- We break up a long drive with a POTA activation! Florida Caverns State Park was just off the highway on our way home and was a beautiful place to grab our gear, get in a wonderful little hike, and of course … POTA. We carry everything in two little backpacks in search of a spot to activate. QRP and CW just doesn’t get any better than that. Copy along and join us on our adventure into the Florida “jungle”.

❓WHO ARE WE?
We're Michael & Becky, also known as N4FFF and N4BKY. We're an adventure couple who also loves CW (morse code) and radio stuff. We are both trying to get better at CW so having two of us there trying to copy really helps us figure most of it out! We love adventures and this is another way for us to get out there and have fun together.
If you catch one of us on the air most likely we are both at the ready. We like to hunt POTA's and each make contact so don't be surprised if you hear from us both.

Do you ever POTA / SOTA while traveling?
So far, I've only really had two opportunities to POTA on the road: once each way in Ioway; and then I visited a friend in Chicago, did one long activation in Chicagoland one day while she was working, and then another shorter one in WI on my way back. Got plans to make that a much more regular thing, but I also have to give myself permission to do **short** activations like this one. For some reason, my brain says, "if I'm going to bother setting up, this better be for hours!" Some of that's just that I'm still evolving my setup in a way that I can do things quicker. If the setup takes a while, the activation should, too :-D
I am also just starting out (very first POTA video posted as @WD0OMHamRadio), and trying to figure out my approach, still. Appreciate all the different Ham RUclipsrs!

Funny you say doing POTA together, especially since it’s been a bit hit and miss with us recently…but there may be something in the works (since Mike may be stationary for a bit). Girl’s Day is all I’m going to say. 😉
Mike, I wish you the best and speedy recovery on your wrist surgery tomorrow. Hopefully in your medically induced stupor, you’ll still be able to send and make contacts, or at least they may be quite interesting QSO’s depending on the caliber of narcotics prescribed. Make sure you get it on video 😂

What a nice trip! I went to the Florida Caverns over 10 years ago. I did not see any of you bothered by mosquitoes so I wonder how it is up in the FL pandhandle. Not only it is extremely hot here but where I activate is swamp and mosquitoes are brutal. :-( What is the wire length for your K6ARK ant? I find that 20 ft mast is too short for the length of my antennas (42' and 62'). Especially when I saw Aaron W4ARB setting up his wire ant using the same mast that you have I realized 20ft won't be ideal for me. I'm glad Mike has recovered. Ah! Go back and listen starting 3:52 to 4:12. I hear those bugs or whatever they are when I go to the park. What are they? They get super loud! LOL. POTA ON!!!! KQ3Q
The antenna we used was a 20m EFHW and the wire is approximately 33' long. Because we use our QCX mini we can only operate on 20m right now so this antenna and mast work great. We know we are missing out on 40m but that band usually doesn't open up during the day during the summer. Our other EFHW has the ability to swap out wires and if you're does you could try out 20m with a shorter mast. P.S. This video was from before Mike's injury. Unfortunately he has surgery tomorrow (Friday) on his Left wrist. He wanted to go POTA today but the weather isn't cooperating.... HiHi 😁 73, Becky es Mike

We love to travel and find new spots to activate whenever when we can! Yes, the QCX has a memory keyer but we prefer, for now, to get the reps in and send manually. It keeps our brains focused when the pile-ups come in ... HiHi! Here is a link to the table: a.co/d/58e9zfy

Thank you Phil, we had a few struggles in this one. Hihi. Unfortunately we did this activation before the accident. Mike has surgery today to fix the fracture in his left wrist. Takes a good amount of time to edit videos and sometimes they get done out of order. Thank you for the concern! 73, Becky es Mike

You did have a pile up with the N9 stations I would have gone into panic mode you both did so well and of course when sending N9? you were getting 3 come back to you! Problem letters: Ls and Fs, Ps and Gs
We definitely have problems with sending F’s and L’s and why we joked about being in FL and having to send it. A LOT. Flipping them in our heads when trying to copy is hard too.
