This is like going back 14 years for me when I first got into training dogs. Positive reinforcement introduces behaviors, negative reinforcement makes them reliable. “You must praise or reward the dog equal to or double the level of aversion used”. Kohler and timeless.

I train my guide dogs for stress levels and for certain situations. I start stress training with a speaker playing whatever noise we're training for, and gradually get louder as the puppy plays. Eventually they're sleeping with the speaker at full volume. Once it's time to go to the train, the dog is already comfortable with the noise, so now we watch the movement and the people while we enjoy a snack. Once they feel comfortable we investigate and maybe take a short ride. Situational training comes at the top and bottom of steps, at intersections, and with cars trying to run us over. We do this to teach the dog how they should react in those situations so they can effectively communicate with me, and avoid danger.

We see this so much in dog rescue when working with dogs on threshold/barrier manners or calming. So many dogs freak out when the leash comes out or when you get to the door, dogs being the narcissists that they are they take the path of lease resistance to gain access to what they want. So their previous owners frantically put the leash on the dog, the dog learns the more they flop around the faster the leash goes on and faster they get outside. You'll see that behavior increase in intensity assuming that the dog is learning that the more intensely, or "better" they do this behavior, the sooner they get what they want. If that makes sense.

Thanks for watching my channel. Dog should step up to leadership position once you are not able. If you’re entering a dangerous area, you should give dog alert command. That way dog is ready to go, and there are no surprises.

If a dog is biting the handler, the relationship is not aligned properly. More work needs to be done on the non-learning “relationship” corner stone. Motivators, bite work should only commence once the relationship is solid, once that dog is perceiving things correctly then you start that kind of work/training….

I have a question regarding Malinois handler redirection: I heard from two other trainers on RUclips said that beside the high driven issue, dogs can redirect at handler out of frustration. As in training, even when they calm down, they get reward to go get that bite exercise. In real life situation on job, when the schedule is busy, they don’t get those reward bite exercise often or at all for days. One of the trainer specifically said that Malinois is prone to this frustration handler redirect biting. He said himself preferring German Shepherd for this reason, implying German Shepherd nervous system is more stable to control frustration, a genetic matter. So do you see extinction of handler redirection with out of drive training for Malinois, when Malinois is deprived of reward biting exercise? Or the risk is always there?

Hello, Hans! Regarding your certification you spoke of, will you be posting videos of your testing process? I’d be interested to see you evaluate and critique the dogs. I briefly got involved in Schutzhund back in the 90s/early 2000s but it wasn’t something I pursued. I really just valued a good personal protection dog as I still do. I have seen many of your videos and really enjoy them. I’m always trying to learn something new. Thank you and God bless!
