NARCON ended up being a good 6+ month program for one of my kids. I wasn't thrilled about taking my son there and dropping him off -- no matter how much you read about it, do research on the structure and goals of the program, meet the people, walkthrough the property, etc., you will never feel complete trust in letting a group of people place your kid in their care for a few months. So many kids who get in trouble in their life by taking various drugs, spending time with other broken-screwed up kids for a few months! I had some familiarity with the book Dianetics while still in college. I tried to be openminded, but there were several things in the book and a bit of scientology practices that I couldn't abide by as one new to the thinking. I met a couple of people who were connected to the movement, but I couldn't connect with it and thought someone already confused and emotionally scared could get even more goofed up! Years later, a child of mine (actually a late teen/early 20-something) befriended other broken kids whose parents were quite well-off who allowed provided easy access to street drugs, alcohol, pills, etc. Our son had fallen so far down into depression, anxiety, and addiction that I constantly feared for his life. I wasn't excited about him going into a program like Narcanon when he was vulnerable and rebellious. Fortunately, he had enough exposure to more traditional religions, and he had made up his mind about his beliefs... he should be ok with the other teachings. The rehab program was great! He was able to get enough from the program without major brainwashing from the religious/dianetics. It's been well over a decade and he has managed to avoid recidivism -- Scientology could do well to export this program to other organizations to adopt! Kudos, truly!

How many people recognize massive Google ads for Steven Ridley and piano lessons are a trick to recruit for Scientology, while "free $4000 piano giveaways" are $300 cheap piano incentives to share personal info for Scientology recruiting scams? Should Scientologists be unemployable in medical fields? I was aware of doctors being coerced to illegally share patient lists for recruiting, but if hospital staff use such positions for organized crime scams also amounting to medical malpractice, perhaps dangerous cult involvement should be prima facie evidence of medical incompetence or hazards to patients?

It implies that building a ZEDE that is unfair to the Hondurans and the Honduras state, such that it prompts expulsion, is a faster, less risky business model than actually building anything of worth in Honduras. No wonders the system has been deemed unconstitutional -- it is a theft of Hondura's future. It reminds me of how France shafted Haiti over lost revenues from ending slavery there. It still has dramatic consequences today. The lack of financial education but also the spinelessness of the questions asked to Brimen really lowers my esteem of both podcast hosts.

A big strength and weakness of Singapore is its size. It's a very small island, and this makes managing internal security and implementing consistent infrastructure maintenance a lot more manageable. If you commit a crime, with how small the island is, there's really nowhere for you to hide. This contributed in large part to one of the huge draws of Singapore- stability. At the same time though this also leads into one of the key issues Singapore is facing right now- overcrowding. There's only so much land area they have and only so much land they can reclaim, and right now with 6 million people the populace is feeling that squeeze. The challenge now (among many others of course) for Singapore is how to continue growing its population while working around these physical constraints because realistically speaking, they ain't getting any more territory from its neighbours.

Isnt the entirety of this argument about regulatory bodies and safety what the US was like in the 19th century? (e.g. the direct sale of snake oil to the populace, company towns, bank runs, etc.?) Have we not seen that for-profit companies do not have the consumers' best interests at heart - ever? The consumer cannot be expected to know everything about any product or service and honestly determine whats best/safest/efficacious, etc. The lack of historical perspective here is staggering.

so, here's a dumb question: did anyone ever bother to check the belief system of Zoroastrianism and it's Equilibrium offshoot (basically the balance of all things and actions) from over 2000 years ago and compare them to scientology? sure, the terms are far more modern but as far as i can see it (and somehow stilll remember from what i've read about a decade ago), they're basically the same thing. the core belief of an endless cycle of reincarnation and a fresh start by locking away all the knowledge of your previous life, the promise of ascension after a long and arduous path, the promise of abilities far beyond what a human's limits are, the threat of beings from outside our realm/land/planet (land in Zoroastrianism, realm in Equilibrium), the usage of rankings to denote a totalitarian rule trickling from top to bottom (basically obey your superior and treat your subordinates like shit), the self-imposed isolation from outside influence, unless you wish to bring a new believer into the fold... and the list does not stop there. i'm in no way and expert and not even the books and papers i've read on those 2 ancient religions were written by experts so my analysis could be flawed. i just found all of this really funny.
