Hello, and welcome to the Aritone channel! If you are into tone chasing, shootouts, modding, deep dives and fun experiments, I think you'll enjoy the contents here! I feature guitar related content covering everything from the broad topic of guitars, pedals, amps, to all the in between details like tubes, op amps, transistors and diodes. While I try to keep everything relatively easy to understand and not too technical, there is also the occasional deep dive shootout and in depth circuit analysis.
I hope you enjoy the videos, and please share your thoughts in the comments!

4558 Op Amp Shootout ruclips.net/video/n30-hlBKAYE/видео.html
I personally have a soft spot in my heart for Guyatone pedals. While they never achieved the sales or recognition like Boss or Ibanez pedals, they had their own thing going, often with unique and sometimes quirky circuit designs.
Today we are taking a look at one of their earlier pedals, the PS-001 Distortion. It definitely does not sound like other "famous" distortions and has a unique tone going from crunch overdrive to fuzz-like distortion.
I plan to trace the circuit and do a schematic analysis video in the future, so please look out for that video as well!

The Guyatone/Nady TO-2 is a rare and special pedal in that it is a "real" tube pedal running the plates at a voltage of 184 volts! So, in order to make this pedal in to a "true" tube overdrive, I removed the diodes from the circuit, and modded the pedal so that it ...

What’s a better op amp for an overdrive pedal?
Thanks for watching! There really is no "better" for overdrives, just whatever you think sounds good. I have a video comparing 14 different op amps if you're interested, link is in the description for this video.
Sounds good nice and juicy! Well done. ✝️🎸
Thanks for watching! Great to hear you liked the tones from this pedal!
Awesome video. I love to see unknown pedals like this.
Thanks for watching! Great to hear you enjoyed the video, thanks for the kind words!
I actually really liked the Air Con chip.
Thanks! I'm trying to build a fan following for this chip! ;) Check out my RAT op amp shootout, this chip really sounds awesome in a hard distortion/fuzz circuit!
Listening with headphones, the gloss surface chip has a more mid-focused EQ and was my favorite. With laptop speakers they all sounded the same!
Thanks for watching! And thank you for sharing your listening impressions!

Thanks for the demos and comparisons. I appreciate the work you put into editing. It was especially nice to hear the difference that the Brilliance adjustments made. I liked the video.

I happen to own one of these that I got solely because of the aesthetics, but genuinely feel in love with it sounds
Thanks for watching! Yes, the Guyatone pedals have a really cool look to them, with the fonts and color choices! And yes, this pedal sounds great!
When you parked the brilliance control all the way to minimum and the sound became very full-range, it immediately sounded like the Electro-Harmonix Hot Tubes pedal with the tone control switched out of circuit. (The EHX HT has a tone control in-out switch) 👍
Thanks for watching! I've never tried the EHX Hot Tubes, but yes, as you've noticed with the brilliance all the way down it sounds very full range super fat!
how to make an overdrive more tight? where we can change some capacitor value or resistor value usually?
Thanks for watching! It depends on your image of "tight," but if you want to adjust the low end response, check out Episode #2 of this series!
Excellent comparison. Thank you for your efforts. I recently bought a GE-10 and I’m very happy with it.
Thanks for watching! And thank you for your kind comments! Great to hear you enjoyed the video, and congrats on your GE10 purchase!

Thanks for watching! And thank you so much for the kind words, I really appreciate it! Great to hear the video was of some help!
My guess is, if you play music through it, it probably mixes the L&R out of phase to lose the vocals. A lot of Japanese tech was built around creating karaoke back in the late 70s and early 80s to do just this. Feed a sine wave into the line inputs in phase and see what you get at each output at the rear.
Hi, thank you for offering your thoughts and suggestions! I went back and tried it, quick answer is, nothing changed. Played: a sine wave, a mono jazz recording, and a regular stereo song. Tried both the rear line in, and the front aux input. Also tried both the line out and rec out, but unfortunately, they all came out unaffected. Thanks for the cool suggestion though!
I would love to make a pedal with a small reverb tank like that. Nice find!
Hi, thanks for watching! Yes, I'm definitely toying with the idea of making this into some type of pedal when I find the time.
I guess it was to record yourself on tape on top of music pre-recorded, like karaoke but at home For the guitar I think it was thought for acoustics. The reverb also points in that direction.
Hi Phil! Thanks for watching! Yes, it would make sense to plug in an acoustic guitar that has a pickup, since you wouldn't need a cab/amp simulator. Would love to hear from someone who actually used one of these.
What cool find. I hope you can find some more info on the intended use cases. That little spring tank is adorable! Have you thought about turning that into a pedal?
Hi Justin! Thanks for watching! That thing is so cute, isn't it!? I definitely want to convert it into something smaller like a pedal, not sure how easy it'd be though ;)
Well, the Thechnics SH3035 might in my opinion be a little bit lame, but however, 15 year old me 1982, Technics was the cream de la cream. I would love you to tweak this old gear with an Arito touch 😀
Hi Patrik! Thanks for always tuning in! Yes, Technics was one of those brands we dreamed of as a kid. I definitely want to do something fun with this!
Your videos are never a waste of time.

Thank for this shootout The current version is the one used in maxon pedals? Since what year ? It seems too best quality in terms of transperancy and still sweet breakup
Thanks for watching! As far as I know, the current version JRC4558 is used in Maxon OD-9s and Ibanez TS-9s being sold today, but I have heard that some reissues in the past had different op amps.
Thanks for the video this is super helpful. most of the time most people want the crunchy hi-gain sound but it would be nice to have the option to get a more splatty, nasty sound as well!
Thanks for watching! And thank you so much for the kind compliments! I really appreciate it! Yes, hearing how the cold clipper affects lower gain overdrive was really interesting.
where can I find the original opa2604ap.
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately, the 2604 has been discontinued for a while now, and there have been many reports of fakes popping up on Ebay and the likes. I really don't know how what your best option would be.
What is the difference between connecting the diodes to Vb and not to ground?
I don't think it changes the sound much, but it does mean you don't have to use decoupling capacitors between the opamp stages and you can bias them together instead of independently. So It saves you two caps and a resistor.
Thanks for watching! The simple answer is; if you connect it to ground, you won't get a useable signal out of the pedal. Without getting too technical, Vb is a DC bias voltage that is used as a "virtual ground" while the signal travels through the two op amp stages. As the viewer above has touched upon, unless you decouple the signal and bring it back to "true ground," you want the signal/circuit to reference Vb as if it were ground. I talk a little about virtual ground in my "Breadboard Overdrive Build Part 3" video around the 32min 43sec mark. Hope this helps!
Heya heya, love the videos you've done on this pedal! I just purchased one and am curious if I need a step down transformer to run it in the states!? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate your kind words! I'm not 100% sure, but if it's "Guyatone" branded, you need a step down transformer. If it's a Nady or Westbury, you should be fine. The required voltage should be labeled somewhere on the pedal. Hope this helps!
What stepdown transformer would you recommend to use with this pedal??
@@TanekHeath It doesn't draw that much current, so you'll be fine with almost any transformer. I'm not familiar with any specific make/model since I live in Japan and don't need one. Hope this helps!
@@arito Nice I'm thinking of picking this up soon. this pedal IS just the TD-1 with a bass and treble knob right?
@@TanekHeath Not quite, but they're very close. I talk briefly about their differences in the video, but I've never owned a TD-1 so it's all based on information I've gathered.
I saw the video title and thought meh, but upon listening they do all sound a little different to each other.
Thanks for watching! And thank you for sharing your impression on the tones! I hope you enjoyed this deep dive comparison :)
The TL072 and CA3260 seemed to have the best note definition to my ear. Thank you for doing what you do!
Thanks for watching! And thank you for the kind words! Great to hear you enjoy these videos! Thank you for sharing your impressions, yes, the CA3260 in particular seems to have a nice clarity to the notes.
They all sound exactly the same. You can try chips that aren't even op amps, as well. All they do is amplify the signal. Any chip can do that, which is why there's basically zero difference when you swap that chip for something else. They amplify. They don't tone shape.
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed the video!
They sounded the same? I am usually thinking there's no magic op-amp and I do not like cork sniffery and the way the marketing hype affects prices, but all these chips sounded a little different to each other. I was quite surprised.
Op amps don't contribute to tone lol. All they do is amplify the signal. Most people wrongly believe otherwise, though. Go watch Visual Sound's, aka the people that make the 1Spot, vid on this. It's called OP amp myths or something. Look up "visual sound op amp myths" and it'll come up. They took a group of musicians, producers, etc... And had them all listen as they swapped op amps in a Tube Screamer and asked whether people heard a difference. They heard the slightest of slight differences. That's it. Sometimes the difference was imperceptible.
Though I have scathing rants about this chip and it's many series, I will also admit it has a fairly obvious change in how a circuit works. The midrange hump and "ratty" texture to the gain is significant in many circuits. *The peak resonant bandwidth some give often delivers tha "wah-like" swing from the peak resonant frequencies people want a TS specifically for.* When all is said and done, most pedal builders don't have the knowledge to accomplish the traits they desire based on circuit architecture of their own rather than cheap and somewhat simple hacks and mods. *I also think when all is said and done, the TS family is based around this series of chip and it's critical for the TS's all around characteristics that are sought after.* I remember 20 years ago, *I built a notch filter to scoop the mids out of my TS, lol!* It actually still sounded great after the fact and yet the mid presence was still dominant lol.
Thanks for watching!
It's not critical. Visual Sound replaced it with a chip that wasn't even an op amp and the difference was imperceptible. So minute that you couldn't tell a difference in a blind test.
@@J.C... I used to think that way after having installed solder tails into many devices, but eventually over the range of a device's variable operating specs it becomes obvious. I only use my own original circuit I call the Death Screamer Overdrive for what it drives many amps and pedals into, and once in a while I'll notice something is wrong with it, start inspecting it's now catastrophe of insides from 50 different modifications, and typically when this happens, I'll suddenly notice I forgot to switch the chips in it back to "stock". If a 4558 of any series is in it, I know for certain just from hearing. Things get far more extreme as well as obvious as you graduate up the ladder in engineering with experience aside from grander knowledge.

Do youknowoffhand ifthe guystone TD-1 also has the high plate voltage you explained in this video? Also if it does, what is tge diff between the two units- that being the TO-2 and the TD-1.. Thanjs….
Thanks for watching! I'm guessing you skipped through the intro part of the video, but I briefly talk about the TD-1 around the 1:50 mark.
thanks so much sorry about that. I did go back and listen…. Love your stuff.
@@nunziosignore5264 No worries! Thanks for your kind compliments! I've never owned a TD-1 so my knowledge is very limited, but I hoped that helped!
Love this channel!!!
Thanks so much!!! I really appreciate your kind comments!!
Sup man, I did exactly what you did in the video but my output signal is too low, I need to crank the volume on my amp to hear and with that comes a lot of white noise, do you know what could possibly be? (I used regular pots instead of trim pots and they are working as expected)
Thanks for watching! It's hard to tell, but I would start by carefully triple checking all the connections. I'm sure you've already done so, but a lot of times it's the most simple overlooked connection that causes problems. Next check resistor values as it's easy to get the color codes wrong. Otherwise, I would suspect a bad capacitor. And if all those seem fine, it could possibly be a bad op amp. Hope this helps!
I always enjoy these shootout videos. Thank you for taking the time to make them for us!

@@ArrakisOCE Thank you! That is so great to hear that you enjoy my videos, I hope they are of some help to you! This one in particular was a lot of work, collecting all the op amps, but that was also part of the fun :)
I can say they all are definitely 4558's with subtle but sometimes obvious differences. *The 4558 is ultimately a bit trashy sounding, has a strong mid presence and the nature of those two traits is why people love them and desire particular ones.* From an engineering standpoint though, it's less than a trivial detail. I prefer the cleanest and most even fidelity possible and then contour it with my filtering and clipping schemes. When all is said and done, you can pull a bandpass filter off the circuit into a diode scheme and achieve literally everything people favor this chip for but it can be done with any chip and done better. If you wanted, you could pull a dozen filters off the output with unique clipping schemes for each bandwidth lol. *In the grand scheme, if you can design and know the science behind designing, this chip's infamy is ultimately mythology.* *It's legend only holds water with people limited to simple mods and chip changes as opposed to knowing the science to simply engineer exactly what they want.* I see so many boutique companies selling their spin on the Tube Screamer I honestly wonder why they even went into business. Produce that same characteristics with better science to do it.
4558 is just a jelly bean opamp tho. It's not even specified for audio. However, guitar world is such a total opposite of Human evolution which whom tend to find a way to improve everything by nature. I mean just look at the latest T.I's or Analog Devices opamps catalogue, today's opamp design tend to avoid distortion (measure in T.H.D) at all cost!
