Loved the video. Fun!!! The amount of newly published books you read, I'm surprised you don't have more of these videos. These days I rarely finish a new book. I feel there has been a drop in quality for many years now in literary novels. I have started reading older books to fix this DNF problem, and I tend to have more luck finishing them. 😂
@@charlottemolloy But I do like you keeping me up to date with the new titles! Even though I don't buy so many these days I still like to know what's going on from you
I enjoyed this video. I'm so with you on The Fraud, I'm terrified it will be longlisted. I've read Chlorine, I doubt very much it will be longlisted, but maybe one of the judges likes bad books.
Zadie Smith wrote an essay about EM Forrester that had a sly "joke" about his sexuality in it. I didn't mind her painfully erudite writing style. Is she a mean spirited person who punches down though? I can't unsee it in my mind and I just can't read her work now.
Haha I loved this!! Gonna stay away from Penance as can’t cope with graphic body horror. I have heard quite a few bad things about The Fraud now. So even though I think it’s in with a strong chance of being listed I probably won’t get to it 🤷♀️ Thank you for shouting out the Plodalong again 😘❤️
I don't think my reading tastes overlap too much with yours, but this time I actually agree with you almost 100% (I did like Western Lane, but I'm not really expecting to see it on the longlist). In addition what I really don't want to see is another Greek myth retelling that's basically the exact same story only centered on a female character and with a snappy modern writing style.
Thank you, Charlotte. Your vidoes are always enjoyable. I'm glad the intro is back. Since 56% of books published in the US are written by women, it seems like the men are really under-represented in this prize! 🙂
that's such a fun idea for a video! haha I'm with you with on Soldier Sailor - doesn't sound like my kind of thing. And I've read The Fraud and wished I hadn't wasted my time - definitely hoping it doesn't make the list. I don't think Yellowface is the kind of book that makes the women's prize...but I guess we never know! And yes Penance, I had it on my initial predictions list but he more I looked at it the more I was like, no I don't want it.
Charlotteeeee I CANNOT accept this Soldier Sailor negativity 😭 It’s bloody fantastic. It’s really not that ‘stream of consciousness’ (which is something I struggle with) and is definitely just a very realistic take on motherhood rather than a takedown of it. Read it!!!
actually really reassuring to hear someone else say that about Zadie Smith’s work because I want to love it but just find it really full every time I try😅
@@charlottemolloy haha I’ve been laying low as there’s been a lot going on in my life. I don’t often comment but then you slagged off penance so I had to pipe up 😉
CHARLOTTE! ( this is a thing now , sowwie ) I’m sooooo excited for the WPFF longlist !!! And I’m not a non - fiction head typically but that list sounds like some bangers 📕 🪱 💚

I can relate to the quality drop. Maybe I should be heading to the older titles.

Well that's a relief about Chlorine!
So glad someone else doesnt get on with Zadie Smith 😅

Interesting point that I didnt know about- thank you!

Gotta get through 16 books on the longlist, may as well ditch a few! 😂
Oooo controversial Charlotte!! Love a bit of saltiness 😂😂
I don’t think I’ll be wanting anything to do with any book to do with the sea after Pod. 😂 I’ve never actually tried a Zadie Smith book.

That is true, please no Greek myth retellings! 😭
I'm still curious about The Fraud but I'm with you on the others.
😂 you’re on a roast roll
This has made me want to read Soldier Sailor 😂
I agree on the book of fire though. It's not her best work

You are not the first to say that about Zadie Smith but I still want to try some of her books. We will see what I think? 😊💙

Ben, i was waiting for your comment the second i saw Soldier Sailor.
Lol me too Kit, I knew this comment was coming from you Ben! 😂😜
I only comment things that are true!

I feel the same about Zadie Smith, I've DNFd White Teeth and have no interest in reading her books, but it will probably be on there.
I agree with all of these except for Soldier Sailor, which I thought was exceptional.
Agree on several! 😅
Loved this video. I did love penance though!
