I recently purchased a JBL 550P subwoofer for under $200 delivered to my door. If you have seen my look inside video on this subwoofer, then you know I was very impressed with it's construction. So that got me thinking, is it possible to upgrade this subwoofer so it can compete with subwoofers costing $500 or more? The goal is to create a great musical subwoofer that has great bass definition and superb transients. In this video I talk about Qts, Le, and other TS parameters which are important when choosing a subwoofer driver for your enclosure. The video is a bit long and technical so hopefully it isn't too boring.

Hi Mike! I have the footage I just need to find the time to edit it. Work has been crazy this week, but I'm planning on having it done in the next week or two. Thanks for watching!

Love this. Unfortunately, I look at sound systems in open spaces, so I look for ported subs and look at 21 inch speakers as.they.push twice the air that a 15 inch does. Pi r squared. When pushing outside, you need a deeper box and bigger cubic feet.

Very nice project. I know how confusing diy audio is if you furst start. But there are plenty of good resources. Snd above all, you will make experiences and learn from them

The improved freq response in the review video is with the drivers replaced? Or can I mod the sub without replacing the driver?

    • @generationbehindhifi
      @generationbehindhifi  Год назад +1

Correct! You will have to replace the driver with the same one I bought if you want the same frequency response curve.

Parts Express has a 500-watt dsp plate amp, and while I don't see any dimensions, it looks like it'll fit perfectly in that box.

Great Video, and effort, but you are forgetting one HUGE HUGE thing. When you model the subs on your computer for the deep bass, you are NOT factoring in that almost all subwoofer amps have built in equalization, that varies by frequency. In other words, most sub amps, have about 5-8 db of boost somewhere between for example 30-40 hz or there abouts. So your calculated bass on the 10" JBL driver, is true for the driver alone, but not when connected to their specific amp they use. You can only truly see the bass by measuring the combination of driver AND amp, as they are a paired "unit" and rely on each other.

Hi Kevin! Thanks for the comment! Sorry! I was under the assumption that anyone who is watching this video is probably aware that if they enable any type of EQ or bass boost function, then the response curve will change. Just like the response curve will change on your front mains when you adjust the tone controls on your AVR or processor. At the end of the day its impossible for me to cover every possible scenario in every video, but I think I did a pretty good job of covering the basics and what to look for. I will try and do better next time and I do appreciate the comment.
      Merry Christmas, Kevin!

@@generationbehindhifi Think you are not understanding me. Subwoofer amps have BUILT in EQ, that is not user engaged, but it is on all the time. It is part of the amp circuit and not defeatable. That is how they get such deep bass out of a relatively small subwoofer box. Almost all sub amps using EQ, as a matter of fact. Not something the user does, but its on all the time, and boosts ONLY the deepest bass several decibels. That is why when you modeled the bass response, it did not go all that deep when using the T/S parameters. You forgot to factor in the built in subwoofer amp EQ that extends the response usually to around 30Hz or so.

You should check out the Polk audio psw505 it has 300 watts to 460 watts very powerful for a 12 inch im curious to see what the inside looks like

@@generationbehindhifi no worries the only thing about the Polk psw505 i recommend you put rubber feet onto them since you have wooden floor because they have wooden feet or at least if you have carpet idk

As I said on the last video of this sub…was thinking about picking two up. I did. Now I’ll follow your journey further.
I haven’t hooked them up yet as my AVR arrives today. The older 550P’s had speaker level inputs so I assumed I could try them out when I got them using my stereo receiver (Sony STR-DH190) and apparently I overlooked the fact that the new ones only use RCA. Doesn’t matter…just means I had to wait because my theater is getting upgrades anyway.
I currently have no plans to upgrade components (driver or amp), but I’m excited to see how this CSS SDX10 performs for you. I see it’s fairly power hungry so I wonder about the factory amp handling the sub. I’m not saying I will copy your upgrades but if I do upgrade the driver down the road, I may seal up the box (was thinking some nice thick plexiglass and use an external amp to drive them.
This of course is down the road if I find that they aren’t to my liking.
I get the new receiver today along with a couple other deliveries so I will be cleaning up and arranging my dedicated space and we will see how it all works. I’ll need to spend some money on acoustic treatment for the space next.
And I’ll be able to open up my old AVR (Sony STR-DG720) and determine the cause of its failure. Not worth fixing, but definitely fun to play with.

I think you will be very happy with two of them! The JBL 550P is by far the best bang for the buck I have ever seen in this hobby.
Interesting... I never knew they offered the 550P subwoofer with high level inputs because the model I received only had stereo RCA or LFE inputs.
So far the amp is doing just fine with the SDX10 and offered pretty decent SPL too. I will be doing a SPL video showing the before and after results and I think viewers might be surprised by just how much dB i gained with this new driver.
Thanks for the comment and happy tinkering!
