- QRP Morse Code, Rattlesnake Ledge Seattle, WA mountain hike. We love hiking and beautiful views. This adventure was no exception and of course we had to find out if we could make a CW contact from the top. We almost gave up, but then it happened. 5w into our QCX mini to a tiny antenna up in a tree and we contacted TN from over 2,000 miles away. What a fun day to hike, enjoy nature, and play a little radio.

❓WHO ARE WE?
We're Michael & Becky, also known as N4FFF and N4BKY. We're an adventure couple who also loves CW (morse code) and radio stuff. We are both trying to get better at CW so having two of us there trying to copy really helps us figure most of it out! We love adventures and this is another way for us to get out there and have fun together.
If you catch one of us on the air most likely we are both at the ready. We like to hunt POTA's and each make contact so don't be surprised if you hear from us both.
Please email us or leave a comment if you watch along and make contact with us someday. We'd love to hear from you!
73,
Michael and Becky

Thanks Phil, what more could we have asked for :-) Beautiful hike, amazing location, AND a CW contact!! 73, Becky es Mike
Fantastic video! Wow! Whata hike! Very cool contact. Yes - hiking up mountains and playing radio is the best! I love it. 73 es thanks very much for sharing.
Thanks Scott!! The hike was amazing and finding a spot to play radio was so much fun. We carry our small portable setup almost every time we adventure now. You just never know :-) 73, Becky es Mike
Beautiful views! Thanks for sharing ! ❤
It was a wonderful hike and location! 73, Becky es Mike
Thank you and yall enjoy your trip !
Thank you, we had a great time and can't wait to go back! 73, Becky es Mike
I live about 20 miles from North Bend where you are here. We get to enjoy these views whenever we want. 🙂
I'm a QRP guy on 40/80 meter SSB. I decided on QRP after several years of doing Field Day and renting generators and then driving home after each event knowing that in a big earthquake that half of what we had just used would not be available after the shaking stops. My main rig is a TX-500, drawing a mere 110ma current on receive. (Not quite the 58ma of your QCX-mini, but 1/3 of the power of even the best SSB rigs). Battery ops is extremely important to me. I'd love to learn CW to do the very thing that you've done here, but my brain just never seems to be able to understand CW. But kudos to the both of you for making this video and enjoying God's beauty in my back yard
Definitely envious of your QTH! We love QRP because of the simplicity and CW fits right in to that as well. It's been a challenge but there are a lot of resources available to help. Morse Mania app is where we both started. Thanks for the kudos! We are having a great time. 73, Becky es Mike
Wow, what a beautiful view. Thank you for sharing. The adventure can not get much better, can it? Hiking and ham radiio. What band is the QCX Mini you are using? Thank you again for sharing.
Hello again! Our QCX mini is 20m. We have a QMX on order that has multiple bands. We are really looking forward to it. We love doing this kind of thing and we were hoping it would be fun to see too. Thanks for following along, 73 Becky N4BKY es Mike N4FFF
What a beautiful trip! Bringing in the music at the overlook shot was a great edit. Hope to catch you on the air! 73, Mark KD7DTS
Mark, thank you for the comment! I'm jelly of the SOTAs you have over there in your neck of the woods. I've got you on hamalert so hopefully someday we can make it happen and catch each other on the air, but so far I haven't been able to hear you when it's gone off. 73 Mike N4FFF es Becky N4BKY
👋🏻 Just found your channel - nice video! Great job on highlighting the beauty of the area. I'm over here in Spokane, currently studying for my General (it's about time! 🙄). I'm planning to do some SOTA activations this Fall, SSB. 73 de KJ7LLX
We're glad you found us and hope you continue to join us. That area was so beautiful and we can't wait to get back. You'll have some great choices for SOTA or POTA activations. We hope you give CW a shot sometime too! 73 Mike N4FFF es Becky N4BKY
@@HamRadioDuo I definitely subscribed. I've done a few POTA activations, and have really enjoyed those. I'm looking forward to doing more of those, too. CW is on the list of things to learn - I've built a Morserino and I have a CW Morse key. SOOO much to learn!!! Loving it! 😁
Wow ! I like it .yall are very lucky Yall we're just on Wade mountain in Alabama right down the road from me the of the day. Keep the videos coming. Im learning from yall how to do CW.
Thank you! We need to activate Wade Mountain again sometime. It was a fun hike and our first SOTA activation. Mike activated that one, and now it's my turn! Good luck on your CW, we are having a blast with it! 73, Becky es Mike
Awesome
Thank you, it really was an amazing hike! 73, Becky es Mike
Nice!
Thank you Bill! It was a lot of fun and amazing location. 73, Becky es Mike

Thank you Spencer! So happy to have made contact with you from the mountaintop!! 73, Becky es Mike
Wow! What a beautiful place to play radio! N7BBQ
It was amazing and so fun to make a contact! 73, Becky es Mike
Michael & Becky, I wanted to leave a message of thanks to you both. I received my call sign today due to listening to your content, and the content of a few others, on RUclips for many weeks in the background. Becky I think I'm going to copy how you do an activation, you stay calm and use the "?" a lot. A biggest thanks to you both. --KE9BHN
That's the best news ever! Super congrats! Welcome to the community and looking forward to getting you in the log someday! Cw is definitely challenging but so rewarding. Let us know if there's any way we can help! 73 Mike N4FFF es Becky N4BKY
Thanks for sharing, looks like my country.

The views definitely were amazing and not like back home at our QTH in AL! 73, Becky es Mike
Start playing the Twin Peaks Theme…
Wow those views! How long did it take to get to the 3rd overlook?
Thank you, it was really an amazing hike with great views! The main hike to the first overlook took the longest (maybe an hour) after that about 8-10 minutes to the 2nd and then another 8-10 to the third. I think people just didn't know about the 2nd and 3rd and thus we had it to ourselves :-) 73, Becky es Mike
This is the kind of set up I’m dreaming on.
I’m wanting to learn to solder so I can build a QCX-mini or a QMX, still deciding which one I want. What band on a QCX-mini would you recommend for a beginner (if it really matters for POTA?
The 20m band will give you the most opportunity for contacts. It is the most popular POTA band and is the most versatile being open most often day and night. Also, 20m antennas are pretty easy to deploy for portable with lots of options. That is why our QCX-mini is 20m.
If you have the money and patience, you may want to consider paying extra and getting the pre-built one. I (Mike) built the first QCX-mini. If you love that kind of thing, it would be worth it, but if its just a means to and end like it is for me, it is a LOT of time and if you get somethign wrong it may not work in the end. I had a short on mine, let out the magic smoke when I powered it up, and had to order parts and fix it. I then over-voltaged it after only 2 contacts and permanently broke it. We now want a QMX to get more bands and so we are in the middle of the 6 month waiting for our order of a pre-built QMX.
If you don't mind the time investment and don't want to wait and want to save some money, it could be fun to build. It wasn't that hard, and great instructions, but a lot of time.
Another option would be to get a (tru)sdx which you can get for $140 pre-built on amazon or ebay.
Regardless of which path you go down, I suspect you are going to have a blast.

Have fun ke4hpq
Thank you, we are having a great time! 73, Becky es Mike
