it is. Its up to you, but you might notice the Elac might sound a bit different then the rest of your front soundstage. You could always order from a place that has a great return policy and do your own testing?
Lurv the red surround
Thanks for a straightforward review. I'm wondering are the ultra-evolutions better than the older ultra's, as there is a $500 price difference between them.
Sure, no problem. You must have skipped through the review? Because I talk about that very thing in this video.
@@generationbehindhifi I went back and watched the video again, but I didn't catch a reference to how they compare sound wise to the ultra's.
Cerwin Vega is back : ) and doing great so far. i find that the design is a bit of a mismatch, the box if elegant hifi, and the drivers are party. i wish they leaned more towards either directions.
" Ultra Evolution" using a polyester cap and not a polypropylene on the tweeter?
Did you see the "MET" stamped on the capacitor in the video? That stands for metallized polyester film.
@@generationbehindhifi That is what I'm saying... a speaker in their Ultra Evolution line should have a polypropylene cap in the tweeter circuit not a MET.
@@Chuck-- IMO I think the cabinet and diamond tweeter more than make up for it. The cabinet construction and tweeter are the best I have seen and heard in this price range so far. Changing a cap on a crossover board is easy, but redesigning a cabinet that sings or replacing a tweeter that is subpar isn't. IMO I think SVS hit a homerun with these.
@@generationbehindhifi I have the SVS Utra Center (original) and am not satisfied with the sound quality. I've considered the GR Reseach crossover redesign with high quality parts, but do not trust that it will perform like I want. I question how someone in 2-3 days can design a x-over network by computer models and not listen to the results b4 selling it.
utter garbage white van speakers
Can't believe CV is still using those red foam surrounds that rot in about 6 years
Who told you the surrounds are made from foam? The surrounds in the new LA series are made from butyl rubber.
Cerwin speakers suck! Made in china
I have q150 can't believe he said they don't bass
They don't. They only have a 5.25" driver.
@@DIYDanCars I get plenty of bass out of them
If you buy speakers and then have to butcher them and Jerry Rig them with new parts then you probably bought the wrong speakers to begin with
You must be new to this channel. I tinker with all my stuff. If that's called "butchering and jerry rigging", then so be it. I guess we all enjoy this hobby in a different way.
I set up my tower speakers to large in the settings of my Arcam AVR10 . What's the difference between large and small
It has everything to do with bass management. This setting tells the AVR whether it should divert low frequencies (bass) away from the speaker and reroute them to the subwoofer or if it can send low frequencies to that speaker as well as the subwoofer. If your speakers are set to small, then the low frequencies will be diverted to the subwoofer. Hope this helps.
Whether I set my speakers to small or large on my AVR, I still have independent crossover settings I can ascribe to each speaker, so in this circumstance would this setting actually matter? Just curious. Thanks for everything you do brother!
@@Audiomainia2310 Every processor is a little different with crossover settings and customization. My Rotel has a ton of crossover settings that I can play with, but when if its set to small, then crossover will only go down to 50Hz. If I set it to large, then it will go much lower or receive the full audio band (1Hz-20KHz). I would assume yours is probably similar? Hope this helps.
Welcome back! Glad to see a video post from ya! Understand busy professional life.
Thanks! Yeah, I'm trying to do at least one video per month until things cool down at work. Bare with me as a navigate this crazy work/youtube life. I already posted a sneak peak of my video on instagram. :)
Still remember when my brother bought a pair I was about 6-7 years old and loved these. Obviously didn't have a clue about sound at the time I just loved the looks and size
I had a similar experience when my buddy from high school received his pair. The huge size and bass output had me drooling, but back then that's all I cared about (bass)! Good times!
For me it is them cashing in on their name. Selling to people that want the name brand.
I heard these next to the SVS Ultra Evolution and SVS wiped the floor with them. IMO
I'm not surprised by your assessment at all. The Ultra Evolutions are a phenomenal speaker for the money. IMO SVS hit a home run with them.
@@generationbehindhifi I agree I have had my black oak veneer pair for a week now and I love them. I listened to alot of bookshelfs up to my price point of $3000 over about 3months and I put about 4 hours of listening to them over a couple of days before I pulled the trigger and bought them. I could not be more happy. For the money I heard nothing like them at least sub 3000 grand. Note: of what I have heard so far.......... but for the price. The hit a grandslam.
I would love to hear them through an AVR without any fancy processors or amps. People buy speakers at this price generally can’t afford separates.
I did talk about this at the 9:06 mark, but no sound demo with my 20 year old Harman (rated for 55watts per channel). The LA365 has a sensitivity of 91dB so they are very easy to drive. Any halfway decent AVR should have no problems driving these.
@@generationbehindhifi My apologies I may have not heard that. It’s 3am where I’m from and I have the tv turned down so I don’t wake my wife. Lol
@@ofcourseimfullofit No worries, John. :)
Thanks for the video. I had a pair of CVs in the early 80s. My first pair of speakers that didn’t come with the stereo system. They put out a lot of sound and a ton of bass. I’ve always been a bass man and still am with my current music setups. Rock on!
Awesome review, as usual!
Thanks, Jim!

@@CarlVanDoren61 They are sold.
These speakers look like they were designed for clubs, and not for a home setting. They should cut back on the excessive logo placement as its a bit overwhelming.
They won't appeal to everyone, but the true Cerwin Vega enthusiast seems to love their looks. I did a pole on this very subject back in December and an overwhelming majority were in favor of their looks. I especially like their curved cabinets, which I don't think any other speaker manufacturer offers at this low price point.
Straight to the garage
I love the look of them. Classic CV. You dont see the speakers when the cover is on.
Great job on the review! I think you should contact Vega again and see if they will send you one of there big dogs! Either the SL15 or XLS15. There really isint any reviews out there on there newer bigger stuff. 👍🏻🔈
Thanks! The XLS-215 model appear to be beasts from the specs. When I was a kid I would have killed for a pair of those monsters. I bet if enough people reached out to Cerwin-Vega that they might actually send me a pair to review. :)
@@generationbehindhifi I will send them a E Mail.👍🏻 The older version of that speaker the CLS actually measured quite well it was designed by a pretty famous speaker engineer. I forget his name. Not sure how much changes were made when it went from the CLS to the XLS. But I bet it’s still pretty good definitely due for a refresh though
@@JR-ho5qm Thanks! That's interesting about the CLS series. I will have to do some research about them and see who designed them. I can't remember what version my friend had in high school (E series perhaps?), but I do remember they were very bass heavy even with the tone controls set to their neutral positions.
I really wish cerwin Vega all the best. I mean, I’m a huge fan and has some of the old models. But this LA series is a bummer for me. They are not designed by cerwin vega, they are Heco models. Just google Heco Victa Prime 702. I was really hoping for some new powerful stuff when I heard the mobile department had bought the name back. But this is just sad for me. I hope the next series will be in the same category as their legacy products..
Yes, the LA365 is based off the Heco Victa Prime 702, but they don't appear to share the same woofers. Now I'm speculating on Cerwin Vega's financial position since they are not a publicly traded company, but my guess is they spent a significant portion of their cash position to purchase back the Mobile and Home Audio division from Gibson. Because of this Cerwin-Vega will probably be sharing some designs with other manufactures while using their own drivers until they can be in a position to design their own products. Heco makes some great products and I wouldn't let that discourage you. If you want to support them, then I would recommend giving the LA365 a try because they are very nice speakers for the money!
@@generationbehindhifi I get that.. they need cash flow to hopefully be able to put out some old school power models. I’m a European and Heco has been around some 40 years. So nothing bad about them. They deserve more attention than they get. I’m happy GR research Danny had a go with them recently and liked them. It’s just that I’m a cv fan and have been hoping for years.. I like cv not for their accuracy but for the fun, the punch, the power, the loudness and so on. So… I’m still waiting for something cool from them. That’s why this colab kinda bummed me
Great video of the almighty SB 3000 and makes me appreciate mine even more! I've been jamming a pair for the past year with my KEF LS50 Metas and love the sound 🤘
May I suggest that you send this over to Gr Research in texas for a proper crossover design. It will help us all out. I own a pair too, and ive been waiting for someone to send a pair to Danny at Gr research
Why not send your pair over there?
Hi, I liked this video since I'm in the market for book shelf speakers. I like a tight sounding speaker. I listen mostly to Dave Grusin, Four Play, The Piano Guys etc that sort of music. In your opinion do you feel that these speakers will satisfy my needs? Also, when you will be doing the upgrade? Thanks!
Hello! The KEF Q350s are one of my favorite affordable bookshelf speakers on the market. I really love the uni-q driver and think it sounds great. I think you will be very happy with these speakers as long as your not trying to fill a large room. If you're placing these speakers in a large room, then I would highly recommend that you pair them with a quality subwoofer. Work as been crazy busy so the videos have been few and far between. I have the upgrade video all filmed, I just need to find the time to edit it. Hope this helps!
Hi, Thank you for your reply. I'll be waiting for the upgrade video when it's available!. Hopefully, I'll get a notice when it's ready. Thanks again, Howard.
