Step-By-Step Guide to Learning CW Morse Code | Specific steps, tips, and our journey!
This is our personal recommendation for anyone getting started learning morse code (CW). This is based on our own personal experience and preferences. There are many courses and tools for learning morse code. We are sharing what made a difference for us and why!
If you are successfully learning with different methods and tools, that's awesome and please let us know in the comments! We're for sure not trying to say there is only one way. Mike, in particular, almost gave up after learning the wrong way, and baked into this is what ended up turning things around for him, and the way Becky learned from scratch -- much faster than Mike.
Below are some great tools, websites and clubs to help you...

CW POTA in "The Snow" | Winter Straight Key Ham Radio Activation | CW Copy Practice

In Alabama when it snows, the whole town shuts down. After the roads cleared and the sun came out, we just had to get outside and on the air. Although cold, it was a beautiful day and reminded us just how much fun it was to go for a little hike, set up our station and see who was listening. Sending on a straight key with cold hands turned into a bit of a challenge but we had a great time as alw...

    I initially wanted to get a technician license just so I could use APRS to track my model rockets. After I passed the test the proctor asked me if I wanted to take to General exam while I was there. I took it and failed by one question. Challenge accepted. I went home and started to study for the General exam. After about a week I felt like I was ready but the next test session wasn’t for three more weeks. So I started studying for the Extra exam and, since it was a requirement, Morse code as well. When the time for the exam came around it took and passed all three exams. My one piece of advice is to never ever look at any visual representations of Morse code. Morse code is for your ears only. Oh, and I’ve never launched a rocket since.

    Watched this video a few times. Tnx very much for the nice tips. I already practice with morsemania for over a year. I also use LCWO which you didn't mention in this video. But like you told there are many and different ways to learn CW. I exchanged e-mail with Teri KO4WFP about ICR in which she pointed me in the right direction. I love you very positive POTA CW videos. Those were my inspiration to get on the air and at least try working some POTA stations on CW. Hope to meet both of you on air some day. 73, Bas PE4BAS

      @HamRadioDuo 3 часа назад

      Thank you! Call signs are definitely the most difficult thing to get. We still don't get most of them the first time and that's okay! As a hunter you really just need to be able to recognize you're on the right frequency (hearing it's a POTA and their call) but you can listen to several rounds to make sure. Then sending your call sign and recognizing when they call you back. (Most activators will also slow down to your incoming call speed to help out). Then ... TU UR 5NN (state) and you're on the air!! Excited for you and don't worry if you mess it all up ... we've all been there! Just have fun and celebrate the effort whether it's perfect or a lot of mistakes. Then just do it again .......and again and again. You'll relax and get better each time! Good luck and excited to hear how it goes! 73 Becky es Mike

    Just to say that when I first saw THIS video re-explaining what the Pota Babe and Glen explained several times in their videos concerning the crucial key use of ICR, plus your recommendation of the app Morse Mania, I downloaded it, saw it WAS relevant, bought the full version, set it to 30 wpm with spacing, like you said, and in 3 days my ability to copy at 30 wpm has doubled. I got all the alphabet, numbers and now I start punctuation.... I AM OVER THE MOON with joy at this massive improvement. Yesterday evening we had our local radio club UHF QSO and I shared this breakthrough with them. They were astonished that as a beginner, I was learning to copy at 30 wpm. They are all OM's and, back in the day, "had" to learn CW to get their ticket. How did they learn? 5 wpm....7 wpm, 10 wpm, etc, etc. And they all "drowned". Only one does CW. ONLY ONE. Instant Character Recognition IS the key to Morse Copy was what held me from GOTA. Thanks to you two, and Glen/Pota Babe I feel ready for take off I'll keep you posted 😊

Taking the leap to fast character speed definitely seems counterintuitive but it really is necessary. And for some, even fast than that to really break the habit. So many hams, including Mike, learned at slow speeds and it really is hard to copy when you need that extra decode time. We will pass on the thank you to Glen and Teri as I'm sure they would be excited to hear your story as well. Excited to hear your updates! 73 Becky es Mike

    I am throughly impressed with your CW QRP POTA activities, Michael and Becky. As an old 20 WPM Extra, I experienced the challenge of learning code in stages. First at 5, then 13 and finally 20 WPM. There were years between each stage of mastery. It didn’t come easily for me. By the time I passed the FCC 20 WPM code exam, I had learned that I could no longer think about the sounds I was hearing and translate them into characters. Instead, I had train my brain to AUTOMATICALLY respond in writing to the characters being sent. That technique resulted in me helping several hundred hams pass their code exams at both the Novice and General speeds. The key was for me to supply learners with tape recording of characters sent repeatedly while they wrote character on paper building from simply words to more complex ones as new characters were learned. It was an effective method. I love working QRP from the field, especially SSB at power levels as low as 500 milliwatts. Thank you for the enthusiasm and joy you share on your channel and on-the-air! Thank you! Wow, that was a lot of work to basically learn 3 different times. Sounds like eventually you got to instant character recognition as you were able to just write it down without really thinking about it! Awesome on the QRP stuff. What's the advantage of taking morse with 35 wpm? I tried it but it's hard.

    • @HamRadioDuo
      @HamRadioDuo 2 дня назад

      Great question! While it seems counter intuitive, for may people -- like us -- its the only way to prevent your brain from memorizing the dits and dahs. It's too fast to listen and count the dits and dahs so you learn to hear the sound of the whole character. If you hear the sound of the whole character, then it can pop into your head instantly. If 35 wpm is too hard, try 25 or 27 to see if that is fast enough to not hear dits and dahs but still hear the sound. It's kind of like learning a language. When you hear someone speak the letter "W". You just hear a W. You don't hear "double yew". The part of your brain that does the instant recognition is super fast. That's the part of the brain you are trying to use, not the part that has to think about the map of letters and the dits and dahs for each one. Once you use the fast part of your brain, the letters just pop right in. When you listen to words, that gives you plenty of time between letters to think about what word you might be hearing. If you have to think about what the letter was, they start piling up and then you miss the word. If you've already learned some or all of the letters by memorizing the dits and dahs, it may be even harder. Mike did it that way and has/had a rough time turning that part of the brain off. Becky learned by sound at first, but still learned some problem letters the wrong way by accident. Its probably impossible to entirely avoid, but it gets better and better with time. In summary, it has to be fast enough that you force a different part of your brain to just hear the full sound. Hope that helps clarify it a little bit better. 73 Becky es Mike

    Nice video. You two are very inspiring. Just hunted my first park in CW and have a QMX on order. Thinking of getting the power bank with trigger cable vs Talentcell which appears popular. One down side I could see with the power bank, is that while 10,000 mah will last a long time, I believe it would have 225 wah (22.5w x 10ah), which is over many us domestic airlines limit of 160 wah. So for air travel in the US, would likely be an issue. Please correct me if I'm wrong. If not flying, then not an issue. I would welcome your thoughts on this. Keep up the great work!

      Disclaimer: While I do have the background to do the math for this, I'm not an expert in TSA stuff or the specifics of how battery manufacturers rate things. My understanding of the TSA rule and our USB battery means that it is well below the limit. Let me explain. My understanding is the TSA rule is that it must be below 100 watt hours. Watt hours (or Wh) is a measure of the capacity of the battery -- how much power can be delivered over a period of time. The rating for the USB battery we started using is expressed in 10,000 mah. That's just the current part of the equation or how much current it can provide over time. To know the power, you'd need to know the current * the voltage. I believe the equation would be Wh = mAh x (V/1000). You'd really need to know what voltage they were using in determining that rating. I think its pretty save to assume it is probably 5V, the default output of USB. Based on that, Wh = 10,000 x (5V / 1000) = 50Wh. 50 Wh is well below the 100 Wh allowed by the TSA. Given the small size and fact that it is a standard USB battery instead of a funky hobby battery, I think you probably can feel even better about it. So why not factor in the power rating given of 22.5W? Given it is in watts, that's instantaneous power capability, not capacity. The power rating would be the maximum power that it can provide at any given time. It's different from the capacity because it's a measure of how much power it can provide all at one time. As long as what you are powering requires less than this at any given time, you'd know you are good to go. The capacity discussed above is more like the size of the tank and the power is the rate you'd be using it up. One way to think about it is that the capacity (Wh) is like the size of a gas tank, in our case 50 Wh. The power rating, in our case 22.5 W, is like the size of the pipe or how quickly you use what is stored in the tank. www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/lithium-batteries-more-100-watt-hours Hopefully that makes sense! 73 Mike es Becky

      @HamRadioDuo thank you for taking the time for such a detailed explanation. That helps quite a bit. That's good news when flying. The power bank appears to have more capacity for its weight than the Talentcell, so looks to be the winner. 73

      As a reminder that we figured out : Make sure you always plug in the trigger cable first so that it negotiates to 12V before plugging it into your radio (there should be a little lightening bolt on the display). Also, never plug in any other devices at the same time because some USB PD power banks will then output 5v on all ports. There are reports that the QMX specifically can be damaged from experiencing a 5V to 12V increase, even though it is still within its voltage range. 73 Becky es Mike

    "Us oldtimers..." haha -- decades ago I met many guys who had been taught Morse in the military -- I think one, at least, of the main places they taught it was Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Me, I learned it (in 1965, 12 years old) when it was required to pass "First Class" rank in Boy Scouts. Not the best, for sure, and how there are so many RUclips, etc. resources -- with no one advising me, at the age of 12, I looked it up in the dictionary and copied it to a 3X5 cards and memorized it well enough to pass the Scouts test! Then I got reel-to-reel tapes from DC's Rock Creek Amateur Radio Association (doesn't exist anymore I think, not sure) -- and built speed. First Morse class I was in was a couple years ago, when a couple locals ran one on Zoom. Interesting (I could already do 40 WPM or whatever, but watching 20 students, and the teachers... "different." I heard of the Koch method and the Farnsworth method/principle too -- hmm -- and the class teachers very much emphasized "This is gonna be hard! You're going to want to quit! Don't practice more than 15 minutes a day" (to not burn out). I was "taken aback" -- to me it was just fun! Anyway, different theories on it. I appreciate you said it's fun. I agree. Like you said, I realized over the years that ham radio was not the hobby I got into -- my dad said "You know, you can get a ham license and listen to them in Morse code!" It was Morse code that I got into. KE3Q
