I don't think that the state properly tested the car when they measured the noise level. I believe that the state is required, per its own procedures, to first start the car and have it operating in whatever the normal default driving mode is, not switching to the loudest track or sport mode for the purpose of failing the vehicle. It's obvious that the state was trying to cover for the cop's mistake in issuing a ticket because the car had a track mode. According to the state and cop logic, every car registered in this state that had track mode as an option should have its registration revoked. Do we punish drivers whose cars have the capability of achieving very high speeds on the roads and require everybody to have a speed governor that limits speed to 65 mph?

So, according to the cop, it's illegal to drive a car in the state that has a track mode. If that's the case, then all of the car owners in California who have cars with factory-installed track mode should have their registrations suspended.

fwk i just financed a hyundai elantra n with hyundai motor finace. after doing some research im screwed. hmf has bad service 1 star and warranty claims get declined 90% of the time. 😢

Has anyone experienced “losing” the octane learning? I just bought an Elantra N (6MT). I was hitting the 18-19 psi on the original tank of gas. Then I filled up when it was nearly empty with 93 octane Shell. Drove to work the next morning (it’s a 45 mile commute of mostly interstate). The car octane learned successfully, as I was hitting the 18-19 psi/boost on the way home that day. Fast-forward a couple of days. I’m off work and take the car for a backroad drive, and now it’s limited to 15-16 psi. What’s going on?

This is a problem with the manufacturer. Different states and cities have different noise ordinances but they are pretty similar. Just because you buy a car does not mean it is legal to drive or street worthy for your area. That's why you need to know both your state and local laws before you purchase. I'm surprised a lot of people don't know this. . .

Everyone in the community knows what a JB4 is. They say it's undetectable but I call bs. Why would you risk a warranty denial on any new car? Unless you are financially prepared to pay out of pocket to replace stuff that modding it will break , and it will break something, leave it alone. How does the tech know exactly what the stock ecu limiter rpm is unless he was banging the limiter trying to be cool for his buddies that think he is cool because his car made popcorn noises. 😂 Just my theory as a master tech. 🤷

For the most part Hyundai and Kia’s are bad buys especially post 2015. I hate when I see a person that says oh mine latest 240k miles. I’m happy yours did but most of them don’t last very long.

I’m not really into modifying cars in general. This car is plenty exciting to me as is. I’ve always felt that manufacturers spend billions developing, fine tuning, and troubleshooting their designs. I’m not going to improve on that and maintain reliability and usability. I’m not smarter than the engineers who designed it.

I must have missed something here. So having the track mode is ok, as long as you dont use it ? Or is it illegal to even have equipped on the car ? I sounded like the cop said it was ok to have untill he got caught using it....and now has to have it removed.

Both States and local municipalities are allowed to have codes and ordinances that say no to loud exhausts even if the car came that way from the factory. Just because it's federally approved, it doesn't mean that you could go around and blare the exhaust noises. I live in a canyon and I could say that it sucks. And the worst offenders aren't exotics (whose engines sound like a work of art), no they are these inline 4 turbocharged ricers who think that their cars sound good.

The other option the owner has is to sell it out of state.

The state should require Hyundai to sell and designate these vehicles as non-road race cars that can only be used at certified racing tracks. They should also require these vehicles to be stored at a race site or a commercial racing garage and in non-residential areas just like a bulldozer, tractor or crane. Saler of this make and model should only be allowed to professional racing companies and not to individuals.
