Hello, I'm Charlotte, I'm English but I live in Bali, welcome to my channel where I talk about books! 😁📚
My favourite things to read are profound personal narratives that probe into what it means to be human, and the struggles and sacrifices that give us meaning. Additionally, I'm always trying to read more translated fiction, and I am partial to supporting indie publishers along the way.

Wonderful prompts Charlotte!! I am really not reading much but I will try and read the group read if I can plus I still have Juja to read ❤🤞❤️
I'm really behind on reading a Jhumpa Lahiri book I think! So excited for the next Shafak!
For WIT month I am considering "The Details" by Ia Genberg since I did not read that during the International Booker prize season. I love Swedish folk music, so I think I have a tie-in to at least one prompt.
Good to hear! I've also sent you the WIT bookclub link on Kofi if you would like to join 😁
@@charlottemolloy I have requested "Iza's Ballad" from my local library.
fantastic! this will be my 3rd year taking part. your picks sound superb. I'm currently reading The Tale of Genji so I'll go with the same for that prompt so that I can finally finish it.
Is this Natalie of Curious Reader passing on the baton? I thought she hosted it in past years with another person... I always try to get one in!
Sorry Margaret, I've never heard of her! No, this came about from me watching Matthew Sciarappa and Jen from Insert Literary Pun Here doing WIT related readings and events for several years up until last year when there was a noticeable void in the WIT event on Booktube. This is me picking up the baton independently. I hope you have a great WIT month! You can find the templates I created on my Instagram page! 💓
@@charlottemolloy oh right, those are the co-hosts-were the cohosts, I guess. ☺️ happy you’re filling in!
Love to read WIT. I have Butter by Asako Yazuki translated by Polly Barton on my TBR, I'll read that one as a nod to your Readathon. I'm waiting to see what's on the Booker longlist before I commit to more. Happy Reading.
Hey Kim! Yes I have the same game plan as you, see what's on the Booker and then pair up or down my WIT tbr!!
Very happy to see this video as I had decided to join in reading for WIT month. Love the prompts! Thanks for hosting.
I'm so glad! Thank you! Templates are saved on my insta if you'd like them!
@@charlottemolloy I got them, thank you 😃
There are five books I’d like to read for WIT and I think they cover most of the prompts which is lucky! Three are from countries I’ve never traveled to and four are not from my continent. I have a short story collection, two classics, a debut, I think one is magical realism, three have won awards and one is a genre I don’t normally read. The only prompts I don’t have are the book to movie one and the group read as I’ve read, and loved, Iza’s Ballad already. I’ve wanted to read Moonbath for a while so I hope you like it Charlotte! Thanks for encouraging people to read more Women in Translation!
Glad to see the prompts will really work for you Jo! I also haven't got a book to movie one but really looking forward to reading Iza's Ballad for the first time!
The "Izsa Ballad" is a very strong story and maid me think about parents in a different way. the point of view of the mother was very key for me and gave me a whole new prospective. Can not wait for more WIT videos from you.
Ooo curious review! I hope I like Izas Ballad! 🤞🏻
the izsa ballad book has a really striking cover⚛
I thought so too!!
I desperately want Ours to be on the list it's so good!
You are the first person I've heard that's read it! So I'm excited to know its really good!
Maybe you’re not being recommended via the algorithm lately, as I have not seen a CHAROLETTE video in ages , but 🎉 for this one! 📖 🪱 💚
Yes the algorithm thing wouldn't surprise me because view counts are down... Who knows why! 😭 Lovely to see you back in the comments section though! 💚
Finally catching up with people’s predictions and hahaha this is such an unhinged way to do them. Love it! 👏
I do enjoy this tag, thanks for sharing! Still need to read Small Pleasures, as I want to know what all the fuss is about with the ending. And while I have seen raves for the Boyne series, I struggle to be enthusiastic about picking his work up because of the ‘LGB-without-the-T’ thing he has going on.
Thanks Ben! 🥰 Having never heard this about John Boyne before I went ahead and googled it, all I can find on this is an interview of him by the Independent where, I quote: "As a gay man, I stand 100 per cent behind all trans people. I respect them as brave pioneers, I applaud their determination to live authentic lives despite the abuse they also receive, and I will always do so.” I don't know where you got your information from, I can't find anything from a quick Google search, but I'm happy to be proven wrong!! 😁
@@charlottemolloy he’s been crowing support for Rowling and for the Cass Report on Twitter quite a lot. It’s a shame. (No impact on my views of anyone else’s reading btw, it just makes me not particularly hyped about reading his stuff myself. There are too many other books out there for me to spend my time feeling conflicted!)
Wellness is fantastic!
judging by your description no one subject to depressive episodes should risk even dipping into the john boyne series. But I really liked nathan hill's earlier book the nix and after your review am very interested in the new one.⚛😀❤
I would agree with your assessment on the Boyne series, Frank.
I'm going to read Blue Ruin after watching this. Thanks
Hope you enjoy it! 😁
Thank you Charlotte. I do like the freakout.
Big fan of Kunzru. White Tears is one of my favorite novels. Blue Ruin was right up my alley too. The only 2024 releases I've enjoyed more are Percival Everett's James, Kevin Barry's The Heart in Winter, and Carys Davies' Clear. About to finish Liz Moore's The God of the Woods, a perfect summer read for suspense/drama or mystery/thriller fans. Looking forward to The Empusium.
White tears is the next one I have to get to by Kunzru. I also throughly enjoyed Clear this year, it just didn't quite fit into any of the questions on this tag today.
There was a film made of The Namesake, but I don’t know if it’s any good. Loved the book ❤
I'll check out the movie! 😁
@@charlottemolloyThe movies is as good as the the book ❤ With director as Mira Nairs other is simply not possible!
I am so so happy about “Namesake”! I adore Jumpa Lagori ❤ As for Sanjeev Sahota - so surprised, as I loved the “Year of runaways” 😢
@@mary_yankulova yes I was also a bit shocked by my reading experience of The Spoiled Heart. Will be interested to hear how other people feel about it.
I’d never even heard of the John Boyne quartet, not sure if it’s for me but it does sound interesting. Got to have some read by whim reading in there but I’m looking forward to your plans for WIT in August Charlotte!
Thanks Jo! WIT plans will be announced in the next video! 😁
loved Wellness! I brought it with me to Chicago trip, not knowing it took place in Chicago -- I started it there and finished it on the plane back. didn't get on with Kunzru's "Red Pill" at all (in fact I quite hated it haha) but you're making me curious to check out "Blue Ruin". and now i'm just noticing that all of his last three book titles so far are red, white, and blue plus a noun lol.
I love the synchronicity of your Wellness experience. I DNFed Red Pill when I tried it recently. I think that might reflect well on you enjoying Blue Ruin like me. I have yet to try the next one "White (?)" but hopefully it'll be another great one.
I am poor at reading but I have once read all or most of an abridged children's version of 'Black Beauty' by Anna Sewell, illustrated by Neil Reed. I think that these Booker Prize readers are geniuses for reading so many novels!
Good morning, Charlotte. Great content. I would like you to read the book, My Friends by Hisham Matar (If you haven't read it) and talk about its chances of being Booker-nominated. I think it will be a strong contender. Last month, the book won the Orwell Prize for political fiction. Have a beautiful day, Charlotte.
It'll be interesting to see if that makes the longlist!
This was great Charlotte....loved this idea!
Thank you 🥰
I like this idea ❤
Thank you 🥰
Your longlist reaction needs to be a tarot reading predicting the winner! I think you've misread the woman with experience que, as Ali Smith has an early release in our part of the world, she's not eligible until next year. Maybe that's a second card predicting Alexis Wright.
Nooooo!! 😭 I was so sure I'd got through a predictions video without predicting one that's ineligible! 😂😂 Maybe next year!
This was brilliant!
🥰
You've applied more logic to the longlist than the judges will tbh
😂😂
If these predictions come to pass, I will begin the campaign to rename the Booker to the Rider-Waite prize.
😂😂 it's the only thing that makes sense!
Fun video idea and predictions, Charlotte!
Thank you 🥰
didn't know u were into fortune telling but guess tarot cards are as good as any other predictor of the winner⚛😀❤
Hidden depths 😂
Ah yes, I love magical realism - fun recommendations. Thanks for the bookish inspiration.
You are so welcome! 😁
Great Expectations sounds really interesting
I'm one of those unknown, debut novelists on this year's list. I hope it isn't dominated by these well established authors :-) My book is on the goodreads list, currently sat in 21st place. I can dream! P
Title: Once Upon A Time There Was A Man
Good Luck Peter! I'm confused, you think the 7 Debut novelists in this video are well established? Or you're referring to the vast amount of authors with eligible titles this year who are well established, often with previous Booker nominations?
@@BruntonpeteI think this is the first time I've had confirmation that a novel has been submitted by the publisher. Usually that isn't released. Exciting- thanks for sharing! 😁
I would be alongside the debut novelists from your video. I think myself, and those highlighted in your video, are up against some big hitters and established names. I feel like Charlie Bucket looking for that elusive golden ticket - not expecting much but hoping for everything.
@@Bruntonpete well if you get on, I'll be cheering for you in my reaction video that I'll post the day after the announcement! 😁
Where you live seems like a dream 🥺 you have a huge garden and a temple right next to your house? Awww
Some good choices since I need to fulfill a 2024 debut author for the Montana Book store challenge.
Some really interesting titles here! Shanghailanders sounds really interesting to me! And How I Won a Nobel Prize sounds like a hoot! And Great Expectations does sound sooo Booker!
Hey Camila! Thanks! Glad you like the sound of them!😁
I got an ARC of Shanghailanders a few months ago and really enjoyed it, especially as someone new to living and working in Shanghai. Give it a try and let us know what you think.
I just subscribed to your channel and am really enjoying your vlogs. But wow, please no spoilers! Luckily I already read Our Wives Under the Sea.
Great to hear about debut novels. Good work! Thanks
Glad you like it! And nice to see you in the comments as usual! 🥰
how I won a nobel prize sounds like it could be very funny and the julie min book also looks interesting as it may have a kind of sci-fi element starting in 2040 and going back to 2014⚛😀❤
Yes, I found "Nobel Prize" humorous
Even if none of these get onto the list, it’s still nice to hear about some debut novels Charlotte! Fingers are crossed at least one makes it! 🤞
Yes! My thoughts exactly Jo! Debut novels are always worth a video! 😄
I couldn't help put laugh at just how accurate you were when you said the Booker likes a divisive novel. Just finished The Coast Road By Alan Murrin last night, reminds me of both The Bee Sting and How to Build a Boat... Maybe that's just because they're all Irish, but I think it's a good outsider.
The Coast Road! Not one on my radar, so thank you, I will explore!
Interesting! Fingers crossed! I have missed you. I haven't heard about any of the books you mentioned in video until the time I watched your video. I am really interested in the first book you talked about-maybe due to the Kurdish struggle. Good morning from Ibadan, Nigeria.
happy booker season! last year was my first time following the prize from longlist to winner. seeing everyone's utter shock at the lack of big-names and the ensuing discourse was super fun haha. hoping to see similar surprises this year, though I'm not a huge fan of the Cunningham myself. i had yiyun li as a professor in college where she taught a class on "the short story". she was one of the best instructors i've ever had. booker hype aside, i hope she's doing okay. she lost one of her children seven years ago to suicide (inspiring much of her recent work), and I read recently that she lost her other child to suicide in February of this year. :(
Yes in researching her, through various interviews, I learnt her backstory and it is all rather sad. At one point, I wondered if she would pull out of judging the prize entirely this year.
I don't imagine it will receive much consideration, but I really enjoyed Brat, Gabriel Smith's debut novel which was recently released in the US.
It’s released on the uk and has middling reviews from bookmarks collation though well like by you and onyl one other online booktuber whose read it
Brat is one of the novels I've read in preparation for the longlist announcement. Unsure if it's "booker" enough. But I agree, an enjoyable read.
As someone who enjoys shorter novels alongside short stories and novellas, I would be thrilled to see fewer tomes this year. But the list is always interesting and I always look forward to reading as many as I can.
