Great Video , with a Hitchcockian Plot Twist.......Very....Compelling...Thanks
Genuine question: Why are so many RUclipsrs and Content Creators buying small cameras? I left the small camera body because I am now a filmmaker. I always felt that they were lacking so much when I had them on set. I am now shooting on Sony F3 and F5. I would honestly recommend these large camcorders, even for content creators. I say this is because if you want 'creativity,' you must face challenges, and these camera bodies will have your head spinning for days :/
The S5 ii footage looked way better and sharper, better color. I was actually surprised by the difference. I knew that camera B was the panasonic even before you said it. That said, I completely understand your choice. If you enjoyed the Sony more in your hands, then thats it. I had exactly the opposite feeling. Sony cameras feel sterile, robotic and cold to me. Its so subjective.
shutter angle big one IBIS second one. I hate gimbal I’m surprised the A7IV crop at 60fps. Glad I own the s5iiX then. There it wouldn’t be any advantage to switch to Sony

Anyone talk about flash photography in Lumix S5II and S5IIX. Have anyone noticed any difficulty? Like shutter lag, sync problem, AF problem while using flash accessories?
A great question! Being a filmmaker first, all of my lights are constant lights. Unfortunately, I won't be able to give any good insight here. Thanks for checking out the vid though!
I really love your text, I am a DaVinci Resolve user if it's ok for me to asked what did you use to make your text or get such good text in your video I would really love to have that conversation.
I appreciate the kind words! I also use Davinci Resolve, and you're in luck because it is super easy! All the onscreen graphics I use here on YoutTube as well as my paid work come from MotionVFX (I'll link it below). On RUclips, I tend to favor the mKeynote pack to keep it consistent across my videos. My next most used pack is the mTitleCinematic. Great question, and good luck out there! mvfx.co/TroyMairs.

First time watching your video, thanks for reviewing this monitor. Your voice reminds me of Elias Toufexis haha.

Great demo! Does the attach/release method need to be angled, or can it be done vertically? I'm wondering if 2 of these would work as a quick-release system for a table top (placed lengthwise on opposing edges of the top), and if they are capable of doing so without adding any wobble to the table.
Great question, and a cool idea! So I was just testing this idea out, and it seems you need a slight angle to get it to attach. You wouldn't be able to do a truly straight drop-in, but it might still qork for the table if it was long enough/had a little bit of flex. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@TroyMairs Thanks for looking into it!

What does the DC port connect to? What is the other end connector type??
@@michaelfrymus That will actually be buyers choice! The DC port is one of the ways to power the units. I often times utilize NPF batteries for power to avoid cables. There are times however that I leverage a larger rig with a V-Mount battery attached. In that scenario I would have a D-Tap to DC cable to power the unit. So the other end of my DC cable is a DTAP head, but you could get any number of different cable ends to fit with how you rig your camera. Great question! Thanks for checking out the video:)
May I ask how you get the recording start/stop of your ronin working? I just got my C80 and can't figure it out with my ronin RS3 pro.
Congrats on the C80, looks like an awesome camera! I'm not as familiar with that menu system, but I'd look for something like “enable remote control” in the menus. There is a possibility as well that the c80 is new enough that the Ronin firmware hasn't caught up yet to allow communication. I'd at least check to make sure you're on the latest version of your Ronin firmware! Thanks for checking out the video!
as a fellow over-researcher of gear I'd love to get, it's better to make a NAS with IronWolf Pro drives, not only is it safer with the redundancy of a RAID array, you can always expand little by little your storage pool by chucking a new disk into it when you need it, you just need to buy a NAS box with as many bays as you would need on the long term (like if you think you could eventually need 6 bays, you can start the build with a Synology box with that many bays, but with 3 IronWolf Pro 18TB drives and after a while, look for a sale to get another one). Don't know much about making a NAS from scratch, I'm not LTT tho lol
Thank you for sharing that insight! I really appreciate it! I think I better bite the bullet and do the NAS... I'd hate to be in the same position I am now in a few years lol. Thanks again!
Excellent in every way. Thank you.
Much appreciated! Thanks for checking out the video!
Sweet find of deals :) only in the US and Canada i think. That Rhino dolly is something.
Thank you! Yea I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the Rhino Dolly. We'll see if it's worth lugging around or not :)
@@TroyMairs Its like gimbals and sliders and easy rigs.. on every day basis it just lays around doing nothing, but for the projects where its needed you really need it and have to use a dollyto get the shot perfect. :) those tools i feel like its either Rent it when needed or rent it out to others and use it when you need it :P
The other piece that would be interesting is to have the digital back on the 500. Optics can always play a pivotal role on color shift, clarity and noise. Great exercise nonetheless. 🎉😊
You’re right, the digital back on the 500 would have been a very telling addition to this! Thanks for the insight!
You’re right, the digital back on the 500 would have been a very telling addition to this! Thanks for the insight!
Welcome back brother. Love your channel and vibe! Pls do keep posting.
I appreciate you saying that! I've missed this, and am pumped to get back into a routine! (Hopefully) Fortunately, I've been slammed with client work that keeps the lights on had to take priority. Not that I'm complaining, but I'm glad to have a little time to get on here again! Thanks again for the kind words!
What is the reason to shoot iso 800 film ? you get more grain the higher iso film you shoot. Ground rule would be that digital saves shadows better. And the film saves highlights better
I think there are a lot of reason one could make to shoot any ISO film really! Why do I default to Porta 800? I find that having an ISO 800 film loaded gives me a lot of flexibilty in various lighting conditions. I can get a decent exposure indoors as well as early in the mornings or late at night without having to slow my shutter speed down to a point where I need a tripod. Then during the day I can stop down my aperture/shutter speed and keep shooting the same roll. I find myself struggling a bit more when I shoot Porta 160 or Gold 200 because of how much light they need. I like the added versatilty and the colors of Porta 800 are ones that I find to be quite pleasing (which is very much a personal preference thing). Yes, the tradeoff is a bit more grain but its a trade I'm usually willing to make. :) Thanks for checking out the video!
@@TroyMairs Hmm but you do know that with that camera (and others that use camera backs) that you can just shoot 3 photos on one back with iso 160 and then switch it out for iso 800 or B and W.. ? I do that all the time on my Mamiya 67 pro.. and thats is why i sometimes pick up that camera instead of my Pentax 6x7 camera. Some times its a sad situation to be in if you see something that would be amazing in Black and White, but you still have 8 photos with color.. than the cameras with film backs come in handy. I understand the lighting part and that is easyer to have iso 800 an then stop down the light, but you will get more grain with a highter iso film than with a lower iso film. I personally like that.. grain don bother me if it looks a certain way.. (digital chroma noise is not pleasent) If you like a finer grain you could go lover iso or develop it one stop under and then set the camera to undercrank it The reason you get the grain is that the film negatives emulsion has silver crystals in it to be light sensitive, and they vil react diffenrent and be bigget and more visible when theres more of it. Btw love your videos as always. :) did you btw have a look at the c80 from canon ?? ;) maybe its time to go back
@ You make a solid point with the swappable backs! That is probably the better approach here to better utilize both the camera and the appropriate film! My problem is that I don't like to carry things with me😂 So I usually grab a camera and go, so the film that is loaded has to work for everything. (This is admittedly a character flaw!) I did see the C80… what a monster of a camera🔥Pair that with the 24-105 f2.8 and you could shoot anything!
@@TroyMairs I find the photos in the video super nice. And i like the grain :) it was just because it sounded like you didnt like that there was so much grain. And the reason is the high sensitive iso film stock. When i like more visible grain i shoot full frame (Canon F1n) then you get even more grain. Yeah the Rf 24-105 f 2.8 and maybe the RF 15-35 f 2.8 (I do like the wide angle) The c400 and c80 does look nice, but how I would love it to have been a DGO sensor like my two C70 cameras.. Keep up the good work with the videos 🤟
Thanks! I do tend to lean into grain (or even add it in post to digital files). I was surprised to see just how different the grain/noise where when comparing the two side by side. I think I expected the noise at ISO 800 on a digital sensor to more noticeable and I was genuinely surprised at the disparity when I saw it for myself in the video. All that to say, I too generally like a heavy grain! I don't know if I had picked up on the C80 not having a DGO sensor, that's a bummer.. Hey, I appreciate you always watching my videos! Thank you!
Great comparsion! 🙌🙌🙌Here are some suggestions. The resolution comparison should take into account the focal length and censor size (44mmX33mm and 56mmX56mm), so to compare the resolution, you should have the similar focal length. And for the colour comparison part, the scans from the lab were already colour adjusted, it is suggested to scan ur own negatives and remove the colour mask on ur own, so the colour will be straight "FILM COLOUR" rather than the scan colour from the lab (which just some film look preset). By the way, you can do a self-timer on the lens in 500 series cameras, there is a V, X and M. Pull the level from M to V and change the shutter mode to the T, and it will release after 10 seconds.
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to check it out and for sharing your thoughts! Which I might add, are very insightful! My mind went right to the field of view disparity between the lenses/sensor sizes, I hadn't really considered how comparable the resolution might be! Also, thanks for the self-timer tip! I learned something new today :)
that was interesting...seems the portra likes the reds..I have come across the same types of problems with the digital sensor...favouring greens....cooler.....but then I find the clouds can be offish also ranging from tinted greens & blue-ish tints rather than...white...or...grey/dark grey clouds,in saying that...the in-house wb dropper does work a treat at time of shooting & I get better results.I am currently toying with edits removing the blues mostly in the HSL module. The portrait you shot I liked, & as You stated, the film was more punchier.Lending itself to the reds again🤷♀,I dont know...im no expert.
Interesting is a good word for it... I'm no expert either so you're in good company! Thanks for sharing your thoughts here and I appreciate you watching!
Digital sees in the dark! Film not close! Medium format is 56mmx55.. aprox! Film is correct Digital is fancy bigger 35mm format! It simply ain't Easier to shoot 35mm film or digital.. Kodak film unaffordable for me. I use BW 35mm self processed. I never liked Hasselblad! I used many years ago, Medium Format was Mamiyaflex TLR!
Thanks for sharing your perspective! Digital does get to see in the dark, always a welcomed feature when you need it!
I love my CFV100c on my 500cm with the old lenses, but with Film there is some magic
Ahh no doubt! The old/new combo is special, especially the 100c and its ability to shoot in a lower bit depth for a faster read out/less rolling shutter. It's definitely a photographic experience unlike any other! Thanks for checking out the vid!
I find it difficult to compare colors from analog and digital. Every scan is just an interpretation of the negative. Otherwise a good video.
That's so true, one of the things I wanted to see for myself was how/where the colors deviated, so I could make some more informed decisions when trying to recreate a certain "film" quality when editing digital photos. In a perfect world I'd be able to run that film through multiple scanners and plot the variations, buuuut this was enough for me right now :) Lol Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your thoughts!
this was a fun one to watch, great to see the comparison!
@@ishkhanghazarian Well I appreciate you hanging out for the vid!:) thank you!
You kind of need to do a comparison with a newer emulsion like ektar/portra 160 or 400 and have it scanned on an imacon for a fair comparison.
@@gavinlagrange6322 That may very well be the case, thanks for sharing your insight! For selfish reasons, I wanted to see how it stacked up against Porta 800 because that's my go-to film stock. So I apologize if those results weren't quite as helpful to you! I appreciate you checking out the vid!
Nice comparison, though the white balance and color comparison portion is a bit superfluous. Film stock, lens coatings, lighting on the day, which developer, development method, which brand of scanner, how the operator white balances the scan... etc all affects color rendition on digital files from film. 2 people with 2 identical cameras shooting the same film stock on the same day will have different colors.
@@DoggoCatto-xz2jg Thanks for checking out the video! Yea no doubt, there are soo many factors that come in to play with that color shift, and its so easily corrected that it shouldn't be a deciding factor one way or the other. It was pretty interesting to see though! I appreciate you sharing your insight!
hey there ,that green cast is strange...what light are you using don't think it has anything to do with the camera
@@ADFCHRONICLES I thought that too, but I noticed the green cast outdoors in daylight as well. (WB set to 5600k no shift). The light is an Intellytech Megalite Cloth 3.0. Which rendered close to neutral when shot on film. So I’m inclined to think it wasn't the light. Is there anything else I'm missing? (thanks for checking out the video btw!)
Great vid!
@@euphonia001 Much appreciated! Thanks for checking it out and got commenting!
Hey Troy, great video. I'm thinking about getting a CFV100C. I'm curious if you've tried comparing film Vs the CFV100C back on the film camera with the same lens.
Thanks! I appreciate you checking it out! I haven't run that specific test, but it would lend to some really interesting results as the lens characteristics would be uniform throughout (all though the field of view would be slightly different still given the size of the film compared to the size of the digital sensor). My main objective here was to see if I could come to terms with parting ways with one of the independent systems :) I am curious now though, so if I run that test I'll put it up here! Thanks again!
One word, OPEN GATE. Ok, i guess two words.. That's why I'm considering that camera going from the a7iii. But, i have lenses with Sony E mounts. And im guessing that didn't work in the other camera?
Open is a great selling point! If you need it, there is no way around it! Thanks for checking out the video and sharing that single word! LOL 😂
I get static noise when using the wireless mode? Any recommends to fix that?
Hey! I appreciate you checking out the video, I wish I could be of more help here but I didn't experience this myself. My first thought has to do with the cable connections on either the transmitter or receiver side, so maybe audition different cables? I'm sorry that's been your experience thus far!
@TroyMairs i was able to fix it thank you. What's your typical audio workflow for a basic talking head interview? I'm new to this and using DaVinci resolve.
@ That’s great to hear! When I can, I try to have 2 sources of audio going for interviews. A boom mic rigged above the talent as well as a lab mic. I lean on the tentacle track e/sync e system to record and sync my audio files in post
I agree it is time we have global shutters in our cameras, this feature would be a significant improvement and selling point.
No doubt! We're seeing more and more of them hitting the market, give it a few years and I'd wager it'll be much more commonplace. Thanks for checking out the vid!
Im applying this review to the a7cii and comparing this to the s5ii. Shall I pick up the a7cii??
@@adlerz5433 Oh great question! I don't have a personal experience with the A7cii, but I found that camera to be very impressive omat launch! I understand it shares the same sensor, so I think you could apply everything from this review relating the image quality. You could also apply the aspects of the “Sony Ecosystem” as well. I can't really speak on the ergonomics/battery life/or overheating though. I've consider buying an A7cii myself, but I'm pretty deep in the Sony ecosystem at this point. Thanks for checking out the video!
excellent review, sold me on this plate
Thanks Gabriel! I've enjoyed it too, thanks for checking out the vid!
Great stuff
Much appreciated!
I havent tried it yet but I would love to see a book light compared to a softbox with a crate shooting through a sheet of diffusion 🤔 Ive seen a large umbrella with diffusion give great results too. Book lighting always seems to be my favorite look.
I agree! Book lighting always seems to do it for me too. I'll make a note of that thought, and maybe I'll find a day soon to test these different setups and share what I find! Thanks for checking out the vid!
Panasonic S5IIx is huge in size and weight. Sony is much smaller and lighter. I like small
Same! I've been favoring a surgical approach myself! Small and lightweight, trimming any extra fat.
@@TroyMairs That`s why i have the A7CII and it`s my all time favorite. Shot in the day with the NEX7 and i think it`s even better than that.
Thank you, I've been having this confusion on those two cameras, but deep down I know what I want it's Sony A7 iV
Then it sounds like you know what's up! Lol thanks for checking out the video!
My desicion was as owner of GH5 and GH6 not strict to be again Panasonic but i was ready for sony full frame (but overheating for me was big issue if I have to choose sony)
That's a tough call! Maybe something like the FX3 or A7sIII fit the fill if you're a little leary toward the A7IV but want to stay in the Sony Full Frame line?
Give me 8k and a Sony VR lens for future VR content.
Fair! That is uncharted territories for me, but It'll almost certainly pose an interesting new creative challenge in the future! Thanks for checking out the vid!
My menu is not like that it’s frustrating because functionality is low
I've heard they did a new software update since this video that changed the interface quite a bit. I haven't done the update myself, but I've heard some similar feedback. Sorry that's the case!
