  • Tools I make for removing Fencing Staples from livestock fencing.
There are many different tools available for removing fencing staples, many of which I tried and not been happy with, so over a number of different prototypes I came up with this tool.
Initially I was using combine harvester fingers, but they were wide and had a habit of fracturing where the hardened cutting face was.
Then I moved on to using old bits of plough wear parts, with the mild steel on top for hammering on, but the mild steel was too soft to take the beating.
Now the tool is designed so you hit the hardened and tempered spring steel, with the mild steel handle attached to it.
The main handle is made from 30mm x 10mm mild steel - 300mm long, and the spike from 5/16 (8mm) EN45 spring steel.
I knew nothing about farming and livestock until I moved into the country about 13 years ago. Since then I learned a lot about farm engineering, livestock - cows, goats, sheep, and stock control. I've seen how to fit a tyre with a lump hammer, and never to leave a quad bike near to goats.
If you leave any machinery in the vicinity of live stock, expect to find keys missing, wires pulled off, pipes chewed through, and hydraulic pipes leaking!
