Good to see a couple in amateur radio , my wife ain’t having none of it 🤷♂️👋👍
Thank you, we definitely feel fortunate to share this fun hobby together!! 73, Becky N4BKY es Mike N4FFF
I absolute love your videos. What is nice not one POTA hunter sends back to fast. POTA Rose is also a sweetie. I was listening to ISS stateside radio ham talking to a Aussie school this morning so missed my Kurt CW Ninja practice session so this afternoon I was listening with you both and writing down the callsigns and states which was great fun. Still have straight key envy Becky hi hi 🙂73 Phil GØBVD UK
Thank you Phil! Good idea to actually write things down to practice. No way do we try to head copy call signs :-) Might as well practice listening the same way. We love the CW community and how everyone always responds back at the speed we send out. 73, Becky N4BKY es Mike N4FFF (es POTA Rose)
Thanks for the shout out, Mike and Becky. Great video, as always, and adorable pup 😊 AA4SB
Thanks Shantel. We love to take her with us whenever we can. She is our POTA dog Rose :-) 73, Becky and Michael
Watching you guys, and getting the practice listening in is a pleasure. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Thanks Bill! Thanks for watching and the nice comments 😊. 73 Becky es Mike
i followed as I hadn't seen anyone use a straight key for pota or otherwise on youtube. great job!
rst is a whole ball game. you'll have to see what works for you and adjust as you go.
Thanks for joining our CW journey! I am still much more comfortable on the straight key even after having activated with a paddle. Getting better with RST for sure as we get on the air more! 73, Becky N4BKY es Mike N4FFF
Nice Becky. I prefere straight key and exact this speed. Why I notice no need for faster.
Also I prefere bigger gap on key and stronger spring.
Nice job with 5W CW

Thank you! We really enjoy activating QRP and I am way more comfortable on the straight key for sure! I can't send super fast and therefore everyone comes back at a speed we can copy :-) 73, Becky N4BKY es Mike N4FFF
@@HamRadioDuo if you catch my signal it will be slow, very small power between 90mW up to 5W CW , on 7Mhz and 14Mhz.

Thanks for your videos HR Duo, joining the ranks of those YT GOATs. Becky, are you left handed, or is it just the video? I don't have a key yet due to USPS issues (?!?!), but do you switch the sides of an iambic paddle if you're left handed?
Thank you Paul for the kind words about our videos! Yes, I am left handed. Because most everyone is right handed (including Mike) I made a conscious choice to just learn it the standard way. We "toss" the key back and forth a lot when trying to hunt parks back to back and it would be a pain to have to reverse the side each time. I never learned the other way so to me it's "Right" even though I'm "Left" HiHi
Good observation and question :-) 73, Becky N4BKY es Mike N4FFF
@@HamRadioDuo I got my first key today, an iambic paddle, and as a left handed person, the best position is when the key is upside down. A more direct question: I'm floating around this question. I have no experience in CW POTA, but the Yaesu FT-710 dropped to $860-ish, is it a safe entry point transceiver?
@@prburley Hmm. We don't have any direct experience with the FT-710. We tend to focus more on operating than gear so far. That one looks like it could be Yaesu's answer to the ICOM 7300. It's not tiny like the radios we bring with us but in exchange gives you a bigger screen and 100W. In my mind, those radios are great choices for using primarily as a home base radio that you perhaps take out for POTA when you are pretty close to your car.
We do have a different Yaesu in our truck. Other than their menus being not very intuitive, we love our radio and they have a great reputation. Their filtering and a few other features really does make them sound very good.
If you are looking for something for POTA specifically, it probably depends on if you are just walking a short distance from your vehicle or if yo want to hike to where you want to setup. We love the fact that with CW you can have the tiny radios like the QCX-mini, QMX, mountain toppers, or Elecraft radios. It's amazing what you can do with some of those radios that are about the size of a deck of cards. On the other hand, at hamfest we got to play with an ICOM 7300 with a friend at a nearby spot and its packed with great stuff, like the Yaesu. I'm thinking of getting one of those for home, and bringing when doing POTA next the camper.
That being said, Becky and I just activated entirely portable from a battery with 5w or less and got 10+ contacts from 2000+ miles away. That's fun stuff for us, even though higher power would make it more likely.
73 Mike N4FFF es Becky N4BKY
@@HamRadioDuo Thank you for your reply, due to this and others I'm headed up to Ham Radio Outlet in Milwaukee today to look at these things in person. I didn't realize it's not just purchasing a transceiver and a key, it's the antenna and I need a power bank. It'll all come together.
Hi from Madison, I really need to learn CW. KQ4LDY
