Lets Make Glaze : 05 Making Mystery Chips Start to Finish from homemade glaze

  • Whilst on my journey trying to make my own glazes I wanted to see if I could make some mystery chips too, from the washing water. There was so much residue it seemed a shame to waste!
I've included the fired images also for completeness.
Not sure what to think if I'm honest. Maybe it would be better to do individual colours?
However what I didn't realise is that I would not be able to make 'chips' as this dries to a powder, or chunks.
I believe you can add something to this to make it 'flake' but not sure what I need to add, how much and do I add it to the residue only?
If anyone has advice I'd love to hear from you. If you've followed me on Instagram you'll know I'm a bit of an addict when it comes to glaze chips when using Mayco and Amaco premixed glazes.
I've applied the 'chips'(well dust) to three different background glazes, all from Joe's recipes ‪@OldForgeCreations‬ Misty Forest, Floating Copper & Ivory.
Hoping to edit the next phase of my glaze making process and upload soon.....it just takes so longgggggg.

I'd have to agree, I think it looks fresher on white. Be interested to see if I can make it with different shades going forwards, fascinating process. So pleased you're finding it helpful, as you can see it's all a learning process for me too!

Fab video Jeanette, always love how organised you are. I liked the results on the ivory best. I think you need to add cmc gum as that is what is in brush on glaze❤❤

Any idea how much you need to add? Never used it before, or where to get hold of it?

On digital fire you can find the ratio for cmc. That will give you chips (not powder)

It is 67grams of cmc added to 1 liter of boiling water. Leave it for a day. Then add 0,43ml of Noval K (a biocide so that the cmc doesn't rot).

@@____Ann____ Hi, I've not been on digital fire before. I'll give that a look, thankyou.

I’ve always wondered how you made these!

Lol, there is a YT tutorial how I usually make them with Brush washing water and using old yoghurt pots. Multiple ways to make! So much fun too!

Oh my gosh how cool is thisssss!! They look beautiful!! I was thinking if you mix the chips with the clear you would get more of a glaze. Then you could try that to glaze with as well as make chips with! I have several jars of glaze from my brush water so I think I’ll try those out today and see what happens.

Brilliant, I use old paper coffee cups to wash my glaze brushes then allow the water to evaporate and tip the dry chips out, I very often place the cups on the shelf in the greenhouse so the water evaporates faster. I’ve sieved the contents of my glaze jar and mixed the powder in to a clear medium and glazed a test piece, just waiting to get enough pieces to run a full glaze firing, it could be an interesting result or a total failure.

@@derekdeed664 that sounds a very interesting test, would live to see the results. Great idea about the old paper coffee cups too! Love how we all have different tips and hints. Love learning new ones!

@@FarForestCeramics I can’t add a pic to the reply unfortunately, I think the inside may turn out better than the outside, I poured the inside and brushed the outside and the inside is showing far more speckles.
It’s such a great advantage being able to talk to other potters online, everyone has there own ideas and we all learn something everyday.
I’ve unloaded a bisque kiln this afternoon and started glazing this evening so hopefully I can get it fired over the weekend.
