The Stroker was the stuff of legend when I was in High School. They are the OG.
In the eighties my neighbor had four KilpcheHorns. Dude 😎.
In the 90's I dreamed of having 2 15's and push them with a Hifonics Amp
Search mini Meade and there’s a car with 3 18 of these it’s a great video
Did someone say Stroker?
I've been obsessed with these subs since I was 14(I'm 44 now) I've never even heard one. I'd love to have a build like this. It's very nice.
Same here always wanted one
@@abramesparza1945 Did you see them for the first time in a Crutchfield magazine like I did? Lol I used to lust after the Stroker. They had a 32 pound motor which was unheard of back then. I did a hood about 10 years ago. Kind of wish I had used them when I had the chance. I'm out of the car audio game now. Probably forever.
I recently got me a Stroker pro classic 18” and I too dreamed of this sub in the 90’s. Proud to have it in my current system. Might I add, these subs sound accurate and get low and loud all in one.
@@Jt19702 That's awesome man. I'd love to hear it. What Amp do you have running it? Sealed or ported enclosure?
@@dextermorgan1I currently have it ran by a JP43 @ 2ohms. My plan is to run it on a quality class A/B amp to get the most SQ with the ability to get a little loud.
Your craftsmanship is to notch on this one! I can see improvements after each of your builds and this turned out amazing. Congrats on another solid video and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for always watching! This video editing is the hardest part. Big respect for the young kids that make pro looking videos! Hopefully I'll get there in time!
Wow, great work on the cabinet design. Wouldn’t have thought of making this an up-firing subwoofer but it looks great. Your finishing details are also fantastic. I love this design.
Great looking piece! I'd be willing to bet that someone at Cerwin Vega is paying attention 🧐
I had a 12" stroker back in the day, beat so hard the cars around mine rattled!! Good video!
do you have anything now?
Man that’s a really nice box. You did a lot of work on it. Excellent craftsmanship. Really impressed.
Sweet! Looking forward to this one!
Thank you Cerwin Vega! Man, I miss those VS-120’s. Time to get back into the CV game!
I currently have ine of these that i need to build a box for. Glad I came across your video. The vehicle i have has a huge trunk so i’m sure whatever box I go with should be fyne
It’s the reason why I love Cerwin vega
Dude this sub is a classic dream for sure I remember seeing one of these in the back of a cudda and my eye were just as wide then as I saw it now! Great build
Excellent job
really nice build
Remember the Strokers built into a VW Bug showcar in the late 80´s ..when they fired them up,I was about 2 meters from the car..all air dissapeared, like a vacuum ,so I had to walk back and catch my breath...I´ve never expected that to happen !
Great build! I love CerwinVega! I wish they would do some nice wide baffle home speakers with the high build quality that the stroker sub has. They are definitely capable of it. One free tip that you could have done, and might consider on all your builds is to round over the inside of the woofer hole on the baffle. This can help with letting the speaker play to its full potential and doesn’t cost anything. 👍🏻
Yes I hope they release some nice tower speakers in the coming years. They do have a pretty extensive line-up at the moment. They're just not very visible as a brand.
If you notice on the recess, the t-nuts actually hang out just a bit. I was afraid rounding over would expose too much of it, and be weaker. This is a HEAVY driver, so I played it safe. But yes, definitely a good idea in general.
Thanks for watching!!
Beautiful piece vega should be proud of this build
Fantastic cabinet work!
Nice Build 👍🏻
Nice box. Use battons on the joints.
Sweet! Nice workmanship as well. 👍
Bonjour de la France......... superbe travail, très belle fabrication artisanale, si j'habitais dans votre pays, je voudrais le même pour ma pièce "home-cinéma". Bonne journée
HOLLY COW! That is awesome and excellent box design! ❤
Awesome build👌
Great build! Looks fantastic!
Thanks!
Nice build!
Great subs hated them thought they were ugly till I got them. Now a huge fan lol.. I've had many 18's, 15's and 12's. Now just 4 of the OG 15's. Many modern subs still can't hold a candle to an old school stroker . The current version is great, but nothing like the originals. Whether in car, pro or used in home
As soon as I seen it …. Beautiful build, Subbed 👍
Try Rockwool insulation. I use truck underbody sounddeadening spray to further manage the sound inside my speaker. :)
Awesome. Congratulations from Portugal 🇵🇹
your level of safety is impressive.
We had a vega stroker 15 in a 1992 honda accord back in the day that sub riddled the entire car
nice sound. excellent video.
appreciate from brazil. low frequency ❤️
Excellent.
Beautiful box for a beautiful driver
Awesome work, and great vid!. Definitely very cool that they sent this to you!
HEY!!! A fellow user of the "thumb on the button" rattle can painting method.
Nice work on the cab.
Although...
I did flinch up a bit when you stepped back to hit the lacquer with one last little kiss from your sprayer
IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION of everything else that you had laid down. Lol.
I have done this many times laying different types of finishes and have only had it effect the sheen once or twice.
But when it does... I just feel sick about it, so it's become a reflex for me to flinch whenever I see two wet products overlapping perpendicular from each other.
Like a jump scare video. lol.
But I can be anal about things "just in case" but that one can for sure bite you on big flat surfaces like that.
You're doing a very fine job and you have reinspired me to consider doing something this weekend.
I have an older Peavy Backstage guitar amplifier that has working electronics, but the box is rough, and I have thought about
Building a new one from red oak with an ebony die and lime wax finish (Cerused finish) and make a solid copper face plate
along with 8 corner covers from the copper as well.
The speaker it those are nothing to look at, so I need to come up with some type of fabric to cover it with.
Something blk and copper colored
I will also change the knobs to something better (to match new design) than what is on it now.
I anyone thinks what would be a cool knob idea (vol / tone / drive, etc) let me know, I am thinking about something that size
that already exists that I could drill an apx. 1/2 in. deep, & apx. 3/16th dia. hole in the rear of it to mount it to the Attenuator
Black/ copper color related.
The only thing that I have thought of...
I was thinking about soldering a few 1 oz. Morgan copper dollars or something of a similar type design
(many different styles from $2 to $9 ea. .999 pure) to a hex shank rivet nut just because the nut would be an easy way to make it mount, but something cooler, would be way cooler.
Jump scare lol I get that. It did turn out fine, but I was going crazy with the lighting in my shop. With that sunlight coming in from one side, it made it look like my spray pattern was all over the place. I couldn't resist hitting it one more time lol even then it didn't looked right in the sun. When everything cured it looked great. Not the first time I've had sunlight play tricks on me!
And yes I think you should go for a weekend build project. If you finish it, let me know where I can gander some photos!
i had the original version(10") in my car way back, but this new version looks so much better.
by the way, cerwin vega is coming out with a new series of home speakers.
I think you should have done bolts instead of a cup cut out for the wire conneciton outside the box. years ago I would have not known the improvements that avoiding those would lead to. Tubes (mainly for home) or nice lugs to bolt to is what I see more of the pros use.
If you're wealthy, then you get to hear & feel the massive flex & 808 drop.... If your poor, then you get to choose your subwoofer at Wal-Mart, no flex, no drop, you can't get no satisfaction this way! 😂
I've got a Stroker 12D (dual 4 ohm) from around 1995 in a 2.7 ft3 L-port enclosure tuned to 45hz (C-V recommended) and while it's a pretty unique woofer, there's no way I'd have paid what it cost new. Found it on the side of the road on garbage day. It still works, but maybe after a recone I'll be impressed, dunno.
The 15" and 18" versions are WAYYY more effective.
Wow! Nice job how much is to make me a box!! 😎👍🏻
Nice work, like to see you document something like a Cornwall build???
That would be awesome. Hopefully I'll be able to put something like that together in a future build.
The Roulette
Great build. Now that is one of the new'er Strokers right? Wonder how it compares to OG ones from the 90s. Looks a lot a like. Always wanted to put on in the back of my 1987 Trans Am, but needs a huge box and its soooo much weight. lol.
I had a car subwoofer in my bedroom once with the speakers pointing up. Once day I walked in to find my cat curled up sleeping one of the 15" woofers. The dust cap was crushed, but I was able to pop it back out. Even without a cat, I wouldn't have an unprotected upward facing speaker because I know eventually something is going to get dropped on it.
My cat would destroy it lol he's too fat. These are far away from pets & children. But you're right, I could always drop something. I'm willing to risk it for the look though!
Prestige work here
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
👍
Makes sense now! I thought it was some type of coaxial driver when I first saw it so the thought of a one driver full range enclosure sounded. . different. Can’t wait to hear it. Looks great, as usual. Btw, how long are the pin nails you use?
I believe I was using 1-inch, and 2-inch for double panels when possible. I didn't nail everything, just when it was easy enough. I always prefer clamping when conditions are right.
I had 2 of these in my focus ZX3 in a ported box and OMG these speakers will kill your GF be careful and ENJOY
Wow you did a killer Job with boxs. Do you build boxes for other people or just for yourself? Im a big CV fan.
Unfortunately its too labor intensive in small runs to do at a decent price. Thanks for watching!
I also have a 15" Stroker and this is the exact type of enclosure I would like to build. Is there any way you would share/sell the exact dimensions of the box so I could build one?
Looks like you can plugin directly to it. Beautiful build. Good choice going with the semi gloss finish on the cherry veneer. What kind of phone is that?
That is a DAP. Ibasso DX something or other. It's their highest end model. I got a good deal on it used. I use it as my streamer, with SPDIF out into my dac. It intended to be used for headphone listening, and has very nice swappable amp boards.
Nice build! I love cerwin vega, and the strokers are high up on my list of things to build. Normally where I live I see the stroker built with tubes, like standard round vents. How do you get the measurements for the square vent you built? I see that you use winisd and square vent, it your is like a small horn with those angles etc.
Hi, square & round ports act as the same thing. There is a mass of air inside that can act to extend bass for some frequencies. If you're familiar with winisd, you can simply click on the square or round port icon to change between them. In general I use slot ports, because they are cheaper and usually easier to fit inside an enclosure.
@@DIYhyfy Thanks for your reply! I’m not familiar per se, but since last night I’ve modeled boxes and boxes. I figured out that square vent thing now. But, the vent you made in your stroker box, did you take in consider the displacement of the actual port?
Nice build! What are the internal dimensions of the box and the vent? I've got a BOXPLAN workbook that can predict where the out-of-band vent resonances will show up, and this are impacted by the internal dimensions of the box and the location of the vent and the driver in the box. The impedance curve shows a bit of loss around Fb BTW, but I suspect that's more due to the driver than the box, because the box looks pretty solid.
Hey, I'll have to check for enclosure dimensions when I get around my PC. If I recall, I believe first port resonance was pretty high, if that is what you're referring to. I believe it was at least 140 or so, but I'd have to look again.
Next time throw some power to that thing
Can you still purchase these drivers? I thought they were out of production?
Hey, yes you certainly can. Cerwin Vega has them live on their website. Check my community post if you want a coupon code.
Thanks .love it...super nice driver ...needs a big amp .??? Verry hugh amp.
Yes, car audio drivers are typically power hungry. However it will get loud on lower power.
Would love to have the dimensions on this enclosure
I hope to have a place to share build files soon.
Is that Duran Duran in the background?
No, but I do love them!
Where are you located? Do you build for customers?
Hey, hopefully one day I will have the time to build for clients. Unfortunately I'm extremely busy these days.
For home audio u want to be able to play 15 htz and up
No, this build is specifically for 2-channel listening. There is no need for 15hz with music listening. You can't hear below 20hz. For cinema, yes you want the low rumble. For music, I want a nice flat response into the thirties. That is exactly what I did here. I have an 18" Ultimax for hip-hop & electronic music.
@@DIYhyfy oh I thought u was using this for bass as ur home theater not music only.
What's the cost for a box for 2 of these subwoofers?
You could build a box for 2 of these for a couple hundred dollars or less, depending on your goals. I would avoid prefab unless you aren't able to build where you are.
@@DIYhyfy I live in Oregon. I can't or have no experience building boxes
Put a washer on the train nut bolt not to damage the baffle
That's definitely a good tip. I did use a washer on the first couple, but it was a bit too big, and was hard to get out afterwards.
Mmmmmmm
I just bout 2 stroker 15s on Craigslist for $100 don't be jealous
That's a good deal
New Cerwins are hit and miss. China built crap. Costumer support? None. One year later and still waiting for my replacements. I love the old company. I'm packing them up and sending them to the main office. Going to leave a bad note for them. There's forty eight of us that are going to do this. It's a shame.
Hopefully they'll get the point. Be like Yamaha. They sent me brand new set of three ways and told me to keep the broken ones. They even sent me the replacement parts. Only had to pay for shipping and handling.
Great video. I dropped a sub and like. Keep up the good work, bro.
Hey, sorry to hear about your dealings with them. That's too bad, hopefully they'll resolve things for you. Thanks for the positivity despite your experience. Appreciate the sub!
@@DIYhyfy Yeah man. The past few years I've been getting into DIY HiFi. Mainly speakers and crossovers. Being a Electrician and Electrical Engineer it's like a hobby. Just built my third pair of open baffle speakers. It's funny AF I build these different speakers and people come over for parties or just to hangout. And my DYI speakers end up leaving with them. Sell them. Not for profit but to help be able to buy some more. A buddy bought a pair of four way two piece each speaker. A three way on top of a subwoofer. And he gave me his Focal Kanta 3s.
As for Cerwin Vega, I don't hate them, just what is happening to me with them.
i know sometimes there customer support can be funny but they were very helpful with me when I called just to ask questions about the new strokers i have the OG 18' and OG 12" D4 voice coil models. the biggest issue when rebuilding them is getting the 8" top spider not the lil 6" one most rebuild kits are offering. Theres only a handful of the 8" spiders left to restore the 18" models back in a like OG state and one of the guys that rebuilt my one has 3 of them the others are on ebay from a guy who rebuilds all JL stuff in the groups. I let rebuild and restore rebuild my one and it took him almost 6 months then when i put it in the enclosure i built for it to test it i realized the surrounds were covering the screw holes on the basket and that the speaker gasket also covered the holes and werent properly lined up for what I paid $500 and the long wait because he flew a guy in to help him rebuild it and that did work that sloppy during the final stages of the recone i will do it myself or actually take it to Andras Radvanyi to do. I suggest buying some OG strokers if you can its cheaper to rebuild them yourself. Thats what i will do if i blow these. But to be honest it doesnt seem as if the newer versions have and real advancements like the claim other than vents at the bottom of the motor and possibly a slightly bigger 4" voice coil but by only making them Single Voice Coil was why i didnt see a reason to purchase them. Did u get them reconed yet?..
1:40 why would you have a 15'' subwoofer that doesn't have even response curve, and more importantly no bass.... one of the most annoying things i notice with speakers is the absolute terrible low frequency response when listening to electronic or rap music the frequency for bass that's hard to reproduce EVENLY is around 20hz to 60hz and then you want the hard to reproduce punchy bass not from the subwoofer but from a woofer that's around 100 to 200 hz and then a Tweeter for 1k up
Im with you, nothing against the posters build but these subs were some of the worst in the game. When people call them legends I laugh
"Furniture grade sound quality" ??
I love listening to my furniture. My couch has a wide soundstage. But my recliner can be a bit harsh on the top end.
I'd set it on its side not up
For what purpose?
Moist
Too bad its just the cheaper Chinese made 8/10 tenths as good as the only original STROKER. 15"/18"
Admittedly the new version is 30% the cost.
Aburridoooo
I'll try harder next time
What a waste of time I couldn't hear the thing
It would sound like my room rattling.
That's not the "legendary" stroker. That's the new stroker. Its a chinese made copy that the company that owns the cerwin vega name today put out. The og legendary stroker has an adjustable slide in the center, that one isn't adjustable.
