I sold my a7IV for the S5II back in February, and couldn’t be happier!!!
Things that are better in real world use, shooting run&gun for 6 months with each:
LCD screen, IBIS, controls and customization, shutter angle, open gate, waveforms, Framemarkers, switching from photo and video in a pinch, exposing and grading Log footage, overheating.
AF in the S5II works fantastic in the 1-area using eye detect.

I'm right there with you in the shutter angle and open gate! It was painful to have to turn those down! Lol I do find it interesting that you prefer the S5ii's switch from photo/video modes to be better, I quite like Sony's implementation of it. Goes to show how subjective it can be. Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your thoughts! Hopefully this can help someone make their decision!

    • @9adriano21

@@TroyMairs the problem with the way the a7IV does the photo/video switching, is that in a7IV I had setup the custom modes (C1, C2…) as my different framerates video, since it doesn’t have Shutter Angle. So whenever I switched from video to photo I was on a C profile, meaning it was usually not the mode I needed for photo (just the default manual).
With the S5II, because of shutter angle I don’t even need to use the C modes for video, so with one flick of the dial I switch back and forth from manual video and photo, and it remember the settings I was in.

I like sony, but in this duel Lumix wins for me. For video - mega stabilizer, Open Gate, anamorph support, in cooperation with leica: very high-quality color rendering. Cooling, cheaper SD cards, special price, all original lumix lenses are parafocal, do not breathe, have a smooth aperture, L-mount: Lumix, Leica, Sigma, DJI, canon EF also works with adapter. Robust body resistant to dust and splash proof. Good LCD and peaking assistant, many film functions. CONS: it doesn't have as perfect autofocus as Sony, it doesn't have a live HDMI 50i output

I had to come back to this thread. After years of Sony diehard shooting, I hate to say it…
Hard pill to swallow, after a couple Luxury Wedding Shoots, Image, Codecs, Cinema type settings, shutter angle, metering features, open gate, B-RAW… no overheating… I’m definitely in different shoes now.

    • @juliuskaraffa2556
      @juliuskaraffa2556 7 месяцев назад +5

@@farshaxan Yes, and the opinion has not changed. Since I am satisfied, I invested even more: I bought the entire Lumix Prime lens f1.8 series. They are designed for filmmakers. SPro 16-35 + Spro 24-70 + 24-70 for Photo/video/TV and Sirui 50mm anamorhp for video/little bit photo. The colors are amazing, the stabilizer has no competition. The focus is sufficient. What could panasonic improve: fullframe 4K 50p, lower latency via HDMI, Fullframe FullHD 50p phase auto focus. Less rolling shutter effect at 4K and 6K - probably only a new model will solve this. After looking at the results 3 of my friends are considering buying a Lumix S5II (S5IIx). Excellent price/performance ratio. It is not only a video camera but also a great photo. I use it for: low budget commercial videos (social networks and TV), TV programs, live events and hobby photos. Handheld, autofocus, opengate 6K, internal recording - no problem :)

Hey fellow filmmakers! 🎥 Had to drop my two cents on the Sony A7 IV vs. Panasonic S5 II debate, especially after owning both powerhouses for a solid six months.
Now, don't get me wrong, the A7 IV is a photo marvel. The dial that keeps settings intact during mode switches is pure genius. But let's dive into the video realm, shall we? 🎬
The Panasonic S5 II has completely won me over, especially after half a year of hands-on experience. First off, that menu interface is a dream - user-friendly and a breeze to navigate. And can we talk about the 6K open gate and the magnificent IBIS? It's like having a cinematic wizard right in your hands for every shot. The A7 IV might get a bit heated after a 45-minute 4K 60fps session in 30°C weather, but the S5 II stays cool with its fan - a total game-changer.
And let's not forget the monitoring tools on the S5 II - waveforms, LUT support, the whole shebang. Perfect for those who want to finesse their shots to perfection. Plus, the seamless compatibility with the Ronin Gimbal? It's a match made in videography heaven.
Sure, the A7 IV can output stunning shots, but the S5 II takes it up a notch with RAW capabilities - a feature that, unfortunately, the A7 IV missed out on. And firmware updates? Panasonic is on top of their game, constantly fine-tuning and enhancing the S5 II experience. Sony, on the other hand, not so much in the update department.
Now, let's talk value for money. After half a year with both, the S5 II is a video powerhouse without burning a hole in your pocket. Sony might have the upper hand in the photo game and a broader lens selection, but if you're all about that cinematic life, the Panasonic S5 II is the clear winner in my book.
So, to my fellow creators out there, especially those who've had both in their arsenal - give the Panasonic S5 II a serious look. It might just be the video sidekick you didn't know you needed. 🌟 #TeamS5II #FilmmakerLife

I sold my a7iv for the 6k open gate video, shutter angle, full hdmi port, and way better in body stabilization. I hate using gimbals because of time constraints during shooting. One thing that should be said about the ‘little bit cheaper and plasticky’ comment is that you were likely referring to the lens while comparing a GM £1500 to an S series prime. £550. The S5ii x uses the same materials for its body and LUMIX cameras have traditionally been more robust in terms of durability and weather sealing.

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  Год назад +1

That's a fair point! The lenses themselves aren't necessarily a fair comparison given the price differences, they are the most comparable lens option in my opinion though. So I think it is at least a noteworthy thing for a potential buyer to consider. As far as the body itself goes, you're probably right in that the two are much closer in build quality. I'd still give the nod to Sony but it may be negligible.

I've had the A7 IV for more than a year and I quite like it but having just bought the S5 IIx and tested for a couple of weeks... I must be honest, I prefer it over the Sony. Overheat is a big issue for me but the compatibility with EF lenses, better stabilization, recording to SSD, open gate and menus that make sense are the main reasons.

The real biggest win for the S5iix is the ability to record video and stills directly to SSD, record pro-res, internally/braw over usb c AND HDMI is insane. $129 for a 2tb T7 ssd vs $400 for 2tb of cf express type b storage is a big factor. The fact the S5iix supports EF/L mount/m42/MFT/PL lens systems is, from a video perspective; a definitive win.

I've got myself in a trouble, because had mistaken first for second in EOS R6. R6 overheated and needed a cooldown 6 times at one project. And now - no expensive FF camera without cooling will be my choice.

They're both great cameras but it's all going to come down to very small preferences in the grand scheme of things. For me I went the opposite direction and went panasonic. Coming from a GH5 I liked the panasonic menu system better, I've been digging a lot of the L mount lineup lenses and a lot of the work that has gone into those, but the most decisive point for me was V-Log color. I work with a lot of different color profiles from a lot of different cameras but V-Log I find is just more neutral and easier to dial into custom looks for me. All that said I had to buy new cameras for my department at work and wound up going Sony for those. Why? Because we needed a combination of cinema cameras and hybrid cameras to work along side one another seamlessly and the FX6/FX9 are just much better offerings in the cinema camera space than what panasonic has right now. Maybe if the EVA - 02 comes out someday it'll change that dynamic but right now there's a space for both systems, tho that space is closing rapidly.

@@TroyMairs I think the key is scalability, or how I'm able to achieve scalability in both environments. For work each camera will be dedicated to a specific kit and which will have a specific purpose, you need a cinema camera you grab an fx6 and go to town, if you need a mirrorless you grab an a7 and do what you gotta do. For my personal camera I need something that can be adapted to wear a lot of hats and that's where the S5 shines. I can run and gun with the S5 as an everyday carry mirrorless just like the A7 but I can also build it up into a cinema camera with some addtional rigging, monitor, hard drive recorder etc, and I have the ability to really dial in the record format settings to fit other people's work flows rather than the set work flow we use in house at work.
S5 lets me adapt to other people's production worlds, where as the sony gives me more tools for building a solid world for a team of a lot of people.

I thoroughly enjoyed your review of these two cameras. While the S5II(x) may appear to be a better option based on specifications and features, I currently find myself more drawn to the A7IV for its superior autofocus, impressive lens selection, and comprehensive ecosystem.
If someone reads this, and like me, have delved into a deeper study of these cameras, you'll recognize that both produce exceptional images, as long as you have the appropriate lenses. In my opinion, the S5II(x) leans more towards videography, while the A7IV is more geared towards photography. If you're primarily a photographer seeking exceptional video capabilities while simultaneously expanding your collection of superb GM lenses, the A7IV will prove to be a valuable investment, especially when considering future cinema-line camera purchases.

For me, the main point of Sony are the GM lenses, they are great !
The 35mm and 50mm GM are ultra sharp wide open with very good microcontrast, they are just fantastic lenses. The 135mm GM is slightly less sharp wide open (still very good) and ultra sharp stopped down, the 85mm GM has one of the best rendering I ever seen from a 85mm lenses, colors and bokeh are very nice.
Now, from Panasonic, for me there are only 2 fantastic lenses :
The 24-70mm S Pro with extraordinary microcontrast, sense of volume and depth (the Sony 24-70mm GMII is far from this level even if it's as sharp).
The 50mm S Pro, not as sharp wide open as the 50mm GM, it is only f1.4 but with better sense of depth, and nicer colors in my opinion.
The little 50mm and 85mm S are very good lenses, they are very sharp with good rendering, but they are not as good as the S Pro lenses.
About the 70-200mm S Pro f2.8, I tried two samples and they were not as good as the 24-70mm, weight is a problem too, especially compared to the 70-200mm GM II.
I also use Sigma lenses on my Panasonic cameras, I have a love/hate relationship with them, most of them are very sharp with very good microcontrast, but colors and and overall rendering are much less nice than the S Pro and GM lenses to my eyes, I don't speak about Leica lenses because I only owned the SL 50mm f1.4 and they are too expensive for me.
AF is better on the A7IV, even if some reviews say they are equal, I have both camera (S5II and A7IV) since they're out and using both photo and video, I'd say the Panasonic is about 80% of the Sony
IBIS is much better on the S5II, every reviewer saying they are equal must have a serious Sony bias.
Just an annoying thing on both cameras, the temporal noise reduction. The S5/S1/S1H have better detail rendering in low light with most profiles.

Lumix all day until you want to hook up an external monitor and pull focus manually than it sucks. There is so much lag and the only way to improve that lag is to turn the audio recording off and externally record your audio but it’s still has more lag through the hdmi port than Sony.
I would have picked this camera up for sure but with Sony’s better af system and faster hdmi port for manually focusing the Sony is a no brainer even though the Lumix is feature packed and the overall better camera on paper it’s not in use.

@@jimgunderson6439 Thanks Jim! I love the conversations down in the comments 👍 I don’t have many other “camera buffs” in my inner circle but I love talking cameras so this is a great outlet!
I have been using the Hollyland Mars M1 monitors exclusively for about 8 months or so. The (almost) sole reason is that they have the built in wireless video transmission and I really enjoy being able to view a feed on a larger directors monitor primarily , or sometimes on a second M1 monitor when I’m not the one operating my camera. If I had to rig/power a seperate transmitter I would never do it and the. I’d be missing out on those benefits that come with it.
It’s not a perfect monitor, but the color rendition is great and the brightness is useable. I don’t particularly like the placement of the HDMI port, and I wished the DC-In port had a locking connector, but I can deal with those things :)

The s5iix is an amazing tool all of these cameras can get the job done except the A7iv. It overheats like crazy at the worst times. Do not buy and do not listen to any reviews of people telling you to buy if you do video. It overheats in 3 minutes down here in Florida. It’s the only Sony I’ve ever had a problem with. Do not use on any paid shoots. It will let you down if you use 4k 10 bit. 4k 10 bit is unusable might as well buy a $2500 brick with the words 4k 10 bit etched into the stone. My DJI pocket 3 does 4k 10 bit with no problems. No brainer get the Panasonic.

I live in South America and it is Hot and dry here in the summer, Nothing like Florida at all. More like California and I get over heating a lot. And yes I have all the settings to high, leave my LCD out etc etc.. But again I am shooting 90% in 60P 4K. As per the overheating … I have been using the A7 IV intensively from it’s release and it never overheated or came even close to it. I shot many all day events, when the recording ran 4 hours continuously and no problems at all. I love this camera but I have few complains: 4K/50p only in crop mode (the same applies to the S5IIX), the display quality could be better and the magnification of the EVF is weird, as it is hard to see the whole image and so it is harder to see the framing for me (I didn’t have this problem with the A7III or other cameras). Otherwise it is an excellent camera and the oversampled 4K image is fantastic and hard to beat. And the low light performance is also excellent with the second native ISO 3200, which is very clean.

I've been a Nikon photographer since high school and for the last 15 years i've been renting Canon 5D's and then Sony mirrorless for all my video work. Now I own a Z8 and I can confidently say I have no reason to touch an A7S3 ever again. Never having to deal with Prores ever again is lovely. the Panasonic S5, Sony A7S3, and Nikon Z9/8 have 0.2 spread dynamic range between them all. Cant speak for Panasonic, but the files of the Nikon are way easier to extract the maximum out out, and their video menu features are more fleshed out than Sony. You cant really compare because the Nikon is $1000 more and is one of the best photographic cameras ever made, but consumers will be doing themselves a disservice by not paying attention to Nikons next iteration of their less expensive bodies.

Most camera systems have matched eachother in terms of specs and image quality, which means there are two factors that really differentiate systems, in my opinion- Features/Tools and glass. I would say that Lumix has been killing it when offering professional tools and features. Waveforms, shutter angle, anamorphic desqueeze, etc really make the camera easier to use and better in professional environments. Sony's E-mount offers an insane amount of options for glass and AF for solo/run and gun. It depends on what you are creating and it's just a matter of picking the right tool for the job.
I would go for the Lumix and day. The fact that it has open gate is the biggest factor. Open gate is a must, once you've used it and it makes the camera so much more flexible. My issue with Sony is that it takes so long for them to update their cameras and add features. I'm not saying Sony makes bad cameras, but I feel like they lack key features in the video department and not having open gate really gimps the camera if you are shooting anamorphic.

Right after watching several other videos comparing these 2 video cameras, I made an Educated guess & came to the conclusion that the you were Definitely going to go with the LUMIX over the Sony.
The List of Reasons That I thought that you were going to go with the LUMIX over the Sony are still the same
    1. LUMIX S52 & S52X both Beat the Sony at Eliminating Overheating Completely. The Sony offers no Solution to what I’ve been reading are serious overheating issues That The Sony Full Frame A7 series cameras from the A73 Until Now all face. This includes all Sony Super 35 or APSC Sensord cameras except for the 3 Sony Cinema Line Cameras, The FX3, FX30 & The FX6.
    2. The lack of Entirely fixing The Green and purple fringing and tint That is a nightmare to ColorGrade out of skin tones.
Although this is something that overtime Sony has gradually worked at reducing in skin tones, it’s just not something that Sony has taken a full intent approach at eliminating with the introduction of any new Camera which to most is ridiculous at this point.
This is something Canon has never had an issue with & it’s something that LUMIX hasn’t had an issue with either.
    3. Sony’s Have Begun To develop a widespread online reputation for being uninspiring to shoot on/with overtime.
    4. The Panasonic S52 & GH6 Series cameras are commonly referred to as Inspiring Cameras to Want to get up, take out & Shoot Cinema On. Most attribute this to the more accurate color science That results in more natural looking skin tones coming from the LUMIX Series cameras.
    5. Therefore, I’m just
Surprised that You didn’t find the Sony to be more Clinical or Technical to Shoot with when compared to the LUMIX S52.
    6. The LUMIX is loaded with over double the Professional all intra, SSD Pro Res & Raw Recording Codecs which all open up the option of delivering Pro Cinema Quality footage whether shooting Music Videos, Weddings, Engagements, & Clothing Commercials or product work For Corporate Clients.
    7. The LUMIX definitely offers far more performance with Shutter Angle, Open Gate, anamorphic de squeeze etc compared to the Sony which offers none.
    8. The LUMIX also offers Waveform, VectorScopes, Unlimited Recording in all Intra Resolutions & Frame Rates Internally with Pro Res at 1080 Internally While offering pro res & Raw out to ssd as a Future proof of their camera.
    9. LUMIX does this at almost half the price.
    10. So far superior performance for almost half the price.

My biggest draw back is the lowlight capabilities of the s5 ii (x). Im a documentary filmmaker and want to be able to shoot in any situation and tell a story (also my main freelance work is where I dont have control over the light) , the a7s III is a little above my budget, in NL (Where im from) they are 4200 euros which is 4500 US dollars. That is not worth the low light performance for me, so I gravitated towards the A7 IV or the the s5 II (X). What is your opinion about the low light performace of the s5 ii (X), do you think it holds up?

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  2 месяца назад

@@OffTheHorizon I'd expect both bodies to perform very similarly in low light, all things being equal. When it comes to the more budget friendly, low light option the s5iix probably wins because of the available lenses! Their lineup of prime lenses are quite afford and would be helpful in low light given their wider aperture. The sony equivalent will be a bit more expensive.
Great question! Thanks for checking out the vid!

The S primes, with the 67mm front, actually don't have focus breathing - pretty wild at that price. The big draw of the S5ii for me is the anamorphic support + open gate - on even the FX3 I can't get a desqueezed image of my 1.5x anamorphic, that means Id need a monitor 100% of the time. Then on top of this, Panasonic implemented the first ever anamorphic IBIS ... wild, I can just slap my Atlas Mercury on the S5ii and handhold shoot - no gimbal, no monitor, I can even where it around my neck during travel. Panasonic needs an FX3/30 style body, and Sony needs open gate, anamorphic support + cinema features ... at least in their FX line

    • @TroyMairs

The S prime's lack of optical breathing really is quite an accomplishment for any lens, let alone for one at that price point! I bet the Mercury on an s5ii is an AWESOME combination. Thanks for commenting and checking out the video! :)

I want a good camera for macro dentistry.

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  7 месяцев назад +1

I find that extra megapixels show their hand when cropping an image 100% and higher, or trying to print larger photos like billboards or posters.
When it comes to macro images, the right lens is going to make the biggest impact, over the megapixels. Both of the sensors are going to provide excellent resolution for that. Macro photography is often done a narrow apertures, requiring lots of light. So an argument could be made that a “lower” megapixel camera might be better as they tend to have less noise in low light environments. But we’d be splitting hairs at that point!:)

Sony cameras are seen as the standard in the market, similar to Apple, thanks to their effective marketing on platforms like RUclips. However, they may not necessarily be significantly better than their competitors. Sony's focus on creating a perceived strong ecosystem palys a huge part in that.
While there is often talk about the variety of lenses available, most filmmakers typically use prime lenses or standard zooms. It's uncommon to find a Sony shooter using a lens that cannot be found in other camera mounts.
Sony offers excellent cameras, but that might not be the sole reason why many people prefer them. I believe it's because people feel like part of an exclusive club when they proudly mention using Sony (or Canon). Ultimately, it's important to remember that all of these cameras are great options in today's market.
