  • My georgous sister-in-law Jo lives 2 hours north and a few months ago she visited for the weekend where we had some time in my home studio playing with clay. Jo made some georgous little snowmen and a variety of hearts to string up over her fireplace.
    Over the following weeks I bisque fired them and they have been patiently waiting for the next visit. We finally managed to get together and the glazing session finally happened.
    I think Jo was quite surprised at the many stages to make a piece and the time it takes, and found the whole process very therapeutic, with plenty of time for girly chat as we glazed!
    Jo has always been very talented in crafts herself and has so many ideas what she would like to do with these hearts. I believe she planned to mount her 'Home Sweet Home' on a wooden plaque for her kitchen and the mini hearts to be strung up on a garland over her wooden fireplace. Jo please can we have some forever home pictures when you have finished them?
    I'm so thrilled how they turned out, and even all the snowmen's little noses were securely in place!
    Gutted at what happened to my large platter but lesson definitely learnt there! More Silica Sand needed! However looking forwards to trying my 3rd large platter waiting to be glazed but using the chips for the blue instead of the dots of Mayco Colbalt Wash.
    Loving my bowls and now inspired to make my mugs for the office. Hope to find some time to get on the wheel again soon as its been way too long!
    Thanks for the lovely comments and supporting my channel. This journey of discovery has been enriched by all the wonderful people I've connected with along the way - Thankyou!
    I'll try and post reels of these pieces on my instagram account over the following days - please pop over there if you are interested as I will show the process from start to finish of all my pieces.

    You nailed it with the Mayco purple gloss & blue hydrangea! Gorgeous combo!!! I’m going to make some mugs with that combo as well! 💜💜💜💜 So sorry your lovely platter has a crack! Maybe you could make a bowl to sit on top of it? Big hugs!

      It's all part of the process isn't it, can't win them all. Such a shame though as its so super flat! I'm a liver of Blue Hydrangea anyway but over the purple gloss ...wow love that! Would love to see your results too on a mug!

    Hi Jeanette
    I’m sorry about your beautiful plate cracking. But you’ve have some great glaze results! Thank you so much for showing us the beautiful results with the chips! How clever! I’m testing some glazes for my own dinnerware set and I loved your idea. I’ll be sharing my results soon. Thanks again!❤

    Fab kiln opening. Love the ornaments Jo. Jeanette you are definitely converting me to Mayco, those colours are beautiful! Such a shame about the plate. Not sure if it would help, but I found once in a while a quick gentle vacuuming of the kiln floor stopped the little bumps on the pots - it's surprising what lurks at the bottom of the kiln.

      Great idea, I need to get the vacume out for sure. It's so fine there is a chance I might have missed some. I'm a Mayco girl, always have been as I have more success than other brands, but still keen to try others :)

      Thankyou, the purple gloss was so rich and vibrant, I personally LOVE but I know that's maybe jot everyone's cup of tea 😆 so relieved that I found the solution to a glossy glaze over the transfers and underglaze! Makes such a difference! Hope you've had a wonderful Christmas

    Oh honey I feel sooo bad!! I thought you’d find it much easier to use the silica sand in the shaker but you definitely have to put a lot on for something that large! Make sure to cover the shelf with the sand and then lay your plate down and move it around to make sure there is sand all over the bottom. I’m so sad for you darn it!!! I know you don’t like feet but if you were to put an outer ring on the big plate with a smaller one towards the middle it should be fine but still use the sand. The rule of thumb is to put a foot on anything 8” or bigger. OMG THE SNOWMEN ARE SO DANG CUUUTE! I love that the noses are 3D! Soo to continue my novel, I use alumina hydrate on my shelves and haven’t had it mess up the glaze on a piece but I’m not sure about the silica sand. My gosh I would hope it wouldn’t ruin pieces like that!! The bowl is absolutely gorgeous!!

      I was gutted but another lesson learnt. It was easier to add in the shaker, but I just didn't realise how little I'd put on. I leave these to dry on the bat so I have a super smooth bottom, but thought that it was then too dry to add a foot? Timing is key, and when I'm working full time it's a challenge to play time to be able to add a foot at the precise time I can remove it from the bat. A learning process and something I'm determined to master ....eventually lol. Have to admit the richness of the purple gloss glaze was super!

      @@FarForestCeramics I could tell you were very unhappy. I could tell the rest of the video you were sad. As far as putting feet on thrown things o have no idea how to do that. Sorry. But at least you know now. And my gosh I love the purple as well. So cool they let you decorate your office as you want.

      @@micheledickey4066 I actually wasn't well filming this opening so I think that didnt help. I get we have fails and I always try to learn from them. I'm over it and onto making more with loads more silica sand lol. As for the purple in my office - helps I'm the Managing Director to be able to make those decisions, just try to consider my teams feeling and not inflict purple in the whole of the building LOL, we laugh how the purple ends at my door !

      @@FarForestCeramics That’s so good to hear! I’m glad you got over it quickly! I was watching a class last night and the teacher said to remember that when we make flat things, especially if we aren’t putting a foot on it, that the clay needs to be thicker! I know how you like your pieces to be thin so I thought I’d throw that in here. I pray you are feeling better.

    • @FarForestCeramics
      @FarForestCeramics  Год назад

      @@micheledickey4066 that's a great piece of advice. I wonder if this platter was a little thinner than my previous one? Interesting thought, I'll check that out, thankyou. Got another one to fire so will add lots more silica sand and keep everything crossed. Need to think how I can get a foot added after it pops off the bat, when it's leatherhead.....hmmmmm 🤔

    Tip for platters compress compress whether hand built or wheel work , base must be rather thick and put a weight on, kitty litter in socks and cover the rim to allow it to dry from the middle out wards, rim will dry quicker than the middle if u don't thus cause cracking!

    • @FarForestCeramics
      @FarForestCeramics  Год назад

      Thanks for all these tips. I'm doing all of these apart from I think this plate might have been too thin. I checked it against others and definately lighter and thinner. You live and learn ;) thanks such for the advice. 😀
