Boil Test & Performance: Goshawk Era 2 Alcohol Stove Review
G O S H A W K E R A 2 T E S T - When I first got my hands on the Gohawk Era 1, I was blown away by the design and craftsmanship of this alcohol stove. The R&D and well thought out design to make it an incredible spirit burner and maybe the fastest alcohol stove on the planet. Now the people at Goshawk have updated the Goshawk Era 1 and launched the Goshawk Era 2. I had to put it to the test and what better way to do that is with a good old stove battle. Lets see if the improved design is better that the original vortex rapid boiler Goshawk Era 1.

Different sized pots on the boil test? Invalid test then.
@@ruairidhalexander7631 same size pots and same size circumstance at the base and same material.
what 'precisely' are you using for fuel?
I bought the Era 1 - & regret it. I’ve never used it despite it costing a lot more than the competition and took forever to arrive in UK. No lid, no simmer facility, no ability to store unused fuel. It just languishes in my box of dumb purchases. I won’t waste any more money on Goshawk products.
Martin , with the whiskey you should try make a Irish Coffee , they are well nice when out camping in the colder weather !
@@martinmoylan339 I actually never that of that. I will toast your name when I do one. Cheers man.
@soletrail cool , you will need a little container of cream to top it off 😋
I have a couple of Goshawk stoves and they are very nice and cool. I might get one of those, like you I have a thing for stoves.
@@oxxnarrdflame8865 cheers for the comment. Yeah it's a cave man thing. Me man make fire kind of feeling 🤣 So happy Goshawk are focusing their engineering in alcohol stoves. Beautifully crafted products
I’ll be interested in a boil test with the Firemaple pot. I have one and mine did not perform well with the moon lander titanium alcohol stove. A standard pot worked better.
Nothing to turn it off when done cooking, Trangia made it better!
@@thewunderhase I hear you. The newer version I just loaded up has something. It has a simmer plate and stand.
Im close to getting a few mates together and holding an intervention for your stove addiction!😂😂😂😂 I love your comparison videos Martin. Brilliant again. Super wee stove
🤣🤣 I need it. It will be something else then like scarfs or cups.. I need a fetish in my life 🤣
I'm not sure I'll ever buy an alcohol stove but I still enjoy these vids. Your enthusiasm is infectious. Good work.
Appreciate that 😊 I have issues but I love my stoves. Thanks for the comment
The groves makes the alcohol to creap up higher thus get vaporized faster due the warmer area of the stove, put some alcohol in a glass and look at the inner side/rim how fluid creeps up.If it burns better it uses more fules in the same amount of time. You get the same flickering using if the wick is up too much in a lantern, i dont know what it is called. It gives out way too much fuel.
Brilliant info. Appreciate that.
Nice,,but too pricey for me..maybe when i save up..🫡
I hear you. The level of work that has gone into the product is unreal I must admit.
Would be interesting to see for how long they would both run with the simmer ring on. Are you still planing on making the packing video before a trip? would be awesome (maybe I missed it).
Good idea. I may do that. Thanks for the idea. And yes, doing a full packing video and how I got my packing down to 2 hours and no stress.
I'm reluctant to buy from Goshawk again. Bought the Swirling Flame OP-100 last year and discovered a serious safety issue, where the alcohol could overflow as the stove heated up. Contacted them, assuming a one off manufacturing error but the replacement they sent did the exact same thing. I notified them again and provided videos but they went silent. Good looking gear but not trustworthy. 😢
O really. I actually have that stove. Haven't used it much. I'll check it out.
Yeah the OP 100 can get hot and boil like a mofo I use it but only fill it half way for quick boils for tea 🫖 mostly
Very technical Martin, excellent review.
Appreciate that Leonard. Thank you. 🙌
Another nice informative video. Stoves are like hats, you can never have too many.😁
🤣 you should get that saying in a t shirt
Great review mate! Really enjoyed that one. Stove looks like a stunning and clean design. Thank you for that mate! Really appreciate the honesty. Looking forward to the next.
Appreciate that man. Thank you. It's a very cool stove. So well designed. I'm so sad but it's beautiful to look at 🤣
Getting close to pulling the trigger on ordering. Likely get hammered on import taxes etc....
That's the only downside. Very cool design thou.
I thought you would lock the snuff down under the simmer ring… Anyhow love mine and never store fuel in it, just burn it dry 🔥
Great idea. Might try that thanks. When out camping I like to try to store fuel anyways. Just to save it for the next boil.
Looks like I'll be getting another stove now
Great review Martin. I have fallen in love with Goshawk stoves. I have 2 of the Ver1 Era and 1 of the Ver2, along with the AZ-1 stands for each. I'm glad that you mentioned the difference in the vortex pattern as I wondered if it was just my imagination. My testing gave the same results with the Era Ver 2 having a shorter burn time, but faster boil times. This is a rock-solid burner set made for serious business. There's not much you could do to hurt it. The engineering is beautiful and the AZ-1 addition was a stroke of genius. You taught me something with the trick to hold the snuffer down for temporary fuel storage. Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant presentation man! Overall presentation and your professional explanation are flawless! Absolutely flawless! 👏👏
Nice one Martin, you can see the efficiency of the new version in the flames colour, a blue/purple flame burners hotter than yellow/red flame like your gas hob at home, and that's where the new version is more efficient than the older one, you can see the size of the blue flames difference between the two stoves in the video at 04:46 for example, you can really notice the difference between the blue flames (if all that makes sense as it does in my head!) Also, you DO have an issue with stoves, I'm always here to listen 😂😂
Great video Martin, love your stoves.❤❤
Lanshan 1 I bought from Collinsoutdoors comes with a metal hook (for the door) and I'm worried that the official plastic hook will break one day.
These mishaps and field repairs add character to your gear. Every repair is a memory and makes them yours. Great Vid, I followed 👍
@@Vauxhall1434 appreciate that and yes fully agree 🤙
Lough Mohra!!
Thanks for the window style of laces.
Great job Martin.
So, just out of interest, this or your Lanshan 1? ✌️
@@mokotramp That is a tough one. So they are very different tents. That one tough decision. So for pitching the Vango. Lanshan take lot longer. I really don't know. Think that's why I have them both 🤣
@@soletrailExactly what I thought you'd say! 😂 So you reckon the Vango would be a lot easier to pitch on more difficult terrain? I love my Lanshan too, but as you know it's pretty sensitive to pitch! 😑
Thanks for sharing this - looked at the 2P briefly and figured after my experience with the NL2 it would be flawed. I'm a fan of some of the Vango range (love my trusty Mirage 200) but this isn't one of them for me. I think the new Nexus would be a much stronger design.
No, you are grand! I’ll stick with my Osprey Kestrel 48. good review though!
I like your video. I hike in France a lot (via Easyjet) and I'm looking for a foldable rucksack so that all of my gear can be taken inside the plane. I really dislike having to pay extra to put it in the hold. I'm thinking that your video has given me a solution? And 45L sounds great to me. My bag is 50L and its just too big and floppy for me. So my question is, if taken apart again, is it then small enough to avoid going in the hold?
@@RegEdmunds howdie.. it all depends.. if your bag is full how will you fold it up? It's simple to take the frame off and leave everything else attached. It's a great option I must say.
@@soletrail Sorry , I didn't explain well. Until now, I dismantle my plastic rucksack frame, fold my rucksack fabric in half, and then push it into my Easyjet bag (£9.99 from Amazon) which is the correct size to take it inside the plane. The rest of the space is used for my tent, mattress, hiking sticks, pillow, and everything else I can squeeze in. The rest of the stuff I wear. When I arrive at my destination I find a quiet location and reassemble everything. So as an example, last August I hiked from Geneva Airport to Lyon Airport, and when I arrived there, I repeated the reverse procedure to get home again.
@@RegEdmunds great idea. I feel the bag would work for you. It's ideal you can take apart the frame. Keep me posted on how you get on.
Hi Martin, just wondering where you buy your durston gear from? And did you have to pay fees after you bought it? Many thanks
Howdie.. so Dan actually sent me that one so and when I bought the X-mid he worked out a deal with me as I would be showing it on the channel. But yes it's not shipped from this side of the pond. Maybe in time they would. It's a seriously brilliant bag. So well built. What size would you go for?
Do you have any experience with the Lowa Ranger III and can you compare the two boots? Stiffness and durability? I've been very happy with my Rangers and am now considering the Ticam Evo.
Great set up, although the pot looks a bit too high above the flame, which makes sense why it took longer to boil.
Very true. If it had a wider burn area it would be better. But I was going for the lightest possible set up. Thanks for the comment 😊
Watched Jasons video, came and watched yours & subscribed. Then you talk of Lex, and i’d have subscribed 100 times more if I could. I feel you there man. We currently have 5 dogs (4 1/2 westies!) from 15 1/2 yrs, to 5yrs to 3 siblings aged 2. We lost 3 dogs within 4 months before we got our 5yr old. Was horrendous - all old aged (15 - 17 yrs, x2 rescued at 13yrs). Nothing prepares you for the loss of a soul dog though. Our 5yr old is another soul dog, never thought we’d be blessed with a second. Her four puppies were born with ‘issues’, our friend has one, we kept 3. Little monsters the three of them 😂❤ love them to bits. Any man that loves his dogs as you do is a good heart in my book. Here’s to many more trails with Lex ‘clipped on’. Ps did your phone work??
Aw thank you so much for taking the time to comment. Appreciate it. And 5 dogs. Wow.. well done you. There is something about rescue dogs that melts my heart. Freya had a very tough life before I got got her.. I had to sleep on a blow up bed for 2 weeks with her until she settled. She's a beauty and I feel she knows she's safe now. As for lex. Honestly there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of her. I had her for 18 years. She was up every mountain in Ireland with me. Such a lovely soul.. hardest day of my life being nosey to nose with her at the end. But true love make you take the pain for her at the end. You might enjoy this.. on the anniversary of lex passing I made a video for the animal welfare to help them. And in the video you can see when I 1st met Freya. Her name was Nicky then. ruclips.net/video/oysNM83f9R0/видео.htmlsi=4qOEmoSmftx2TsXh
@ thank you, i’ll go and watch it now. My partner is a vet and two of our rescues belonged to elderly clients who could no longer care for them. The westie lived with an elderly lady in a flat who couldn’t get her up & down to go out to pee. The other lass was a corgi x lab. Most beautiful gentle eyes and lips. Her owner developed Alzheimer’s and had to suddenly go into care. She was an absolute sweetheart. It is the trust they find, the relief in knowing they’re safe now - going to be fed. Rosie went into the garden every night to holler, letting everyone in the neighbourhood know she now had her very own garden. After 13 years in a flat. Would never have kept three, but one had serious issues and had x3 surgeries before she was 3 weeks old. Shes coping very well now. One has a leg issue which will need surgery and is ‘on the spectrum’ - bloody adore him. The last one has a wonky tail but gorgeous lol.
At least you only ever have to assemble it the once 👌 This is based on the Qidian Pro frameless pack they've had out for a while. I bought one during the summer and it came rolled in a bag! I still haven't had it out but wish now I'd waited for this version and paid a wee bit extra to get the air venting....
The Qidian Pro is pretty good, had one a few years now and I consider it a modern version of the old Bundeswehr Flectarn ruck. Had one of those but sold it, wasn't a bad bag either.
@@niallharran very true. In saying that. Once it's together you easily take the frame apart and store it away. Build quality is very good.
Each person has to Cary their own kit !!!!
Interesting video martin, not in market for a pack but your vidros always good 👍
@@michaelhanly8575 thank you Sir.
Very Nice. Where did the rectangular piece go from the start of the video? Looks a bit complicated first off but then when you were half way there, it went together handy enough. Instructions would be handy though, with diagrams off course. Enjoy the new pack Martin. Looking forward to seeing it in action...
@@alanhamilton890 well man. If you look at the video 4.30min you can see it on the bag before the waist strap goes on. I should have shown that more clearly. 🤙 Yeah it's an easy enough process but some step by steps should be there. I'm sure they will add them. It's a brand new product.
Shit happens and usually happens in multiples. Nae luck. Id have lost it on camera. You were a lot better than I'd be. Also a win on the mat. Trick for the coffee is to put it in the bottom of the cup. Pour over the boiling water and steep it. The grounds will sink and can be quickened up with a couple of drops of cold. That is the way they drink it in the Baltics... As Im not as fit as before and carrying injuries, family got me a garmin messenger. That way Im not bothered about phone connections. Ive had phones stop working in Wicklow winters. It can send a pre written message to say all is well or give out an sos. Fire pits really do my head in. Not exactly LNT and they are often slap bang in the middle of a nice flat pitch.
Cheers for the coffee tip. I will be using that one. It was a bit of a shit show of a night but I really didn't leave it get to me. It was Jason's night as well and didn't wanna bring the atmosphere down. I cried when I was alone 🤣 you won't believe this but I have never been to Wicklow. Planning to head there soon. Looking forward to it.
I bought the YUE 45 (similar self build process) and really like it.
I thought you would of sticking the spikes of the poles into the ground and really tied in the guide lines to them . Just a thought
Yep that would be the plan. I may tie a wee loop on the pole area so it will hold the pole handle. I do have a solution for the center beam. Will have it out soon and will highlight at add ons I did. But your idea makes way more sense. See.. All Martins have the best ideas 😉
@soletrail Great stuff , I'm interested to see this solution. But as we both know "it shouldn't be slipping or moving like that " . I will have a think myself, I'm usually fairly good a problem solving !
Great video. What drone are you using? I'm looking at a few atm and can't decide.
@@martinmoylan339 howdie. That's the DJI mini 2. Still a very good drone. Does everything I need. Great entry level. All depends on what you wanna use it for.
@soletrail cool , yes I heard it's a descent drone , mainly for photography (landscape ) I'm looking at the 4k pro combo pack , waiting for it to go down in price 😀
very interesting can't wait to see what your opinions are once you've used it out on a few trips
As always brilliantly put together man! It would be interesting to see the quality after, say, 2 or 3 months of intensive use.
