Taking A $150 Speaker Kit To The Next Level- Let's Build The C-Note Speaker Kit!
No love for DIYSG?
Колонки шикарные, был бы свой дом, примерно так же бы собрал себе
Anything out there for a small listening room?
Really? Thats Bad Work.
Analyzing your measurements, it looks as if your crossover points are wondering with the voice coil excursion. I would take an inductance reading of the voice coils and design impedance equalization circuits for the woofer and mid-range. That is likely what is causing your 80Hz bump and 300Hz dip. If you don't have an inductance meter, GET ONE! it is imperative for crossover design!
great job brothah like a professional
How did you wire the woofer? Mine doesn’t seem to be working
Superb build. All I remeber from the 90s on these subs are they are legendary. Back then I was only a kid and these were very expensive. To note : these can be purchased now on the down 4 sound website . Thanks for posting .
Thanks for this overview. Just want to shout out Troels Graverson’s designs. Very high end though you need to buy the crossover parts and possibly the drivers to get the crossover plans but truly high end sound. Also CSS has some well respected kits. I have the Hivi 3.1 with the Sehlin xover mod. Glad to see another happy owner.
Why is the veneer orientation different?.
End of hearing as you once knew it! As a retired carpenter/ contractor I hate working with MDF. The smell of it repulses me.
Use a respirator when painting, that particle mask does absolutely nothing for you
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
The GR-Research X-LS Bravo is or would be my first choice, but budget reality has set in and the likely build will be the Parts Express C-Note MT Book Shelf. As having heard both the sound from either IMO are very close if not near identical. The C-Note is slightly smaller and funny meets one of Danny's mandatory principles and that is the closer to and the most line line your drivers the better the sound and few if any arrival time issues. This also If I understand it as well requires a less complex and maybe expensive crossover. I don't, or won't, unless they offer an upgrade mod will be changing anything concerning the design. Though given my love of AMT Tweeters and their longer refined decay times and sparkle makes me want to swap out the Silk Dome tweeter for an AMT... As a close Mfg Built small bookshelf that hearing was insane were the Matrin Logan B2 I think that was the model. The ML's are roughly $600 a pair, but just I knew I'd found the sound I hope to replicate along with their Sound Stage and Holographic sound.
Folks who are considering getting started in this addicting hobby w/ a minimum investment should stay w/ Parts Express, specificly the dimimutive Passive Agressives and the Aviatrix pair (Aviatrices?). The Passive Agressives-While each is only slightly bigger than a box of tissues, the sound that comes out is amazing. With no rear port, they can be placed up against a wall and they have the highest Sig-Other approval rating. Downside-As mighty as they are, physics take over and there is a limit as to how much space they can fill. $170 (pr.). The Aviatrix MTM (pair) was recently re-designed by master designer Curt Campbell to use the updated RST 28 tweeter that replaced the ledgendary original RS 28 and he managed to keep the magic inside the boxs. At $300 these are P.E.'s most complete kit and all the little stuff that one usually has to buy comes included. They work great layed flat to use a center channel. But since they only come is pairs, two pairs would have to be purchased, but they extra parts could be used to build 2 smaller MT versions as surrounds for a killer home theater set. The boxs and plans are avail. and total outlay would be less than a $1000 (depending on the finishes). The HI-vi Swans, listed on Amazon, both the 2-way and 3-way kits were outstanding values, but have not been avail. for some time so I'm not sure why they brought up in this video.
Wonderfull work! Love the box and colour! Just bought an old 12" stroker. Will do the same as you! Nice work!
Note: If you want to lower or eliminate Bass Standing wave etc you should disassemble them and radius the inside speaker thru holes the sharp edges tend to cause diffraction issues. Also eliminate push on wire connectors, do not use PVC jacketed speaker wire polyethylene is better, get ride of Sand Cast resistors for better resistors usually $8.00 and up per and upgrade your Caps spendy $50 per and up. but the radius of thru holes is a must.
Stroker! 8==✊️=D~
Thank you for the effort putting this video together.
The PS is too small, the modules cannot develop their full power. This is a waste of very good modules by current starvation.
Spends a grand on an amplifier kit. Tightens the nuts on the inside of the speaker binding posts with a pair of pliers. 🤦🏻♂️
Can I borrow your socket set please 🙏
Great video, thank you for demonstrating the simplicity and internals. I’d love to see a video on the crossover mod, as that would be the turning point for me trying these out 🙏🏼👍🏼
I just might do a video on the xover mod in the future. May even try my hand at a design myself. Stay tuned!
@@DIYhyfy sweet! 👍🏼
Thanks for the review! Much appreciated!
Impractical design
awesome build. i remember having a pair of these in my impala back in high school in the late 90's
I did their preamp kit and it’s been kind of a disappointment. The remote isn’t as universal as they market, and there’s some weird noise issues when changing volume.
Sorry to hear that. Hopefully they can resolve your issues.
Solve the problem instead off…..
@@irktwcI sent it back, they replaced the control board with a newer version, and I have it back. The noise issue is about 50% of what it was (loud popping on volume changes tied directly to the knob clicks) but is still present. The remote issue is that they market it as universal-compatible with a known protocol (Phillips RC-5). My universal remote reads the program just fine but the preamp does not respond to the universal. It also will not respond to a normal repeater. I wanted to control my stereo with one remote and have it stay in a closed cabinet. The preamp does not do that. Is it great when actually listening to music? Yes, it’s 100% transparent. Is it great from a practical standpoint? Not so much. It was $1,300 and I would not do it again if given the opportunity.
@@Metalwolf765 have you tried grounding your source chassis to the presmp chassis? Or the amp(s) chassis to the presmp chassis? You can just test by touching a wire to each, as long as you connect to bare, non-anodized metal. One or the other such links tend to solve most ground loops that are noticeable. For a longer term solution just back out a screw on each, wrap the wire around it, re-tighten until it’s strong. Lemme nough….😃
@@samuellord8576 I don’t think it’s a ground loop, I use XLRs. Besides, it happens on both inputs. One of those is a turntable with separate ground. If anything was going to cause an issue it’d be that. The problem, I think, has more to do with the volume knob/control board. I think my amplifiers pick up the on/off between the clicks of the knob as DC offset. They did not publish how the volume is controlled, and I think it may be relay-based stepped attenuation. The relays or switching seem to be causing dc offset pops as they come in and out.
What's the cost?
I looked up the price for what is essentially an ikea-esque amplifier and the pricing model is absurd. The total cost of components is probably $100 to $200.
Are you referring to their manufacturer parts cost? Where can you find any of these parts close to that cost?
@@DIYhyfygo to any parts supplier website. Circuit board, capacitors and transistors, resistors and wire. Seriously.
I may be an idiot in this realm as I have spent 30 years in the Car Audio industry. Class D amplifiers have been a standard for years and I have incorporated them with proper power supplies running an array of drivers. The class D amplifiers I have used for my application make this look inferior, as well as low ohm load capabilities and power output. I am, of course, only using these for subwoofer drivers. Anyway, cool and thanks for the info.
Great job! I easy enjoyed the video! I can’t wait to see what you do next!
While cool, it seems more expensive than Buckeye Amps, but he's in America. It's good to have options though. I like their DIY PreDIGin add-on option.
Buckeye make really good amps, from what I hear.
Darn Straight Forward!!!! ⏩⏩ I like it
this case can be easy twice smaller why is so big brick
Hi, to ensure it is the same size as our Pre-Amp.
Looks nice. More of a "assembly required" than a DIY, but neat either way.
Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Your specs are pseudoscience
Pseudoscience? Guess I should review Bigfoot next? Ghosts? Let me know what you'd like to see!
What's the digital signal has been passed through a deck and then into a class d it's just going into a garbage can
Class d objectively measure well and almost all modern music is being mixed and mastered with class d amps
ignorance on full display
Play some class d in the same sentence with high end amplifiers is an oxymoron
LOL no that's probably just you bud
Glad I stumbled on this build as it confirms an issue that I discovered with the speaker. That dip in the lower mids is in fact there. I measured mine outside elevated quite high up and got the same dip which isn't present in Paul's sim. Unfortunately this likely means that Paul's data he utilized for filter design was not very accurate. It can be quite tricky to get accurate information for the woofer to mid filtering. Paul states he did much of the voicing in home so I assume this dip was to counter act the speakers loading in his room. I felt this dip in the response bothered me quite a bit and left me with a speaker that felt too bright and lacked body. I ended up removing the passive crossover and running the speakers active to get around this issue and overall achieve much better driver integration.
Why does everyone use butt joints as opposed to adding a rabbit or groove.
Can you dyi a jtr rs1?
Sure it would be possible to DIY a comparable subwoofer. They use built-in amplification, which can get very expensive with the power demands of an 18"
You can ues external just would love to see what you come up with@DIYhyfy
You can do it with a external amp @DIYhyfy
The tritrix was my first DIY build 😝
Awesome!!! Reminds kef ls50 meta. Amazing work and craftsmanship itching to finish some other around the house work and repeat it. Will it affect anything if I make the front port? I want them jn my table and the space is an issue. Do you think of making some shallow and wide speaker like kef q4 meta??? I
Two Against Nature!
They got the stuff!
great video
Hey man, instead of all that primer/sealer, use a mixture of wood glue and water as your mdf sealer. It will help have a better base for your paint.
Nice thanks for the info . So far I really enjoy my ADS L780 but being a woodworker I really want to build a nice set of speakers... I never actually listen to "high end speakers" Im curious where my ADS would be compared to your list ? I also wonder if I like them because they are closed enclosure ....?
Building a modern designed speaker would likely be a big improvement. But sound truly is quite subjective. Price in speakers is largely tied to level of exterior finish. Elacs B2s are really affordable because the finish is cheap. But they both measure, and sound phenomenal. I actually have a video where I upgrade them with veneer. If you're just looking to try a build, Paul Carmodys designs are all free on his website. Pick something you really like the look of, that's in your price range. Cheers!
this is the content we need, awesome projects on the cheap. speaking of I'm tired of companies charging so much for high power amps! hopefully this will be a thing in the past within the next few years.
I hope you're right!
Cough cough SVS. lol
