2021 a total beginner to pottery, but its been on my bucket-list since school age.
At the ripe age of 50ish I've taken the plunge, a lockdown creative learning curve and I'm loving every moment!
Building my own home studio, complete with wheel and kiln I've been on an incredible journey all-ready.
You-tube was a god-send for learning during lock-down, and its because of the community of sharing potters, I wanted to document my journey and hopefully join up with others in the same position as me.
Learn from each other, and share our successes and mistakes- that's part of the fun!
Hope you're interested to come on this journey with me - one that I think will keep me going way past retirement!

54. Sons Wedding Commission Kiln Opening!!!! Plus pigs, kittens and teddy 'Cress Heads!'
Significant pressure leading up to this opening....months of planning, experiments and preparation....and no further time to remake if I get any fails !!
Our eldest sons wedding commission pieces, 20 mugs all hand-painted, each uniquely personalised and made with so much love...PLEASE let this be a successful kiln opening!
In addition my cameras both cut out before I got to the final shelf, so sincere apologies for that - but I can just share with you there was a lot of squeeling when I got to the bottom shelf! Question is - was it squeels of delight or disaster?
I will be posting some detailed instagram process reels over the next few days, resulting in the final wedding commissions (in sit...

53 : Kiln Opening 'Short & Sweet' experiment results!
Просмотров 85921 день назад
I nearly didn't record this as there were so few pieces fired, but I'm glad I did in the end. Trying out some little pieces for a craft fayre for young children I'm attending, and wanted to see which glazes worked best before I glazed the entire set. Also a couple of experimental pieces I was keen to see how they turned out. I love trying something new, and also don't mind when they don't turn ...
52. Disaster Kiln Opening : Can I save my pieces and kiln shelves?

Definitely not one of my best openings, actually this could be my worst! However this is what makes this hobby so rewarding as the odds as a beginner are stacked against you with so many things that can go wrong, and without the training or experience this is the best way to learn. So many hours, emotions and attention to detail are put in every piece this moment of truth opening that lid reall...
51. Kiln Opening : Mystery Chips experiments and a commission! Love this opening!

If you've recently watched Tutorial 04 you'll have joined me for a glazing session which included applying mystery chips on both a vertical and horizontal surface, using the same base glaze and chips but each resulting in a totally different outcome! Also a commission I've been working on and have to admit the anxiety was heightened just hoping they turned out as I'd hoped. Never fail to enjoy ...

If you've been following me on Instagram you will now by now that my all time favourite technique and obsession is working with chips. I make mystery chips from recycled glaze plus chips in single glaze colours and then apply them on either vertical and horizontal surfaces. The results blow me away without fail every time, hence I can't help myself wanting to work with them more. This video tak...

50. Mystery Chips Kiln Opening - with glaze drippage galore!

A kiln opening from October 23 which for some reason I overlooked to upload. My tub of mystery chips has been growing as I've been collecting and recycling from my brush washing water and I felt it was time to use some on these lotion bottles. Loving the blue waterfall cascades! I've been playing with mystery chips and also lotion bottles, but struggling to get my clay shrinkage right. I've don...

After many requests and private messages I've finally attempted to do a behind the scenes tour of my home studio. Its not super big and I had no idea how to even begin to film and share this with you all - but here's my best shot. We live in a village called 'Far Forest' in the beautiful countryside in North Worcestershire. We literally do live 'IN' the forest with 360degrees stunning scenery a...
48. Kiln Opening Reglaze dilemma - Did I save the Gnomes?
Просмотров 9324 месяца назад
Back in August 23 after some experimentation with Terracotta clay, white slip and stoke and coat I had a disappointing result when the glaze literally cracked off after a glaze firing. They were all heading to the bin, thinking I could not save them, but with some space in a kiln firing I decided I had noting to lose and everything to gain.... so I went in for a refire. Needed to do some consid...

After the most surprising kiln opening I'm not quite over the shock of the success to be honest! However when analysing the test tiles against each recipe and comparing to the results Joe at @Oldforgecreations achieved its clear to see I have improvements to make, and this is where I have no idea where to start! I've no idea if Chrome Oxide and Chromium Oxide are one and the same - which may ex...

I get a lot of questions asking how do I manage to keep track of so many different tests, and create my digital Filing Cabinet. Its feels such a long time to get to this point, and I have to admit the brain is so full of information. I have already learnt so much along the way, things I would do differently, but the worrying part is if any of these tiles will result in a glaze I'd want to upscale to apply to my pots? I do hope so! I will record how I document the process of inventory for my digital filing cabinet of tes...
Lets Make Glaze : 05 Making Mystery Chips Start to Finish from homemade glaze

Whilst on my journey trying to make my own glazes I wanted to see if I could make some mystery chips too, from the washing water. There was so much residue it seemed a shame to waste! Oh my goodness Jeanette your kiln is just full of sweetness, it's like a candy box with all the little sweeties in there. OMG the wedding cup, how stunning is that! I bet the Bride and Groom were thrilled with those and each guest, what a beautiful keep sake ❤❤
Thanks Julia , felt quite a 'cute' opening this time lol. Mugs were all a success thankfully. Hopefully will have chance to edit some reels and footage of the wedding mugs soon. Xx
I must have missed this one Jeanette, what gorgeous little kittens and magnets so cute. Shame about your handle😢 the last pot is stunning, def a shame to put something inside of it😊❤❤
Lol, easy to miss, it was pretty short and sweet! Gutted about the handle crack but it wasn't my usually application technique so lesson learnt, but its currently making a nice paintbrush holder in the studio 😀
Omg how cute are those little planters. The shoes are such a fun idea. I pray all of the mugs came out. I’m sure they did. Can’t wait to see you next video. Thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks Michele. Mugs all turned out brilliantly. Such a relief!! Hoping to post a video of the finished pieces and process. Just need to gets some time to do the editing lol
@@FarForestCeramics I figured they turned out fine. If I remember correctly your son’s wedding was a while back? Or was that the other son? Lol
Beautiful kiln unload. The wedding mug is lovely. Pitty the video stopped, so would like to see all wedding mugs.... Nice day Jeanette 👋
I know! How sad was that! They all turned out great thankfully and I've got lots of footage I need to edit to show you the finished pieces, including in situ in Italy. Just need to edit the footage x
Hi Jeanette! Lovely to see all of your pieces! And great that the mugs for the wedding worked out❤ the one we saw😊 looked great🎉
They were very popular with the children at the craft fayre so thrilled with that result. All the mugs were a success thankfully. Will do a separate post about them and show the finished pieces. Just needing time to edit and post lol
@@FarForestCeramics oh that is wonderful to hear! Thank you!
Hey Jeanette, trace n I here watching! Looove the lid opening n all the gorgeous magnets! The pig is soooo cute! Love the planters n heart feet. Super cute unload xx
Hi both and thanks so much. Definitely a cutie kiln opening this time. The cress heads and magnets turned out to be a great crowd puller at the fayre. Super fun to make too. Makes me wonder how they would work as a mug too? What do you think?
@@FarForestCeramicsI have done cat mugs where the tail is the handle and they are very popular so I’m sure they would be too
@@mudmagic407 Thats a cool idea. I may have a play next session in the studio :)
I loved everything. So much cuteness!
Lol, it felt a cute opening, if there is such a thing! The animal cress heads and magnets were very popular with the kids xx
Those shoes one the pig are just the cutest!! ❤
Do the magnets take a long time to make? I don't know how you get them so even and perfect! And the wedding mugs are just WOW!!
Awh thanks! The magnets were very quick to make. I fortunately have a slab roller so with an even slab. Cling wrap before cutting out they were a dream to make. Glazing took more time buy I love the outcome. The mugs all fired perfectly and I was so relieved. Everyone at the wedding were very appreciative and loved them too. You can imagine my relief x
Hi Jeanette, love everything. Fridge magnets are cute and love the little cress heads. Kids will love those. Wow the S&C planter is stunning. 🤩 Congrats on your retirement 🎉
Thankyou! I do love how the stroke and coat planter turned out. Enjoying the flexibility retirement is bringing although I've no idea where all the time is disappearing to lol ;)
Gone back to where it all began! Nope the palpitations don’t go away do they?? Ww Norse b so pretty! U might be converting me to ancient copper lol
@@mudmagic407 lol, can't believe you've gone back to the very start! Lol
Love the pastel shades on the mug!
Thanks, I was surprised how much I liked the pastel too. So used to vibrant colours, it's nice to see something more delicate ❤
Such great pieces! Can you share what color S&C the oranges you used are? I am looking for a bright orange like the one I saw on your pieces. kind of an orange yellow color.
Hi ,sorry for delay in replying, don't know how I missed this comment. The best orange I use is Mayco Stroke and Coat Tutu Tango. I have the speckled variety. It's a georgous orange and made softer shade when applied with some honey flux.
Awe, those little animal pots are adorable!
Thankyou, can't wait to glaze the rest of them now ;)
Absolutely LOVE the little characters!! They are just perfect!! That stroke and coat cup is fantastic!!
Thanks Michele, great to test out before running the full batch through a glazing session. I did feel naughty firing such a small kiln load though lol
Hey Jeanette oh those magnets r super cute!! The cress heads r cute I can see them w their green heads kids will love those! That stroke n coat planter is stunning! That ribbed shape would make a great mug! Ohhh jealous of yr retirement congrats!! Nat xx
Thanks Nat, always love a test kiln opening, you never know what you're going to get do you. Retirement feels pretty awesome to be honest just finding my self busier than ever lol! Xxx
short but sweet, luvv the pieces....cute kittybowls...happy retirement
Thanks, looking forwards to glazing the full set of cress heads now, given me better ideas of which glazes to use. Excited for retirement plans!
❤ so excited for your retirement. 🎉🎉 love it all !
Thankyou xx
Oh so lovely. I am inspired. 🥰
That's so lovely to hear, Thankyou :)
love those plates!
Glad you like them!
Love all the combos! I have smoke and mag wash so I will give that one a go! Also, could you show your dogs on video! I love dogs.
Its a surprise fab combo, one of my favourites now. Will try to show our dogs on a future video if I can :)
I love those mystery chip bowls, especially the streaks on the sides. I love the effect. Even with the frosted lemon drip. I love them as is. Don't refire you might ruin the mystery chip design. Thanks for showing how you saved the last 2 mugs. I often have mugs that come out like that. My husband gets so mad as he does the dremmeling.
LOL, I just wish I could remove the frosted lemon drip! It is growing on me though :) Took some grinding to save those two mugs, but the diamond disc on the turntable took the 'grunt work' out of it for me, and got there eventually. Fortunately not had too many need dremmelling, and feel for your hubby :)
Oh wow I love the suspense u build at the beginning! Oh I love the refire and the runs on the side I think it’s pretty looks like bluebirds with wings! I do prefer yr birch base ones tho I must say but still pretty. Nice earthenware pebbles haha u gotta laugh right? Thankyou for showing them I’ve often wondered. So lucky they didn’t stick! I have my kiln opening tonight w all new to me spectrum glazes n I’m so nervous they will have all run so I understand yr fear!! That metallic finish is stunning! Those mystery chips mugs r gorgeous I love them! I’m keeping more chips now lol. Do u sort by tone is that why they r so blue? Which I love! Wow that’s some impressive drippage!! Impressive!! Beautiful combo tho. I love my angle grinder w diamond disc would be perfect for the shelf n last 2 mugs ud have it done in no time. Nice save on the mugs! Great unload xx
Sorry for delay in replying, been away for a couple of weeks. I don't try to add suspense I promise, its just a usual potters mind before opening the kiln isnt it lol. Would love to hear how you got on with your new spectrum glazes, I've not tried any of those yet. I dont sort my chips by tones, and I'm always intrigued why there is o much blue in them, as I use a complete blend of colours. I'm guessing the colours may change as I progress, I just have such a big tub that might be a while! I save all chips automatically! The only thing I do is have 3-4 pots of water to wash my brushes in, and sort them by colour tones (of the colour of the glaze before firing) not sure if that has any impact? May have to go in hubbys garage and see if he has an angle grinder I can use for my shelves.... :) Thanks for the comments and feedback, always appreciated xx
@@FarForestCeramicsall the results are in my last 2 kiln unloads including big shout outs to u in #90!! I have another unload coming today too! Can’t wait for your next vid xx
Oh wow I love the inside of the glaze chips bowl. Thankyou so much for the glaze along I’ll be using that technique for sure. Nat xx
Would love to see how you get on with that technique. Always love the surprise element chips bring :)
Hey Jeanette trace has had her surgery so we spent hours binge watching u today so Thankyou! I know this is an oldish vid but I just loooove that birch as a base or glaze chips it’s gorgeous! I’ve made jungle gems chips so I’ve ordered birch now! Lovely unload again. Nat xx
Oh Nat, I feel for you binge watching my videos...you must have had headaches after that...I do talk a lot! Hope Trace is recovering well after her surgery. This glaze combo is one we use in our home which has stone walls inside and very rustic, so it works so well. Would love to see some of your results :)
oh noooo u r one of my favs now seriously! Love yr vids! U can see my results on my unloads incl shout outs to u on #90. Can’t wait for birch to arrive to use my jungle gems chips!!

Yes mud magic #90 has shout out to u xx
I do love your videos 😊
Thanks so much, I appreciate that. Apologies for delay in replying, been away for a couple weeks x

Isnt it just amazing! Tooke me by surprise the first time I tried it!
Hey Jeanette just starting binge watching yr vids n love love love!! U remind me of me with yr chats and how excited u get. So happy I found u!! I could see us doing an u load together it would be hilarious!! Love the funky mug and the handle very cool. Love yr plates so pretty and the matching mugs. Nat xx
Hi Nat, lovely to meet you and thanks for the reply. The excitement never wears off does it lol. Thoroughly enjoying the learning process and journey, its never ending isn't it lol xxx
Also …. Your s/s (I love a s/s) ….. could you share it with me as I can use them but not great at setting them up 🤷♀️ … no worries if not
Of course! I'll just need to rewatch the video to remind me which s/s referring to lol. It was a while ago I posted this lol
It was to do either the glaze recipes etc. I’ve just been taking photos & noting the glazes & clay used in a notebook x
Hi Jeanette. I’ve just found your RUclips channel. I love it. I’m so keen to start making glazes & think your videos are fantastic. I’ve booked into a glazing course at WestDean College (near Chichester) at the end of Oct … it’s not cheap but I’ve been recommended this course. Hoping to get a kiln v soon & just can’t wait. I’ve been potting for a year now I really wish is started earlier. Great work … please keep it going 🥰
Hi, so pleased you've found it helpful. I'm thoroughly enjoying the glazing journey. Interested to her more about the course. Is that quite local to you? I'm guessing over a few weeks? Still trying to find something local for me to attend. Having your own kiln was a game changer for me, excited for you x
The course is a 4 day course … it can be residential but I live only 25 mins away …. x
Where are you based? I’m between Portsmouth & Chichester
Throwing away what is not good is the best....waste of time and the result is never what it should be...
I'm still learning very much, and I find this helps me understand what is able to be saved and what not.
I’m so happy I found you. Your Kiln openings are so fun to watch. And I’m happy that all of us have those good and bad results and that we learn and improve each day from that and from each other 🙏🏻
Hi, lovely to connect with you too! The good results are made more amazing by the bad results we all have. Like you say it helps us learn, improve and learn from each other :)
Well done. Perfect grind
Took me a while, but got there in the end lol
This was beauty and the beast.
I love that description 😂 !
you surprised me...i didn't think those last 2 could be saved...but you did it!! 🎉
I was very concerned Initially but the cookie had protected the foot thankfully. Once I got that off it was a much easier problem. Mind you lesson learnt on that glaze combo for future!
Ohh you saved the mugs so very well Jeannette. Very nice kiln unload 👏
Thankyou, took a long time grinding though! Lesson learnt 🙂
@@FarForestCeramics you are welcome
I can’t believe that you only got reallly drippy glaze on low fire pots!!! I’ve accidentally done this and the pot melted into a puddle!! They look so beautiful after you spent all that time grinding them but please know these can be really brittle! I don’t want to be a downer but just be careful with them. Did you use the same glaze combo on them? They all look sooo beautiful!! My favorites are the yellow with the glaze chips. My chips always seem to be yellow too. I feel like I use every color under the rainbow but they always have mostly blue. Love the video and it’s so nice to see you again. ❤
The low fire clay was the brown ovals. All the mugs were in Stoneware. I just glazed too heavy/low down on the green mugs sadly. The brown mugs were a different combination, Manganese wash and then mayco smoke. I'm still enthralled with Chips and they don't lose their interest with me yet. But why is their colour always blue lol
Wow Jeannette, Still some amazing pieces! love the drips of course, but also the manganese wash! wow!!!
Thankyou. The Manganese wash were stunning, especially as the light caught them. A change from my usual colour pallet 😍
@@FarForestCeramics Yeah iTunes but totally worth it😊
Jeanette---So, you think the odds are stacked against the beginner. Au contraire---if that were true, I'd be home free and NEVER have to say 5 Hail Mary's before I opened the kiln. No matter how long you've been playing with clay, kiln disasters happen! So, grin and bear it. I will say, I have had some of the most incredible re-fire results. Of course, they're one of a kind---but saved! As to the mug sculptures you now have--- mine make it to the dump and I never think of them again. The time required to rehabilitate them isn't worth it. Just look to the next day and not the day before! Keep going. Good luck.
All a great learning curve and enjoying the ups as well as the downs. 😊
Who makes the smoke glaze on the pieces with manganese wash? Thx
Smoke is a Mayco glaze.
So sorry for missing your comment. Yes they are both Mayco. Georgous combo isnt it!
I two part glued my diamond disc to a plastic bat and I pour a little water on it as I run it. Works great to smooth the bottoms
So much easier on the wheel. I add water too, but find spraying it with a water sprayer works quite well as can do that more often at the same time as grinding.
You saved the mugs!
Yeah!!!! After an hour of patient grinding and dremmelling....the will teach me lol
Hi Jeanette, I tried the manganese wash but could hardly notice it, do you make it as a thick wash as thick as glaze? Mine was very watery Thanks
Hi, I added the Manganese wash directly out of the mayco pot, didn't thin down at all. Its a pot called 'Mayco Manganese Wash'. Quite a solid line, but only one coat. then applied the smoke over it.
@@FarForestCeramics Thanks Jeanette, I was making up my own now I know why it didn’t show up as well as yours. Will definitely buy some😊
Those first mugs with the manganese wash are stunning. Lovely shape and glaze combo. Very professional looking.
I appreciate that thankyou. Still very much learning but so pleased how they came out!
Well done!
Thankyou, a close shave with nearly losing the mugs, but still got to salvage the kiln shelves LOL
Gorgeous glazing. Now..... your grinding disc which is attached to the square bat, which clicks into the round bat, how is the grinding disc attached to square bat.
Hi, I purchased the grinding disc (I believe it was a diamond core one) but it didnt come on a bat, it had an adhesive backing to it - so I chose to add to one of my Hartley & Noble bats so I can use in my 'over the wheel bat system'.
I just love your kiln openings! You always have me on the edge of my seat. 😂 Thanks for sharing.
LOL, this one had me pretty nervous I have to be honest. Never fail to excite me with a kiln opening :)
Hi Jeanette, I know you had a bit of a aticky issue with the last 2 but you recovered them amazingly, great kiln opening, Love the refire pieces and the manganese mugs are wow 😍 ❤
Thanks Julia, the refired dishes are growing on me - just wish I dint have the 'unique blob of yellow' on the one LOL. Loving the manganese mugs too - what an impact from a simple glaze application!
Lovely kiln unloading. Too bad about the two last mugs though, they looked so good. But I think you manages to salvage them really nicely. Had a couple of rather difficult mishaps myself, but the advancer kiln shelves and the diamond core sanding disk has been a life saver in my studio. Can highly recommend those shelves (or similar ones from another brand). :)
Thankyou, was so relieved I managed to salvage better than anticipated. Took ages though! LOL I'd love some advancer kiln shelves but currently considering getting a larger kiln so question is do I wait and get them for the larger kiln? Can't remember if this sanding disc was diamond core or another brand, but I've used it so much. May have to invest in more at different grades! Always so many more things to invest in LOL!
Girli love love watching your videos. Its like watching a thriller movie🤣🤣ty for sharing
LOL - hope its not that gruesome :) Hoping to start posting more regular going forwards...just retired from full time job = more pottery time hopefully?
