The Trangia spirit burner is one of the most reliable solidly built alcohol stoves. Many companies have copied its unique design. Today, I compare a copycat Trangia stove with the original using several different Stove Tests

Hi Martin. Loving your videos. I'm in the middle of your hiking with your dog one, and your life interruptions. I feel for you buddy, been there. Hopefully, you're getting back on track now.
I'm in Kent, but my great grandfather was born and raised in Clonmel, so I always feel happy when I hear the beautiful Irish accent. I must come over for a visit some time. Keep your chin up, hopefully it'll all work out for you. I hope your Dad is all good now.
      Cheers buddy.

Thanks for the kind words. Yep things are settling and starting to see some good traction. What a horrible position to be in. It's a weird feeling. Think it's more of a sense of purpose thank anything else but getting there. Appreciate the kind words Andy.

Excellent comparison video. I am a longtime user of the Trangia, who has recently tried one of the 'Knockoffs' and have to say I agree entirely with your findings in all respects. One possible reason for the alternating jet sizes could be to avoid patent infringement problems. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this video. 4:45 - A detail that 99% of Trangia YT reviews miss is that Trangia has *an internal fabric wick* made from Linen, this makes the prime (bloom) quick, in the “knock off” they do not use this wick to save money a few cents.
    * You can see this wick - a tube that sleeve around the inner wall; in the stove exploded view in Trangia page, or in Iram Cook videos.

I haven't found a clone that matches the Trangia burner. However, I buy the clones for the simmer rings. The wee handle on the simmer ring is better than trangias.
I must admit to using the speedster style alcohol stoves more recently. Lighter and works ok.
Oh, was on the Trangia website and they are selling spare rings for the triangle - just right to use as a pot stand for the triangle. Got one.

    • @soletrail
      @soletrail  3 месяца назад +3

Well Pal. I agree I do like the handle. Just got me thinking, would the knock-off simmer cap fit the Trangia... Hummm. Done another Rabbit of curiosity 😂
I have never tried the speedster. Any good?
I have recorded a review of the Lixada titanium stove that is a knock-off of the toaks siphon stove. Put it up against the Trangia so busy editing that. Any stove test suggestions through them my way. 👍

    • @BrokenBackMountains
      @BrokenBackMountains 3 месяца назад +1

@@soletrail It does fit the Trangia. That is the only reason I buy th knock offs.
The speedster is a bit different. Unlike Trangia, the don't like wind. They don't have burner holes either. However they don't spill when knocked. Basically atin with carbon felt. I use one of his stands with a titanium pot. Really lightweight but only for boiling water. If I was cooking it would be my Trangia 27.
I like Trangia and the only one I don't have is the 25.

I have a couple of Alocs (Trangia knock off) stoves.
They really are excellent, bloom time around 30 seconds, boil time very similar to your Trangia times, and total burn times very similar too
Maybe not all knock offs are created the same.

Hey Ivan. Thanks for the comment. Yeah my keep a look out for a few other brands and see if I can my hands on some for more tests. I do like the bail handle on the summer plate if the knock offs.

I have both, I bought the knock off when I was starting out thinking that I was saving money. Later I decided to invest in the Trangia for not much more than the cost of the knock off. Since then the Trangia has been with me and the knock off is left at home in a box.
You can feel the quality of the Trangia. Loved the video Martin, looking forward to the next one 👍👍

Class mate, so glad that was the result! I got a knock off one from alpkit last year and hate it! I suspect the big difference in priming might be to do with the internals. I think the Trangia has a wick inside but the others don’t.

I must say, I enjoy these comparison videos. I had a knock-off but gave it to my brother when I got my trangia set. The Stainless steel winning the boil test previously blew my mind a bit. If it's not broke...

Much appreciated. Yeah I honestly spend way too much time out my garden doing burn tests. I even burn my coffee in the morning on a spirit stove 😂 my wife says I'm weird 😅.
The the stainless steel stove video shocked me. Someone did point out that maybe try to have the heat exchange pot as low as the other pots... Might be worth trying. I honestly thought it would win hands down. Off camera I actually burnt up the Stanley twice cause I thought I got the time wrong. Nope 😂

I have the Trangia Original and it does what it is supposed to do.
Weight, Bloom Time, Boil Time and Burn Duration .. even if a knockoff were able to better the Trangia in all aspects thereof, I do not see the difference / improvement being that radical to cause me to replace my Burner.
    And .. it's paid for.

I love my trangia but do wish it had the bale handle, as I did the trangi one difficult to adjust once it's on the burner, I think it's too tight. Otherwise, trangia all the way. Last a lifetime those things and the fact they make no noise, are much more peaceful to cook with when out in the wild.

The knock off ones pots are more easily damaged and they do t have a standard size so if you have a few different types with a hillwalking group or scout group after a few years you have a mismatching pile of junk. Better off sticking with the original also some kits don’t come with the kettle. Great Bit of kit easy to use and get fuel.

  • @richardhenry1969

Ill tell ya a thing we use. Take i piece of thick fold i use to set my stove on. I put a little fuel on the foil. It heats the stove up as it burns off.
I also wonder if that fuel you guys use doesn't get as hot as real denatured alcohol?
Seems like every time i watch a uk video the times are 2min. Different. I never see anyone using denatured alcohol in the UK.

    Meaningless numbers, but:
Knock-off time to boil - after the bloom: 6:55s
Trangia time to boil - after the bloom: 6:49s
Knock-off burn time - after the bloom: 11:52s*
Knock-off burn time - after the bloom: 11:46s
    * If use a prime pan under the knock-off will bloom in ~1 minute (tested by Paleo HickerMD), an so have a better burn time than Trangia = better fuel efficiency.

I would suggest not to buy a knock-off. The original is so cheap anyway, we should support the original inventor. Because if trangia shuts down business, then all we'll have left are low-quality knock-offs without alternatives. Buying knock-offs makes sense when the cost is drastically different or the quality is the same. But with the Trangia, I would be sad to see them go because of a few bucks.
