    I share your disappointment. I think there are many competent, but not stellar, writers out there. I get the impression that budding writers are choosing hot topics to attract readers but the books often don’t deliver as they fail to marry the writing and content. Perhaps it is because I am a much older and definitely more jaded reader. Whatever. I struggle to find books that really move me, or offer much that is genuinely authentic. As do my book group friends. I know this will not resonate with younger readers but …hey ho!

      A refreshing take that is needed and resonates with me and my reading.

    Why is an "unknown" book a bad thing? Isn't the point of the prize--in part--to be exposed to new authors and books? The list is from places all around the world, on diverse topics, in different genres. I don't agree that booktuber predictions should be the metric against which we judge the list!

  • @mjacton
    @mjacton 7 месяцев назад +28

    Why is it disappointing that booktuber predictions are wrong. This seems like a superficial reaction. More new books from new authors isn't disappointing.

      Yes it is superficial, deep dive thoughts on the books coming soon

    I liked that there were a lot of surprises and books that no one was talking about. Could that be because there are so many debut authors on the list? I don't know. I guess I hope the judges are picking things that should be on people's radar and not just picking books they like. Frankly, I was thrilled to not see some of the big names. We'll see how it goes.

    I’m astonished that you think Booktube has its finger on the pulse of new literary fiction 😂

    I mean, I think it's kind of interesting to discover new books through these prizes, rather than seeing every prize and every "greatest books" list feature the exact same books over and over. Plus, all authors had to debut, if everyone just automatically wrote them off because they hadn't heard of them, none of them would have careers. Keep in mind, some of the books that were predicted a lot may not have even been read by the judges, since the selection process is very specific and they only end up reading a relatively small number of books, out of all the year's releases. Yes, it is rather odd if so many of the big name books are not on the list but it's not automatically a bad thing. I always like seeing surprise nominations in prizes/awards, it keeps readers on their toes and introduces them to new things that may have fallen under the radar because they weren't being pushed relentlessly by the huge publishing houses or were ignored by booktubers and celebrities who were all focusing on the same books that were being thrust into the mainstream. Popular and hyped doesn't mean it's good, and obscure doesn't mean it's bad. I love stumbling on obscure little gems, they are unexpected delights. Some books on this list interest me more than others but I'm feeling overall rather positive.
    I think part of the reason some people are disappointed is, honestly, because they were wrong in their predictions and that competitive side of them doesn't like that, which I get. I think booktubers often feel like their hand is on the pulse but a lot of times they are just following trends and perhaps the judges for this prize wanted to be trendsetters instead. Just a thought.

    • @charlottemolloy
      @charlottemolloy  7 месяцев назад

      Yes- I like everything that you say, and my confidence in the women's prize judges' ability to find a literary pulse, like last year, remains low 😆🤣

    Oh dear, sorry that you are disappointed in the list. Personally I love the fact that there are lots of books I hadn't heard of. So fresh!!Its so hard to judge without reading them...a blurb can be very misleading. Hopefully some will end up being enjoyable for you.

    I had not a single match with my prediction video. However, I highly respect the jury's chair, Monica Ali. She is one of my favourite writers. This time, I found 4 books that are interesting at a first glance. I made a video about them. "Western Lane" is really a short condensed little masterpiece.

    Brotherless Night was my favourite book of the 160 I read last year, so it has at least one fan. And Eight Lives of A Century-Old Trickster was number 7 on my fiction top 10. I also really enjoyed River East, River West. I hope you get through more than a chapter of them!

    How do you know that the books that booktube predicted were even submitted? Besides the ones that are automatically submitted, of course.

      The prize doesn't disclose whats been submitted. I don't think they ever have.

    I found your channel recently and I've been really enjoying it! I have so many mixed thoughts, I agree booktube tends to be more on the pulse than bookish media seems to be, also agree with some comments that these prizes are a great way to shine a light on some unknown books, but also it would be great to see a couple of kind of 'fan favourite' books on the list!

    • @charlottemolloy
      @charlottemolloy  7 месяцев назад

      Hey Harriet! I'm so glad you found my channel and are enjoying! 😍 Yes I'm in total agreement with you, I've never said every book on the longlist should be "known", I follow book prizes to read new books! 😁

  • @rhyst124
    @rhyst124 7 месяцев назад +2

    Some books seem great. I will read three: Hangman, 8 Lives of a Century-Old Trickster & River East, River West.
    Despite of this- I would be shocked if the Shortlist *wasn't* Anne Enright, Chetna Maroo, Claire Kilroy, Isabella Hammad, Megan Nolan... as the prize needs media coverage. followers=currency, so Jonathan Cape, Faber will have a decent night.

    I am intrigued by “The Maiden.” I hadn’t heard of it, but I see it won the Bloody Scotland award for debut novel. I’m having a difficult time finding a copy here in America. My library doesn’t have it. Local indie bookstores don’t have it. It’s not on Audible. I can get a copy from Amazon but I’m exploring other options. There’s not a lot on this that really grabs me. Thanks for the video, Charlotte.

    There qere SO many books on booktube prediction lists that I was excited to read including the many that were not really 'commercial'. I am less excited by the blurbs of this set. Also, Western Lane - oof.
    On the bright aide, Im 75% through Enter Ghost and its amazing.
    Also, Defence of the Act was the one I was LEAST excited about and Indecided to "swallow the frog" and downloaded it on my ereader last night. Its much better than I initially expected 75 pages in.
    Hope there are some diamonds in there for you.

    Nothing immediately grabs me. There are a lot of debuts, so who knows the judging panel may have found some exceptional new authors. I think the prize has too many books on the longlist. Is the panel really coalescing around all the books or is the number of books on the longlist allowing everyone to have their favourites?

    • @charlottemolloy
      @charlottemolloy  7 месяцев назад

      Excellent point Sonia. Having had the chance to look at the themes of all 16 books it's also clear that the same themes are cropping up over and over: motherhood & migration to name two. Potentially the judges had a type and stuck with it.

    One of my friends said she fell asleep looking at the spines when the Women's Prize posted a picture of the longlist, and I feel like your reaction is very much in line with that! I have seen a couple of people get quite excited about the list, mainly BECAUSE they didn't predict any or know many, so it's introducing them to new books. Very happy for those people, but... 😅 Hope you find some hidden gems when you read samples
