In this video I review my REL HT 1205 subwoofer. I go over the specifications, features, what I like, and what I don't like. If you're on the hunt for a dual purpose subwoofer that can provide great output for movies while also providing great sound quality and transient response for music, then the REL HT 1205 might be the subwoofer for you, and here's why...

I purchased a REL T7i several yrs ago & couldn’t be happier. A superb sub for both music & movies. They can rattle my kitchen cabinet on some programme material. Awesome! The high level connection provides a totally seamless integration with my B&W Cm6s2.
I have 2 of these in my 2 channel system.Cornwall iv are my main speakers.
hello, I bought a Rel ht1205 also on sale for 550euro 6 months ago, it's a great price for Europe. It was supposed to replace the Svs sb12nsd 400W Rms equivalent of the sb2000. In a small area, the rel works better, although it does not go as low as the svs, but also its bass does not extend so much You can hear a better variety of bass than in the Svs model and it is easier to set up. Both are great subs.
My listening habits are 70/30 in favour of two channel hence the reason why I decided to go with a stereo pair of Rel t5i subs, mainly to help my sonus faber stand mount speakers go full range. But to be honest my movie listening experience can do with a little bit more depth. One things for sure if I do decide to introduce a third subwoofer, it's most certainly gonna have to be of the same brand.
Thanks for making and posting such a detailed video. It's always nice to look inside the components! Cheers 👍
No problem! Thanks for watching!
No question that by adding the second subwoofer in the back of the room it really enhanced the 3 dimensional theater experience. Now I'm curious what a 3rd subwoofer would do if I added it on the other side of the couch.
By adding a 3rd subwoofer you will only add a 1.5 dB gain to your system...
@@Echo-jg8is I would imagine you are correct, especially if all 3 subs has the same diaphragm service area. It's actually the same when adding a second sub to a first sub, one really doesn't gain much other then evening out the bass throughout the whole of the room. But in my particular case I'm using a stereo pair of 8" musical subwoofers. They only go down to 32 Hz which is preferable for my type of listening habits!.
The reason why I'm thinking of adding there the rel 1205. Will be for home theatre duties but mind you I would only want it on for home theatre duties! That's why I'm not going to make a decision until I reach out to Rel acoustics for advice.
@@totalplonker824 Due to the room you have, I would sell the 2 subwoofers you have and invest in 2 more powerful Rels...personally adding a 3rd more powerful sub just for movies would be my last choice for your system...
One should always choose a subwoofer(s) for room size and listening habits.
The rel t5i stereo subwoofers I'm using are not just perfect for my small 13 × 11.5ft livingroom but they're also perfect for my listening habits. Don't forget I'm using the high-level connection (via speakon cable) for my sonus Faber speakers for them to be able to go full range and of course using the .1 LFE (via RCA) for movies.
Got to remember 95% of music only goes down to 30 Hz anyway. If my listening habits was 70/30 in favour of movies, rather than 2 channel music then I probably would've taken on your advice.
I got my 2 at £449 im in love with them 2 for the price of one these are my babies, my 2 Wharfedale SW150 are in my office for music i still love them and im so please i can have them for music in my office/music place.
I can really recommend that you try a Rel subwoofer with high level connection to your center channel. It's amazing how much of a difference a full range center channel makes to the sound.
I would love to if I had the space. I have heard from others like yourself that it really does make a pretty big difference on the center. Thanks for the feedback!
I worry im overpowering my 2 Rel 1205s, the pioneer mic setup really makes it loud and the driver moves like crazy not to mention everything in the house rattling like mad, i love the bass but worry its up to much how do i know how high it should be set, is there a better way say like a better mic or something?
First of all let me say I love your videos you're very smart and knowledgeable but one thing I have to say is I wouldn't trust the SPL app on a phone may I suggest getting a cheap one that is a standalone unit you can find them for pretty cheap
Daniel knowing the size of my living room do you think I will need two subwoofers?
Two at least. Maybe 4. ;)
Where did you acquire the component cabinet from..... Thanks
I'm assuming you're talking about the cabinet that has my McIntosh equipment in it? If so, that cabinet is made by Standout Designs. Last I heard they went out of business during COVID. However, some of their ex-employees started this company: bawoodworksllc.com/pages/standout-designs-media-console-customers
I couldn't resist the sale price of this sub, the MK2 was tempting as according to some reviewers with the improvements made by Rel its even more transparent and musical, but i couldn't justify the 35% price increase even with a sale discount of the new model. So i decided to buy 2x ht 1205 mk1 model's instead of 1 mk2. Quick question? I have a standard stereo amplifier with pre outs, do i use 2x rca Y spliters on the back of the preout of the amp or do i just daisy chain both subs for better sound. Not sure what will be best. Do you think the new model's are that much better, i have my doubts Thanks.
Yeah I think you made the right choice going with 2 × 1205s rather than 1 × 1205 MK11 especially if you haven't owned a rel subwoofer before!
I would imagine 2 x RCAs would be the way to go but whether if they're going to be independent will depend on whether you've got dual independent subwoofer outputs. If you haven't got the manual try Googling it, one never knows. But to make absolute certainty that you are indeed getting the best usage. Why not reach out to rel acoustics. I've always found them most useful.
@@totalplonker824 thanks for the response I'm not sure what you mean about 2 independent sub outs. I have a standard amplifier not a HT receiver. The 1205 rel only has RCA in and out, so do I just daisy chain one sub to the other with RCA cables or do I Y split the 2 RCA connectors from the line out on the integrated amp (audiolab 6000a great little amp) and run these to each sub
@@carlitosgomez71 that sounds like a nice little amp. If this was my setup I would use RCA to the left and RCA to the right and so long as the levels are matching, I would imagine that's the best way to go. At the end of the day you can try either way, they're only line level so you can't cause any damage!
Hi, should l add the second sub for stereo music? Would Noticable sound improvement?
Adding a second sub will even out the bass throughout the whole of the room. Basically no more moving your head a few inches to the left or right to pick up the fullest sound! But if you happen to be a critical listener best to get one of the same brand.
Adding 2 subs would normally give a better room response giving you a fuller more 3d soundstage with less null spots, but this is dependent largely how big your room is and its shape and furnishings. You should also get a higher sound level but not double the performance
Loved your review - clear and relevant information. I use a REL T9x for music listening using high level connection. REL also allowed me to have black baffle and white baffle for extra £65 (you need a black baffle if you are using a projector).
I just bought the ht1205 for £450 new what a bargain it's £750-850 normally. I wanted the t7x like my brother but couldn't say no to this offer
Same here! At the sale price they sold out quickly.
I'd argue that for an audiophile you wouldn't want a DSP in your subs since you would be doing it yourself in preamp and a built in DSP adds an unessesary ADA conversion in the signal chain.
A built in DSP does make for a quick and easy integration with a home theatre system.
I'd argue who determines that an "audiophile" wouldn't want a DSP.
I also advocate for tone controls. Does that make me less of an audiophile too?
Kupiłem 1003 brzmi drzewem.
how did you hook this up ?
Using the sub out connection on my processor and then using the left and right inputs on the subwoofer.
Here in Greece, this REL Sub goes for 885euros and the Polk XT12 you reviewed a few months ago goes for 350 euros. The SVS3000 goes for 1600euros. So for the price of one SVS, I can almost get 2 REL HT1205, or 4 Polk XT12s and enough change to also buy all the cables I need for them.
My understanding is that at those prices, although the SVS is clearly the better sub, and REL is also a better sub than the Polk, unless your budget is high enough to get at least two SVS subs, (2 subs are always better than 1 for more uniform bass and better control of room modes), you will always be better getting 2 RELs or even better, get 4 Polks since 4 is the ultimate number of subwoofers needed for maximum uniformity of bass in a room (reference: Harman/JBL paper on subwoofers, and Earl Geddes paper on subwoofers).
So my conclusion is that getting 4 Polk XT12s will be better than getting 1 SVS or 2 RELs and getting 2 Polks will be better than getting 1 REL for the same price.
Since you have (had?) all 3 of those subs, do you agree with this?
I do agree with this statement to an extent. It really depends on what you're after. If you're looking for the ultimate in bass output for movies, then 2x HT1205's would definitely be the better option. If you want the ultimate in sound quality and the ability to tune the sub to your room (DSP), then the SVS SB-3000 is hard to ignore. The SB-3000's driver is leaps and bounds above the rest, in fact it's not even in the same universe! Definitely checkout my look inside video on the SB-3000 if you haven't already. I talk about the anatomy of the SB-3000 driver in that video and it contains a lot of cool tech that the others don't have. IMO I would much rather have 2x HT 1205's or 1x SB-3000's than 4x XT12s, but that's just me. If you got the money for 4x XT12's, then I would recommend you go for a much higher quality sub like the HT1205 or SB-3000.
I already have a Monoprice Monolith 12 that I got last year on Black Friday for around 600 euros (a real bargain), sitting in the middle of the front wall (plus a smaller 10" in the middle of the right wall, playing at lower volume just for room modes control and doing a great job at that) but unfortunately no more space for a second sub of the same size.
I was really thinking about getting one of those Polks at 350 euros to put in the back left corner next to the couch for some kick along with a MiniDSP for better control of the multiple subs. Unfortunately, not enough budget for a REL at 885euros and the MiniDSP should be all I need for Low-end management and it will work for all my subs. @@generationbehindhifi
@@spiroszaharakis2648 In that case an extra sub would definitely help with additional bass effects during movies. I recently added two subwoofers on either side of my listening couch and it really made a tremendous improvement during movies.
Everyone has different budgets so if you can't go with a REL, then the XT12 isn't a bad option for budget minded consumers. I was pretty impressed with the XT12 especially for how affordable it is. If you do go with the XT, I would suggests spending a few extra bucks on some damping material to bring this sub to the next level. :)
