10/10 episode, very insightful and the way John Spencer explains it is very digestible and helps when I talk to friends and family about the vast difference between Israel and Hamas.
I never understood the NATO argument for people defending Russia's fears. NATO has been on the border of the Soviet Union and then NATO since it was founded. Norway is a founding member basically, and that means that about 100 miles from the largest and most important naval base for the Soviets/Russians is the Norwegian border and NATO. Its fucking insane to argue that this near fear is legit.
Such an ignorant comment. Of course Russia would view NATO and the EU as hostile. They know that Russia would never be allowed in and it would cause damage to Russia over time as well as expand to cause even more damage. Does that make it a good idea to invade Ukraine, no. At least in this 20/20 hindsight where they get hurt badly and only achieve very limited goals. Just viewing things black and white is propaganda. Russia isnt an evil empire, they just have opposing interest in cases like this. This youtube channel is just political crap disguised as objective info
Not even Putin argues that it was the NATO "threat". It's something that hacks like Mearshiemer repeat because they've spent their whole careers arguing that international relations are like mathematical equations and completely predictable... and have subsequently been wrong in several predictions. There's extensive documentation of the negotiations between NATO countries and post-Soviet Russia. There was never a formal agreement to not expand NATO. I forget who, but I believe an American at the time time pointed out that it wasn't a threat from NATO that scared Russia, they just didn't want to be humiliated by losing their entire sphere on influence to their former rivals.

Oh wow, I saw this and...man I subbing now. Ive seen some basic analysis on the Battle of Hostomel Airport...and hearing just the shear tenacity of the Ukrainian forces arrayed to fend off the attack, which was a lot of what we would consider national guard-type units at the start, but manned by some vets with experience dealing with Russian forces, and knowing their tactics...its just amazing how they were able to tactically foil the Russian forces, where most other forces might not have succeeded. I have also heard that former vets in other towns were just as capable on how to fight the Russians...and just using civilian resources to disrupt or prevent further advances, especially by using simple things like concrete roadblocks to prevent aircraft to land at regional airports, blocking roads in general, smashing railroad hubs (since their army was very dependent on road and rail networks), etc. Then, to see Ukraine TURN THE TABLES on the Russians and take back massive swaths of land around Kharkiv, using the same blitz-tactics...man, the Ukrainians are gonna be one of the hardest fighting militaries for years to come after this war, no matter what....we have much to learn from them.
Quite one sided. Ignoring most of the context. They say in the episode that war is a contest of wills. And also state that Hamas is sacrificing population to win the information war. But they don't connect the dots. How do the Palestinian people still have the will to fight? Imagine that your hospitals are blown up, all services from water to the Internet are spotty or down. Stores don't get stocked, gas stations don't have gas. How long would your will last? The Palestinians are willing to sacrifice themselves, because they don't have that much to loose. Israel has been slowly expanding through settlements oppressing and harassing Palestinians. There's not much to look forward to.
Three hours of arguments and discussion and the only thing you took from the conversation is this. And you talk something about seriousness. What a fart.

You have mentioned Joe Rogan, Im form Kyiv Ukraine. Am I right by thinking he is pro-russian as he never invited a single guest who would give pro - Ukrainian position ? All I saw on his channel about the Ukraine in this conflict was "Well is a corrupt country" ? Am I right ?
I enjoyed this conversation and found John Spencer’s insights on war informative, and Destiny and Erudite’s questions to be smart and enlightening. Agreed 100% on the commentary regarding Ukraine. However the 180 degree pivot on Gaza is frustrating because I see three intelligent commentators on geopolitical events nevertheless being inconsistent in their analysis. Spencer calls the war in Ukraine a genocide, I wholly agree. The mass graves we’ve unearthed so far are inexcusable (that’s just what we know so far) and the power disparity between countries is undeniable. Yet why is the analysis on death rates and power disparities in Gaza completely in the opposite direction despite everything we know and overt statements from top Israeli officials time and time again corroborating genocidal acts? The numbers are there and the intent/motive is explicit in their words and actions. The civilian death rate in Gaza is far greater, and yet all we hear is pushback from you on numbers, a he-said-she-said, it’s just fog of war justification for it. If the Ukrainian rate is genocide (and it is), Gaza must be. You won’t find me justifying Hamas or its actions, they’re despicable. Both things can be true, they are not mutually exclusive. I enjoy the commentary you all bring to the Bridges platform and I look forward to you all finding your way to consistency on this topic.
This sours me on them. How can you not see Israel's bad actions here? The West Bank isn't run by Hamas, yet there are settlements there. There are incidents there like its Tuscaloosa in Jim Crow. Mass starvation is taking hold in Gaza, yet no attention is paid on how much of an atrocity it is. The hospitals before being bombed were running out of supplies. You have a lack of clean water. Parts of Gaza look like the Russians went through it.
@@richardarriaga6271 Yes I still don’t understand the disconnect. They had a lengthy skeptical conversation on the Palestinian death toll numbers picking over everything with a fine-toothed comb, the result of which is a lower estimate that is still unforgivable. Meanwhile, barely a word on the Ukrainian numbers. The best estimates I’ve seen so far on civilian-combatant death ratios in Ukraine are about 1:2, which John unhesitatingly calls a genocide, and with which I agree. Yet the numbers in Palestine are flipped at roughly 2:1. When you consider that Ukraine had 38 million people while Palestine had 2 million, and still the casualties are greater in Palestine by purely raw numbers, it can only be cognitive dissonance that allows them to call the former genocide, and the latter a justified (some dare even say admirable) restraint in the fog of war.
@@Respectrogramthe reason is because this man works for the US military/state department. One key reason the US is so focused on blocking any war crime investigations into Israel is because the US also deserves the same level of scrutiny, and never wants to face it. America's hold on global power depends on it and its allies not being investigated or prosecuted for the violations that they deem necessary.
Excellent comment. Their justification of Israel's actions is very inconsistent. It gives no context to the existence of the Israel-Palestine war prior to October 7th and glosses over the many blatant ways Israel has explicitly targeted civilians.
These podcasts are great, I'm in college and its so hard to find any solid opinions nowadays that aren't just incredibly biased or pushing narratives. This podcast feels honestly the closest to the middle regarding facts. Feel like I've learned a lot so far. Keep it up!
I suggest take a big grain of salt with this one. While he's critical towards Palestine, he has only praise for the IDF and Netanyahu. Might have been a valid stance after the first couple of weeks of the invasion, but as it's turning into genocide, with Netanyahu becoming a globally wanted criminal, I think some introspection would be needed.
John raises several good points, especially about the weaponisation of the existing rules of war by Hamas and pointing out that the invasion by Russia is an attack on the overall systems that have dictated the actions of nations since ww2, which requires a response. I do have to critique it in at least one major sense though - what does he think Israel's long term goals are with the invasion? Does he think that if they stop attacking that will immediately lead to a resurgence of Hamas attacks? Israel is fundamentally the more powerful actor here, by far, and it has the leeway to defend itself. Obviously that doesn't solve the long term threat from the state's perspective, and perhaps that creates opportunities for Hamas to attack again in the future after they reconstitute themselves. But again, it is not beyond Israel to defend themselves against that, and I don't think they realistically can stamp out the the enemy with which they are dealing without committing genocide. I would argue that even from a real politik perspective, there is no good solution here but to pull back.
You really think the West doesn't follow them at all? Nonsense. They may break them from time to time because it's fundamentally hard to constrain powerful nation states, but by and large they do stick by them.

It was mentioned in the discussion that Ukraine CAN'T invade Russia - but this is rather old restrictions. The Ukrainians are now on the other side of the border with combat units invading Russia. So status quo has changed.
It has, there are still some limits on some weapons but it has slowly become less restricted recently, but it’s true that it’s pretty absurd it took Russia abusing that for over a year for western countries to finally let Ukraine strike military targets in Russia that were firing on them, when in their own country getting fired on by someone would always let their own military shoot back. In the us military had someone operating somewhere, even if there was no intention to get in a fight, if a military started shooting at them they’d always be allowed to shoot back, and meanwhile Ukraine had to sit there while Russia was explicitly sitting just inside their own border to attack from the safe zone, after Russia was the aggressor.
I'm an overt crtic of Destiny's, especially lately, when it comes to his positions on domestic politics (to put it mildly). But I only preface with that to say that ultimately, he's a major net positive and a great intellectual presence in the online space, and this episode was him at his best. Whether you're right or left, can you name one or several better voices on the left right now?
I am torn on Destiny - there are times he drives me crazy (Trump assassination attempt), but there are other times when he's super thoughtful. 1:57 Why did she say people dont study war in an academic way? yeah traditional universities dont have them but war is studied at military colleges around the world constantly
Because military colleges and analysts are a bit outside the usual academic bubble. As far as I am aware of, you rarely hear them speak publicly or read what they've written if you aren't specifically looking it up. Usually commentators are of a more academic background in political science or history. Basically military guys try to avoid the limelight for various reasons.
@@GrahamCStrouseyes and no. You're not going to get the in depth study of logistics and tactics that you get at an actual military college in a traditional university, though, unless it's for historic warfare.
I don't understand why Israel vs Hamas and Ukraine vs ruzzia are compared or brought in the same relm of conversation. First conflict is 1 to 30 in terms of scale and in terms of weaponary 1 to 100... But still viewed as more or less the same magnitude of the scale
@@michaelh878 Agree, 250% of people in Gaza are having fun and enjoying siesta every day on their luxary yachts... while only 99% of ukrainians that left Ukraine are safe. Disgrace!

I meant more the ease of moving to safer areas inside the countries.
@@michaelh878 Well it's a bull shit... because I live in Kyiv and the ruzzian rocket that striked child hospital is about 200 meters from me... people died. And it's only one example. At this point thousands rockets of different types striked Ukraine, even at the west of Ukraine. Damn last week guy just lost three daughters and a wife because of a rocket strike and he lives thousand kilometers from the front line. So you don't know what are you talking about! I'm talking about the scale of war... Where in Ukraine there is full power war with thousands of tank, armored vehicles, hundreds of helicopters, long range rockets, MLRS, artilery systems, fighter jets, naval powers.... And Israel is fighting people with guns, rifles, hand granades by using f-35 jets, tanks, artilery, etc... One is a huge war where two armies of 2 million soldiers involved with full military equipment.... Another is basically a safari on arabs by jews.... There is nothing to compare... damn Gaza doesn't even have army, even army!!!
I thought they were being compared because they are current wars. I understand he is not an expert on this but I wish the Apartaid state was discussed more. There was a discussion on the importance of boundaries but not a discussion of the land seized by Israel. There was a good discussion on Hamas using civilians as a propaganda tool and living in luxury but not a discussion on the Palestinians and their plight. I understand that the guests expertise is only on war but the boundaries and seizing of land would have been a better comparison with Israel and Russia.
Biggest thing i learned from this war in Ukraine is that "military advisor" is not legally protected term and 90% of them dont know what they are talking about. This guy actually studies war.
Thanks for a interesting interview that left me looking at both conflicts differently. Overall I liked it. However, I found it problematic how little time he spend talking about any other independent investigations and investigators. After a read of a couple of those sources, it seems clear he really papered over Israeli army misbehavior and did not give a nuisanced view on how the rules of just war have been bent.
Suggestion Maybe Dman should do the introduction after or before in a short clip then add it at the start of the discussion. Then they can just casually start the episode. Something like what Lex Friedman does. Then he doesn't need to F-up introducing the guy while trying to be serious.
Agree, but he should also not say “welcome to bridges podcast episode 16” like this is some lets play and just say the introduction of the guest. He might as well do the sponsor segment while filming for the intro too, instead of doing it in front of the guest
I really loved this episode but anyone notice John repeating the same thing multiple times found that kind of annoying I was like yes we heard you the first time. Now maybe that is not on John and instead of Destiny and Kyla for asking questions that got the same answer

Appeasement wasn't just weakness. It was based on recognising Hitler as a threat, but netierh Britain nor France once the remilitarisation of the Rhineland happened held the means to fight Germany. Even Hitler at that point was scared of a massive war. The carnage of WW1 on all sides was within living memory, and many of the WW2 leaders had fought in WW1 close-up. It's easy to look back and think they were misguided but they could only do what they thought was best and practicable at the time.
You can definitely excuse their bad decisions somewhat because they didn't exactly have recent historical events to draw conclusions from. Nowadays there is no excuse to argue for appeasement because we know exactly what effect it has on dictators with grand ambitions of conquest. It doesn't appease them, it doesn't satisfy them, you only move the frontline closer to yourself without getting anything in return.
Appeasement really only went as far as Austria and German-speaking Czechoslovakia. As soon as German boots were in Poland appeasement was over. I think people forget that France joined Britain in declaring war but the Nazis narutu-ran into France from Poland before the already-late mobilization could cover their exposed flank. ALSO there were NO cases of appeasement leading into WWI, as Kyra states, that's unequivocally false for any side at any level. Germany immediately invaded Belgium as part of a strategy to dominate France before Russia could mobilize. Everyone fought back instantly, Serbia with Austria, Belgium with Germany, France with Germany, and Britain with Germany.
1:03:48 exactly. a thriving big country so close, that can speak the same language to a large degree, with many relatives cross countries, is the real long term risk for a chronically kleptocratic government. nato was a half dead organization prior to 2022.

2:11:20 I love saying “you boil your POPTARTS?” Loudly in shock at people in public settings if they’re being annoying, they have to defend and it doesn’t matter that they don’t boil their poptarts bc defending it is already an L.

oh god, i finally grasp what is wrong with all these anti-genocide pro-Palestinian leftists (and it is not only my angry Ukrainian soul) thank you for the podcast!
Thanks for this interview, I've been struggling with a lot of the questions and issues discussed here, partly because of how propagandised the whole world seems to be in Hamas' favour. I was essentially guilt-tripped into the simplified "Israeli genocide" narrative
I don't remember Jocko putting forth the argument that a Special Forces team could just drop in and rescue the hostages. I remember other, non-military commentators making such speculations, but Jocko himself has a more realistic representation of Special Forces units, as far as I know.
Destiny's video on learning who Jocko is has some lady misrepresent Jocko in saying he said just send in Special Forces, but when we actually listened to Jocko's podcast, he said that Israel needs to win the hearts and minds of the people while fighting Hamas. He never said anything about Special Forces.
@35:15 destroying a country for decades should make you second guess military actions. You should welcome this reminder and have some reason your are very confident the next thing is different.
1:13:49, I would argue the Japanese were working towards that point in 44-45 especially within Manchuria. There were active plans to use Japanese Settlers as a militia to hold the line against a Soviet advance from the north long enough for Japanese troops to reinforce the areas under attack. Yes it's not exactly the same and was borne out of a desperate war situation but history could've played out very differently in North Manchuria if the Soviet invasion did not go as well. TLD;R: the Japanese govt/military still invested in fighting the war were more than willing to sacrifice their populations in such a way but cooler heads (and nukes) prevailed.
Iraq is about 10 times smaller than the US so a proper comparison would be for Russia to invade Romania Of course, Iraq did not get billions of dollars in military support nor did it get it's air-defense rebuilt after it was completely annihilated. Although, Iraq was also located halfway around the globe, so there's that.
The US military and economy is massively larger than Russia. Also the aircraft carriers have great force projection. Russia is fighting on its own border against a militarised puppet state of the US. It's just proxy war so the US can say 'omg Russia is so bad for fighting wars' while they fight wars through other nations or terrorists etc.
Please ask Ruslan Leviev from CIT to do an interview with you. CIT - The Conflict Intelligence Team is an independent investigative organization from Russia that specializes in open-source intelligence and human intelligence. They have being doing every day updates on the war since couple of month before the war and are highly respected in the field of war analytics.
Those of use who went through the Second Intifada can confirm everything that he said. And, there's one more thing. People often get their idea of how war should work by the entertainment they consume.
I thought from October 7 on Israel should have taken the gloves off Hamas has not signed on to the Geneva Convention rules of war so Israel should show them what that entails.
Around the 1:15:41 mark....okay, I have aome thoughts and opinions here, let me start with a remark a little before this point where our student of war, who has been in war, and walked the ground etc, seems very dismissive of a hypothetical counter terrorism expert, who one would presume is a scholar of counterterrorism and who has walked the ground and all that jazz, one would also presume that the past 20 years of war in the middle east, means they would have a lot of material to study....idk, struck me as a little ...offputting, but okay whatever, much earlier in the video he asserts repeatedly about how important it is to respect the boundaries of sovereign territory, framing the october attacks as an invasion,a gross violation of sovereignty, and in a way, yes I agree, but when asked, oh so the objective was to hold their territory? He responds with, well it was really to incite a general uprising which he follows with, and it did I guess, in a way....that is all well and good, but it is never mentioned that the numerous Isreali settlements in the golan heights, GZ, and westbank , backed by the Isreali Government, are illegal under international law, in violation of Article 49 of the 4th Geneva convention, A gross violation of the sanctity of internationally recognized sovereign borders, Alright, so I'm starting to recognize a little bias here, seems somewhat less than the objectivity one would expect from a student of warfare, is my all I'm saying, especially since he himself mentions thats what these people do 'they try to change history, or leave out parts of history. Hm. Everything he says about Russia, I totally agree with, his responses are thoughtful, and nuanced, and actually a lot of what he is saying on isreal, I agree with as well actually, but the thoughtful nuance? I'm really not seeing it as much here. It's just very strange to me how you can decry Russia for it's war on ukraine, and say yes ukrainians are defending their homeland from a much larger global milatary power trying to gobble it up piecemeal, land they've lived on for centuries, and then never at any point mention that a much larger global military power gobbled up piecemeal the land where Palestinians had been living, for centuries, resulting in the Nakba in 1948, look it up, it was horrific, but when those people want to take their land back , no, unacceptable. Because we decided these were the new sovereign borders and you have to respect sovereign borders. A student of wafare and of history mightve mentioned that for context. Again, I agree with him on almost everything, so don't make the mistake of thinking I don't understand the fact that Israel isnt a key asset in our countries strategic plans, we need an ally in the middle east, and if we ever get into a shooting war with China, which seems increasingly likely sooner or later, having a nuclear armed ally to help us take and hold strategic middle eastern oil reserves will be vital, and if that means we ignore an ally doing something we would condemn an enemy for doing, so be it. ' every actor is going to act in his best interest' indeed. One last little thing, saying that you dont like calling Hamas terrorists , because they are a government and that lets them off the hook a little bit 'and if you treat them al qaeda or the taliban youll never be succesful, The Taliban was also a government entity like hamas, and it seemed like their strategy of resistance worked out for them alright, and although Al Qaeda was not a government entity in amd of itself, it was Bin Ladens stated goal in planning and launching the 911 attack in order to goad the US into launching a protracted war, which would make us look bad on an international stage, kill thousands of his own people (oh look, human sacrifice as a tactic,) drain our resources, destabilize the region, and wear us down through attrition just like they had done to Russia in the 80's, and if I'm being objective again, yeah... it sortve worked how he thought it would, Hamas is really just taking a page out of their book, and I think its really important to acknowledge that if we want to defeat them and avoid falling into the same pitfall

At least in this 20/20 hindsight where they get hurt badly and only achieve very limited goals. Just viewing things black and white is propaganda. Russia isnt an evil empire, they just have opposing interest in cases like this. This youtube channel is just political crap disguised as objective info
To me it sounds like it’s either money or stupidity. I mean, nobody was complaining when the Baltic states joined the NATO alliance.
@@jordanwhite8718as someone from the Baltics - lots of people complained and complain to this day. The British & French seem to be especially miffed by it.
and IF it were to come to a war, its not by ground invasion lol. We have enough nuclear arms to destroy each other completely.
Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦
Operator Starsky was at hostomel .
"is there anything you want people to know about urban warfare or war that we didnt cover?"
"war,,,, war never changes."
Clicked on the video skeptical of me ever watching all 3 hours. Ended up watching all of it. Pretty decent breakdown of the conflict in Israel.

Really enjoying these episodes. Thank you!
Fear of escalation, is how you get escalation. Bullys only understand strength and weakness.
Would love to see Sarah Paine on here from the us naval war college
I would argue that even from a real politik perspective, there is no good solution here but to pull back.
who cares about isreal, this is about ukraine.

Ukrainians arent invading russia, it's a special military operation. jeez

Military history is studied at traditional universities.
Yeah they are totally different, 99% of Ukraine is untouched and people are totally safe there at any given point in time. Gaza is totally different.
@@michaelh878 Agree, 250% of people in Gaza are having fun and enjoying siesta every day on their luxary yachts... while only 99% of ukrainians that left Ukraine are safe. Disgrace!
@@mitchk1145 What I meant was that the outside of the frontline people in Ukraine are safe whereas nowhere in Gaza is safe. I guess with the forced conscription in Ukraine the men aren't really safe anywhere (except the rich ones). But yeah I get your point about the difficulty of leaving gaza vs leaving Ukraine as well.
That's where his bread is buttered

@@paddington1670true. Apologies.
i know, right
Appeasement wasn't just weakness.

Incredible video.

God this was so good
Iraq is about 10 times smaller than the US
so a proper comparison would be for Russia to invade Romania
Of course, Iraq did not get billions of dollars in military support nor did it get it's air-defense rebuilt after it was completely annihilated.
Although, Iraq was also located halfway around the globe, so there's that.
The US military and economy is massively larger than Russia. Also the aircraft carriers have great force projection. Russia is fighting on its own border against a militarised puppet state of the US. It's just proxy war so the US can say 'omg Russia is so bad for fighting wars' while they fight wars through other nations or terrorists etc.
speak that truth

He's pretty good.
Two is one, one is none is an army-wide axiom. Basic redundancy stuff. One of the few sayings that (sometimes) confuses civilians when you say it.
What John said at 36:06 about “strategic narcissism” is a VERY critical idea in studying conflict.
Destiny talking to an elf, how far he's fallen!
He responds with, well it was really to incite a general uprising which he follows with, and it did I guess, in a way....that is all well and good, but it is never mentioned that the numerous Isreali settlements in the golan heights, GZ, and westbank , backed by the Isreali Government, are illegal under international law, in violation of Article 49 of the 4th Geneva convention,
A gross violation of the sanctity of internationally recognized sovereign borders,
Alright, so I'm starting to recognize a little bias here, seems somewhat less than the objectivity one would expect from a student of warfare, is my all I'm saying, especially since he himself mentions thats what these people do 'they try to change history, or leave out parts of history. One last little thing, saying that you dont like calling Hamas terrorists , because they are a government and that lets them off the hook a little bit 'and if you treat them al qaeda or the taliban youll never be succesful,
The Taliban was also a government entity like hamas, and it seemed like their strategy of resistance worked out for them alright, and although Al Qaeda was not a government entity in amd of itself, it was Bin Ladens stated goal in planning and launching the 911 attack in order to goad the US into launching a protracted war, which would make us look bad on an international stage, kill thousands of his own people (oh look, human sacrifice as a tactic,) drain our resources, destabilize the region, and wear us down through attrition just like they had done to Russia in the 80's, and if I'm being objective again, yeah... it sortve worked how he thought it would, Hamas is really just taking a page out of their book, and I think its really important to acknowledge that if we want to defeat them and avoid falling into the same pitfall
At 1:23:00, there is a massive geo-political discussion, it is one of the core issues.
