A Look Inside Cerwin-Vega's Brand New Flagship LA365 Speaker

  • In my look inside videos I tear down the speaker and then go over the cabinet construction, TS parameters of the drivers, and crossover design.
Cerwin-Vega is back with a new flagship tower speaker called the LA365. This is the first time in 16 years that a new line of speakers has been developed by Cerwin-Vega with all three brands being under the same roof again (Mobile, Home, and Pro). If you haven't heard, Cerwin-Vega Mobile has purchased Cerwin-Vega Home and Pro from Gibson about 3 years ago. So how good is the new LA365 constructed?
All of my sound demos and unboxing videos are on instagram.

No expert here, but I know what I like. The best system I ever heard in a bar setting, not a dance club, was in the famous revolving bar in Gatlinburg Tennessee, which proudly advertised a Cerwin-Vega system. There were only 4 people there that night and it sounded really, really good. Always had a soft spot in my heart for the brand. I'm ordering these, especially with your discount!

They ordered it from Heco in Germany ,
Go check heco victa prime 702 !
Precisely the same with red surrounds and a printing on the dust cap,
It can be that is made by order with precise specs given from Cerwin Vega ,….but at the price that is sold i doubt that .
Nothing wrong with Heco speakers by the way , great speakers and value for money ,
Great driver quality ( the tweeter is the weak link ,……but at the price there are no miracles)
I only think that is a lot of lack of innovation from a brand to do a move like this ,
Seems like a desperate plot to regain market to me ,
I know I am going to pay for the criticism ,….but hey .,it’s life ! :)

I haven't heard this speaker. Liking what I'm seeing. Multiple drivers w/ 2 dedicated to lowest bass (air cooled vented with bucking magnets), pulp cones w silk domes, non-parallel cabinet sides with multiple cross braces, apparently a well made cross-over board, and nice gold plated dual binding posts. If I was in the market I'd give these a listen. I'm betting C-V will find a good market for these as they're giving a lot of quality for not much jack.

I had a pair of Cerwin Vega's back in the 1990's, and I was in college and had also bought a brand new Ford Escort (you can laugh), and the 10" Cerwin Vega speakers both of them fit perfect in my hatchback. It was Good times. :) I could pop my hatch and cover any backyard party with the Cerwin Vegas. Their speakers used to be 6 ohm, wonder if they still are. They were a great speaker back then, when Gibson guitars owned them. I heard they got bought out by a Chinese Holding company? Need to do some homework.

I own aa pair of DM602S3 and CDM7NT that I would like to do a Look Inside video on. Since B&W has been bought and sold a few times over the years, it's my opinion the quality of the cabinets on the 600 line has suffered while prices continue to go up and up. A 3 way crossover requires 4 slopes. A low pass for the woofer, high pass for the mid, low pass for the mid, and high pass for the tweeter. That crossover has 4 inductors and 6 capacitors. This suggests that the 2 high pass filters might be 3rd order electrical, while the 2 low pass filters might be 2nd order electrical. If they produce good slopes that intersect in-phase then well done! 3-way crossovers for cheap are difficult!
I would have like to have seen the mid-range driver be a bit smaller and pass-band optimized (maybe an accordion surround, lower xmax coil/motor, lower moving mass driver). If they are crossing that over high, then the power response is going to be pretty uneven through the crossover range coming from a 6.5" woofer.
My rule of thumb for 3-ways, is either to use a very small mid-range driver, like a 3-4" and let it play up to 6-8khz so that everything but the "air" is coming from a point-source, and accept the narrowing power response to gain the point-source effect through the widest possible band, or use a pair of 3-4" drivers in MTM or larger 5-6" driver crossed over as low as the tweeter can handle. Looking for tweeters with Fs around 800hz and will cross them as low as 1200-1500hz

The frequency response is impressive, down to 25 HZ with 2 6.5 inch drivers? That's kinda hard to believe, but Cerwin Vegas always did have good bass response. It is a decent cabinet, but that "Polyfill, though "nice" actually doesn't do anything acoustically for the cabinet. You need Foam to be able to dampen the resonance. Or something called "No Res" - but it's kinda expensive. I've found Yoga mats, or foam mats for camping a cheap alternative. Most are made out of the same foam used in speakers. Just as doubling or tripling up on Mouse Pads is a good base for your bookshelf speakers. You gotta watch some of the products thanks to "Audiophiles" who will pay $100 for 2 foam speaker bases.

I didn't measure the speakers frequency response but IMO I believe 25Hz is a bit optimistic judging by the port tuning that I measured. I'm sure they can hit 25Hz, but its probably at -10dB from the amplitude tolerance of +-3dB in the response curve.
In my room they have decent bass for their size but I think this has more to do with the high Q drivers that Cerwin-Vega is using. High Q drivers are known to have a bass hump in their response before roll off. Honestly high q drivers are pretty typical at this price point. Just about all the manufacturers used them in their affordable lines.
Yes, you're correct. I should have been saying "poly fill" instead of damping. Anyways it was nice to at least see some poly fill in the cabinet because the Polk XT series doesn't use much if any when I did a tear down on their bookshelf model (XT20).

It's not a center channel so you need two of them so let's refer to this as a $700 SET of speakers.
