You could also just bought a pair of JTR Noesis 215 :) Twenty years ago I build a 130 liter closed system, it was so heavy (about 100 kilo's) I could hardly lift it from the ground (from laying on its back to standing up). The baffle was 60 mm MDF.
@@DIYhyfy Thanks, it was based on a 12" Lambda Acoustics SB12 (old brand fom Nick McKinney (rip), who later started working at AE speakers, but passed away much to early). Thanks these were really fun to work on. The bigger size made it easier to work on all the details. I fit inside these, where I can't fit my hand inside some of these others lol
I did consider doing a 2 tone like you described. Would have saved some money on veneer. I really wanted the drivers to contrast with the light wood. Thanks for watching!
First off thanks to you and toids for the inspiration as im now happily following along with my own veneer build 😊. Just something i noticed. Your R2 resistor termination didn't look to match the plans I got. Could be worth a check. 7:29
Nice work on the cabinets and being a cabinet builder I'm sure you can't beat the cherry with any paint unless it's going in a kids room, beautiful choice for finish I just wish you would have let us hear what they sound like, I've been looking for something beyond my KLH A5 but they're just hard to beat
It looks like you did a fantastic job with the veneer. However, I would have opted to spray them with paint. Personally, I would like the look better and, in the future, if you wanted to change the color it would be easy enough to respray. Veneer on a rectangle enclosure that big looks vintage and some may prefer that. Good job and thanks for the video.
build the box around the braces and top and bottom. dont build the box then slide the braces in and force the glue off the panels. there is a proper procedure to follow and it's really quite simple if you sit back and think about it. oh yeah, clamp the track to the wood when using a track saw then it won't move while cutting.
Excellent build! After having these for (7 months at time of this comment) do you still think these are endgame speakers? I am seriously thinking about building these because I love the dynamics and efficiency of pro speakers. Assuming they are 4 ohm impedance which would be great. How is the bass? Have you had a chance to measure these yet? Thanks!
Hi, yes I've measured them. They are pretty darn flat. End Game? Maybe. Toid is doing a redesign as we speak, using a better compression driver. While these are great, I would personally hold off until he publishes the new design (soon). I love these, and use them everyday. For movies, and some music, you will want a subwoofer. Pro drivers like this won't dig down terribly low.
To be honest, I will mostly be using them for music. I'm not a huge movie watcher. They are great for music. Maybe, maybe not as much detail as ribbons, but they do so many other things well. It's tough to describe, but ultimately they're awesome. HUGE sound.
NGL, my heart skipped a beat when you were pushing up the first speaker. Totally thought it was going to tip over. Great build. I think I’ve decided on building three of these for my home theater to be built in a few years. Are you still happy with the speakers?
Hey, good thing they're well balanced!! Yes, I would still recommend building these. They're great for movies & music. I still use mine on a daily basis. I don't feel any need for improvement whatsoever. I would point out that Toid is designing a new model of these. Check out @toidsdiyaudio for the video when it comes out.
Very cool, they looked good in black, and you've shown that wood suits these very well. I can only imagine how big they sound. What laquer are you using in your sprayer?
Nice build... A little constructive critique.. you shouldn't use water based sealers or paints on MDF ever... It causes the MDF to swell. You will get much better results using shellac. it also dries completely in minutes allowing for multiple coats to be applied very quickly. it seals the MDF and hardens the surface. Two coats of shellac with a light sanding in between..
Thanks, you're not wrong. I had that on hand, but almost immediately regretted using it. I would much prefer veneer directly on to mdf. However my original plan was to paint these. Never the less I'll be using shellac instead next go around. Thanks for watching!
I’m putting plans together to build these too. I’m hoping @Toid will show his center channel plans. What are your thoughts on going with Baltic Burch ply instead of 3/4” mdf?
Great video. Speakers look great. I too would have veneered, good call. I’m confused by the “port”. There is no “tube” or “chimney” behind the rectangular opening? How is that a tuning port and not just a hole in the baffle?
Hi, thanks for watching! So for the port question, yes it is a port on this case. Because it is tuned rather high, it so happens that the width of the baffle is the length of the port. In most cases where you see a "hole in a box" it is indeed a mistake by someone without an understanding of what a port is/does.
I like raptor liner so i would have used that. Cool build, i want to build my own speakers as well. Where do you get crossover build and all other build info along w what speakers etc.
There's a link in description for all the plans. The plans will give you a list of all parts used, dimensions, etc. This designer has a ton of good affordable builds.
Great video, and beautiful job on the speakers!! What made you go with these over the BTS15? Just curious as I'm going to be building some of toids speakers but strictly for home theater use. I haven't been able to listen to either model so i love hearing opinions of why people go with one over the other. Keep to the great videos!!
The BTS15 are likely a great, if not better option. I have not heard them to compare however. I built these mostly for appearance reasons. I wanted a large horn speaker. The BTS may perform even better than these. He really likes the CD in the BTS. With that said, these sound great, so any improvement would mean an amazing sounding speaker.
Veneer is really pretty simple. Yes it is intimidating, given the price of material. With that said, take your time. If you are nervous, try using the cold press method. Simply use wood glue spead evenly on both surface & clamp. Then take a blade, and cut leaving about 16th-32nd inch, and sand that off by hand. If you have any questions I didn't answer, just let me know.
They look awesome!!! I’m surprised you didn’t have to use a 2” compression driver to cross over lower due to woofers being 12”. I would have liked to know more about the drivers and crossover details personally.
I may make a follow up on the design in the future. It gets tough deciding which details to include when the video runtime gets long. In the meantime, check out Toidsdiys channel for more details on the design.
Yes go for it! I am running them with no center channel, as I'm running them on a 2.1 amp. If I were to run one, I would build this, oriented on its side, and split the vents. The horn is equal 90° coverage, so it would work out great.
@@DIYhyfyThanks for the response! By splitting the vents, you’re thinking a double port on left and right vs the single bottom in the original vertical build?
So, you like them for 2 channel music you said. That's what I'm after. Do they work for rock, pop, country? I want some good pounding speakers with clarity.
They are great for music. I would not however choose to build then over other options for music only. My latest coaxial build have better imaging and clarity. The Swans 3.1 are also great for music. The 212s are very dynamic, but don't image as well as smaller speakers.
Those look amazing. What would you charge for a completed pair of these, over materials/drivers, etc? It'd be really cool if someone sold finished versions of Toid's speakers, in the most basic finish.
Man production work like that would be really challenging. It would need to be a partnership between the designer & builder. Most plans prohibit commercial use. But, I agree, it would be great for buyers to have the option.
Wow! Those are monsters! What are their feeding requirements to get the best sound? I myself would've went with a natural finish on that cherry veneer. It would've had a nice contrast to the black. That's just my two cents. I wonder how the automotive finish would've looked? Thank you for the detailed steps you provided during the video. I chose to subscribe because of it.
In terms of sound quality, the Swans win that category. The 212s have a great sound, but the Swans are better for most music. With new xover mods, they really shine. For movies, and large rooms the 212s are more consistent. Off axis is more neutral.
They do great for hifi. Very neutral, with a warm top end. The dual woofers pack a huge punch in the mid and lower bass region. This gives drums and things huge scale, which is really unique. It's hard to compete with the effortless way these get loud. If you're looking for a super detailed "analytical" sound, a traditional hifi speaker build would be a better idea. These don't image as well as something like a dome, or ribbon tweeter usually does.
I can't remember now, but I often buy from Parts-Express when it's on sale, or Home Depot website. There are lots of places to buy from online. Lots of specialty shops too if you want something unique or specific.
Are there any video's of a mid size speaker build that has everything? So I don't have to have seperate sub woofers just two speakers with subwoofers built in?
Really nice job! :) But in the last minutes of the video (it's really hard to see) it looks like one of the H250 horns is turned with the 60deg direction mounted sideways. The H250's are 60x90 horns, and for almost all applications except really complex beamsteering in systems 10-20x larger than this, you really want the 90deg spread sideways and the 60deg spread vertically... This does of course depend on exactly what you're trying to achieve with room interaction and so on, and I also might be totally wrong about what I see :) !!
It seems linking directly to a manufacturer gets the reply deleted, but I linked the actual product page on the official SBA website. Never trust 3d party retailers to get it right. AFAIK SBA has never had a different version of this horn either @@DIYhyfy
The SBA site specifically says 90x60, on the product page AND in the product pdf. The product page also includes polars for x and y, which show quite a lot of difference in radiation pattern. So I have no idea where you're looking if you see 90x90...? @@DIYhyfy
what model wagner gun do you use and what sort of clear do you find goes well through it? I only have automotive guns for 2k clear I use on airbrush art and I'm unsure about airless sprayers like the wagner.
My sprayer for lacquer is a cheap Chinese knockoff. I can't remember the name. To be honest, I'd highly recommend saving for a compressor. I currently am myself. I've used the sprayer on a ton of projects with good results, but it's always a hassle. Parts are cheap, and you have to be careful when cleaning and assembling & what not. I've heard all of the guns from Husky & such are quite good. So don't be afraid to be cheap.
Great build. Nice hairdryer. :-)) You should take a peak at the crossover, only hot glue ain’t sufficient over time. Maybe upgrade the parts at the same time. Keep up the great work and tutorial.
I just built the other speakers I saw u build. But now I wanna build these. They are from toids audio I believe correct? Anyway do u have to pay for the plans?
Just curious... did you have (or have access to) any speakers that were "good" or at least in the same category as that $14K speaker? If you have any way to do so, how would you compare these to say the JBL L100 or the Klipsch Heresy IV? I'm just trying to get a common frame of reference so I will have a better idea or whether or not I want to try to tackle this build. Thank you!
Hi, unfortunately I've not been able to do direct comparisons like that. I did hear several pairs of Klipsch Heritage models around the time I was building these (by coincidence). These sounded as good as any of the Klipsch. Can't say much about the L100s. Limited experience with them.
Hey diyhyfy. Nice to meet you. Herd about you from toids channel, so everyone makes these jtr style speakers. Yes they will work great in a large room but i am thinking as a beginner speaker building what about a 7 inch or 8 inch version with a horn? I just recently had to cell my klipsch rf5’s and i had the beloved klipsch rc7 which i want to make myself which has a 1.75 compression driver and 4:57 duel 7” subs and its a 2.5 way crossover. I know i can make them better but i am having trouble choosing drivers and still learning. I was wondering what you or toids might recommend for drivers and how to match a 7” or 8” driver with a high output compression driver that says its about 105 spl 1 watt 1 meter. Thanks if you see this question and would love to see you guys build the klipsch rc7 and make it both a center then match vertical. I have a 15 x 12 room and the klipsch rp 160’s are just not doing the output like my rf’s and rc7 was.
Hi, it's tough to give you ideas for driver selection. My advice would be to look for a kit that suits your needs. There are a TON to choose from. Or if you decide to build your own, you'll need to read about driver selection, impedance, xover design, horn types. Really depends how much work you have time for. Thanks for watching!
I've been trying to get Toids DYI Audio plans but the only place I found was a $15 dollar a month member ship on Patrion. Is that the only option anymore. I want to build his Cinema 6. I have trouble hearing and he said his dad found these speakers easy to hear dialoge.
@sicilianbambino Hmm...."Someone" is Schurter -- "Center channel will be horizontal ( under my screen ) inspired buy the Audience 212 build By Toids." Just google: JTR 212HT Clone Build (starting page 2) of avsforum. 😉
Hi :). 11 months on how are you finding these? I am seeking speakers for dedicated cinema that provide superb clarity of the most subtle sounds, as well as a real sense of kick or feel where it should be - kick drums, a bass etc. I currently have Perleston R5m which have a superb wide and deep, almost holographic soundstage. How do you find these speakers in that regard? I mainly build subs - so this would be new ground for me :). Last point - MDF is deadly for your lungs. Please please wear a mask, safety glasses and ear protection. You can't get your health back.
I know, I almost always wear a mask, but got lazy in this video. Setting a bad example for people, sorry! Toids DIY Audio says he prefers the clarity of his newer BTS15s. These have all of the things you are looking for, but not the most holographic image. They do image very good & wide, but not the most focused. I would imagine with the better compression driver in the BTS15s that they image a bit more precisely. It's hard to beat the scale of these. Extremely dynamic, and very easy to drive. I use them as my mains still to this day. But I do sometimes break out one of my many other speakers for that magical soundstage & image.
Thank you for the high praise. I’m so happy that you’re enjoying them.
I'm actually disappointed I didn't rave more now. After setting up room treatment better, I'm even more blown away.
it ironic a youtuber is make a video about another youtubers product. . pretty cool full circle@@DIYhyfy

Yea it'd be hard to make these look bad. I do want to ultimately do some automotive paint on something soon.
Really nice job! :)
But in the last minutes of the video (it's really hard to see) it looks like one of the H250 horns is turned with the 60deg direction mounted sideways.
Hey, looking on SB Audience's site it shows the 250 to be 90°x90°
I may be missing something, but it shows coverage equally on both axis.
@@DIYhyfy
Great build and awesome job, the speakers look awesome. What is the estimated cost of these?
I didn't keep a running list, but I would estimate just under $2K. Much less without veneer.
nice build! What frequency are the ports tuned to?
Dats v3 says 40hz
what model wagner gun do you use and what sort of clear do you find goes well through it?
Great video!! But tell me, are your thumbs during the glue-up ok?? 😳
how many watts can each handle? 8 ohms correct?
Where they max out, I would need to do some math. I'm definitely not sending them more than 50 watts or so on average.
The only appropriate use for a cotton mask, dust.
I use a respirator these days
I just built the other speakers I saw u build. But now I wanna build these. They are from toids audio I believe correct? Anyway do u have to pay for the plans?
Yes, they are for purchase. I believe they are $10-20 usd. We'll worth the money in my opinion. What did you build before?
Very happy with my jamo d590
I like pool, and speakers.
@@DIYhyfy Thank you!
It’s awood working, where is the project?👌🧐
4:11 you have cut right through both boards but on the next shot you have cut a rebate for the driver?
@@DIYhyfy understood on info above! I”ll start reading and kits. Thanks.
Question, How much did those things weigh??? I mean seeing that you needed a dolly to move them. What are the dimensions because they look super tall?
It's tough to say exactly. They're 58" tall if I remember correctly. You have to bear hug them to move around. They're probably around 150lbs or so
@@DIYhyfy 😳 YIKES!!! Those won't be getting moved around much. Lol
But cool thanks for the response.
Woooooooww😍😍😍😍😍😍
Where did you buy the acoustic treatment foam?
It's a Walmart mattress topper. You can find them in varying thickness & they're cheap!
Tuyệt vời
I've been trying to get Toids DYI Audio plans but the only place I found was a $15 dollar a month member ship on Patrion. Is that the only option anymore. I want to build his Cinema 6. I have trouble hearing and he said his dad found these speakers easy to hear dialoge.
The link to purchase individual plans is in the description. However Patreon gives you access to all plans, in the highest tier I believe.
They look very similar to HSU’s I’ve owned for over a decade.
Nice 👍👍👍👍👍
I have made a lot of speakers. Just focus on clamping. No need to do all those Brad nails. Just saving you some time
When can i stop by to listen to them
Build them lol you'll be able to listen every day!
Cool
What rms power amplifier could these be matched with?
Hi, they are very efficient. I'm currently running them as mains with a desktop Fosi amplifier.
UGGH ALL THAT LOVELY SPEAKER AND such a budget crossover
I'm accepting component donations! JK, thanks for watching!
What would the layout have been to use as a center channel?
You could lay on their side, and split the port to either side. This would work well as a center channel. Someone online has done this with success.
@sicilianbambino Hmm...."Someone" is Schurter -- "Center channel will be horizontal ( under my screen ) inspired buy the Audience 212 build By Toids." Just google: JTR 212HT Clone Build (starting page 2) of avsforum. 😉
I love veneer but I'm not a fan of Oak. Oak reminds me of every old house I've ever been in and those memories come with a smell.
stay out of old peoples homes
Can i ask where you got that veneer?
Yes I ordered from Parts Express. I would have normally looked for a better option, but I was in a hurry.
Can you tell me the measurement of box sir😅😊
The plans are available from Toids DIY Audio :)
