Rivet making with Norton No.8 Fly Presses
The Amateur Blacksmith
A quick video showing the tooling and method I use for making rivets.
The rivet is make from 10mm black rod, which is oversize and therefore the rivets are 10.5mm.
The rivets are for joining 2 x 10mm parts, 15mm is required for the head and 15mm for the other side, therefore 50mm overall.

Amateur Blacksmithing Forging a quick batch of Candle Sconces/Bowls using a 4" Ball Bearing and Doming block in a Norton No.8 Fly Press. I started out with some 147mm diameter blanks that were 6mm thick. I bought the doming block from Nigel Barnett of Forged Ironmongery: www.forged-ironmongery.co.uk/product/new-from-victory-tools-blacksmith-and-armourers-swage-doming-block/ The ball bearing cam...

Another Amateur Blacksmith project… Forging a bowl out of 4mm plate that I had kicking around. I cut a 8¼ inches round using a plasma cutter and then form the bowl using a Norton No.8 Fly Press, 4 inch Ball Bearing, and Doming block. The bowl has a lovely ring to it - very musical - You could almost call it a singing bowl. I bought the doming block from Nigel Barnett of Forged Ironmongery: www....
Fencing Staple Remover

Tools I make for removing Fencing Staples from livestock fencing. There are many different tools available for removing fencing staples, many of which I tried and not been happy with, so over a number of different prototypes I came up with this tool. Initially I was using combine harvester fingers, but they were wide and had a habit of fracturing where the hardened cutting face was. Then I move...

Blacksmithing - Hydraulic Press or Pneumatic Power Hammer?

This is a quick test of my 30 ton Anyang STP-S Hydraulic Press compared to my Anyang ST 25 kg Pneumatic Power Hammer. In the video I'm forging a piece of EN19 (4140) steel which is 50mm diameter by 2" long into what will be a flatter for the power hammer. In my view the 25 kg Power Hammer has more percussive force than the 30 ton Hydraulic Press has squishable force. It seems as though the hydr...

    Both blank length and knocking out the headed rivet have been the trickiest parts in my making of rivet tooling. I made a sort of wedge-driven ejector pin that lets me leave the bottom part of the header tooling in place on the press bolster, but having a second press for that seems even quicker. Good work!

  • @ForgingAheadArtisanBlacksmith

    I enjoyed how you worked through the issues. I am curious as to what happens if you would have accidentally knocked the support block over while you were messing with the bottom die. I assumed people blocked it so the ram or whatever it's called wouldn't slowly bleed off, but they way you said it got me thinking it might fall straight on the bottom die at full weight. Also are you using a tig welding electrode as a scratch awl? I mean it is tungsten I just never considered to use it in that way. Great video, thanks for sharing.

    • @theamateurblacksmith
      @theamateurblacksmith Год назад

      I block the ram so I can replace the dies.... I guess the main reason people block the ram is to save the dies when the machine is switched off. My machine is a 25 Kg, so the ram weighs 25 Kg and drops fairly rapidly when the machine is switched off - I certainly wouldn't want my hand in the way. If you had a 200 Kg ram, there must be even more need to block the ram, but I'm only guessing. I've only had the power hammer a few months so still learning about it. And yes, I'm using a TIG electrode as a scriber....

      I don't think you would get enough mechanical advantage with an Arbor press - They tend to be quite low tonnage. I have a No.2 fly press and that is useless for blacksmithing. You should really be looking for a No.6 fly press or bigger.

      @@theamateurblacksmithI disagree. I’ve got an Adams Bros #2 fly press. I use it a lot for touch marks, straightening, bending, punching and more. Now… I would love to get a larger one, but ya gotta use what you have. As far as punches, use an air quench steel for them…and keep a blowgun hooked up to your compressor next to it for big work like that. Mine have lasted me years.
