Part of me wants to do something like make this as an alternate DCC realm. So, like while playing through a typical DCC dungeon, the PCs get hit by a weird ray (maybe from some MCC AI), and get transported to this world until they're able to work their way out.

coolest thing about JPs adventures you can apply any mechanics from streamlined ttrpgs, or heck come up with your own :)

Old DnD guy here, are there updated editions of this book? I'm intested in the early edition, not an updated current version. Or is the available book unchanged from its first publication? This looks pretty fun. 😎

Just as a side note skalds and friars interacted in real life. It's not like they are from separate timelines, they did overlap.

Personal experience on MCC characters classes. Mutants play more like DCC wizards because their active mutations and glowburn operate in the same way as wizard spells. Pure strain human shaman tend to play more like an artifact/computer specialist, with a tiny list of wetware (spell) programs which flavor their playstyle. A shaman can have skills/wetware that makes them act like a tank, thief, druid, etc.

Some recommendations: Invisible College is an OSR game in a contemporary secret magick / urban fantasy game. Also a good alternative investigation game without lovecraftian horror. Raiders of R'lyeh is a d100 pulp lovecraftian game. For crafting, there's a GURPS article in Pyramid 3/109: Thaumatology V called Magnum Opus that might be something to look at for inspiration for a crafting system.

So you rolled up 4 characters and take them through a level 0 adventure and only 1 survives to make it to level 1? Okay, so if I have 4 players, and each has 4 characters, you are telling me in the first adventure I have to manage 16 characters at my table???? WHAT?!

My group plays OSE but we are about to dabble in some DCC. Looks really fun!

I'm a game designer so they live on my desk and get randomly rolled through the day when I think of an idea or table.

I was able to get one of the Dispel d20's, a set of the Drizzt dice, and two of the Avatar dice. Also the amethyst dragons and all the books I'd wanted. Basically the only thing I didn't get were the topaz dragons, so all in all great haul even if this year felt a bit lighter than previous years.

I haven't played Forbidden Lands, so I can't say for sure. But I think the variation of Year Zero that they use for Alien is a bit smoother...OK, a lot smoother.

Your theory on the Kraken is actually really logical, I hadn't thought of that, but it makes more sense than anything else worth how many different creators have posted it (some of whom refuse to do sponsored content)

1.) I trust you know "Jorphdan" appears as item 38 in the list of wizard names on p.27 of Knave 2e. 2.) Re those Eberron runner-up confidentiality and proprietary IP agreements, the creators kept anything and everything about their settings that they didn't disclose to Wizards as part of the competition. So, thankfully, they were / are still free to sell all the lore they held back (together with reskinned versions of setting elements they submitted). Still, they were hamstrung from capitalizing off their 1st or 2nd runner-up status. And, all of that said, I hundred percent agree that we've likely seen those submitted elements dropped into MTG and, I suspect, in certain campaign books. 3.) Kudos on another great video. I'd bet dollars to donuts that Nentir Vale/Points of Light/D&D 4e base setting is one of the Finalist entries in the old 3.5 setting contest.

Playtesting: (IMO) there are a few stages to playtest a game. First I'd do what you said you'd do, playtest it with friends, letting them know you're testing the mechanics. This is great for eary feedback, getting ideas you'd never thought of. Then run it with random players, at an FLGS, con, or online. This is good because you'll get feedback from lots of different types of players, so you'll figure out what sorts of players you should market the game to. But yeah, finally, you need to put out the rules in a pdf and let another GM run it for their players, with no advice. This can be so hard, but it's important to know if your rules need editing to explain how your system works.

Speaking about terminology, what about mark? as in "on your mark"? It would have nice saying like "just on mark" when you barely succeed, or if you need multiple successes you could say 2 marks or something or "above mark" if some ability needs to roll higher that the set mark. Also "aim" sounds nice, dunno about its clarity though. Also nice show format, exactly what i need :D

Your reaction to Cthulhu is why there are games like Pulp Cthulhu. Its a whole different mindset of play, the idea that the best you can do is hold the horrors' at bay today. Tomorrow is a different day altogether. And its not for everyone, I am not trying to sell you on CoC; its not a part of my regular rotation (Neither is Vaesan, for reasons). But I also don't play pulp or action Cthulhu games because that does not fit with the source material IMHO.

Such a shame about Dicebreaker. They were such an amazing resource for the indie ttrpg industry, and personally posted articles on all our games. I hope the journos there find new gigs swiftly.

Check out the old King's Bounty DOS abandonware game, from the guys who turned it into Heroes of Might & Magic later, then went out of business before Ubisoft took it over, so much of the Heroes formula was created in that game back then.

For Monte Cook: the "white books" are the settings, like It's Only Magic and Rust and Redemption - they all assume you have the Cypher System rules. Of course the rules are open in an srd so you don't need to buy the book for the rules. Numenera and The Strange are self contained games, as are games based on outside IP, like Old Gods of Appalachia and (upcoming) The Magnus Archives.

Sounds like you need to play the Pulp Cthulhu version of the CoC, there's more action and less dying in one hit etc. It's closer to like indiana jones with horror

Another fun fact about Sword World, the people that brought it into being by Group SNE, the company that pioneered the TRPG Replay (Summarized and highly edited session records published as Light Novels and sold in libraries and added to magazines). One of their founding members, Ryo Mizuno also made Record of Lodoss War, a TRPG Replay of his Basic / Expert D&D sessions (B/X was the only localized D&D at the time). Record of Lodoss War also got an anime adaptation which is pretty much the unofficial D&D anime. TRPG Replays and Record of Lodoss War became really popular, in japan you could find them in their own dedicated library section. You are right that with how TSR couldn't meet the demand of TRPGs, while they did release Advanced 1e and Rules Cyclopedia eventually, it was very limiting and late and Advanced was much less succesful than the basic line (This is why Capcom's D&D beat em up is set in Mystara). Due to the high demand not being met, Call of Cthulhu became a way more popular game in japan than D&D and SNE made Sword World, which used the same setting that was established in Record of Lodoss War. The idea of TRPG replays is also fascinating, you could say that they were the proto-Actual Play, and that Record of Lodoss War was the Critical Role of its time. I highly recommend you take a look at the compiled replay of Record of Lodoss War, it's short and you can find it in Internet Archive (Do it before the potential of Internet Archive closing down). It's fascinating to look at it as a good example of how to present an instructional "Here is an example of how to play the game" for your TTRPG in a fun way. It even has maps and character sheets for you to play along or treat it like an adventure module! A lot of new japanese TRPGs have very long Replay sections, some are even presented in a manga (japanese comic) style, and their Nico Nico / RUclips has a Replay scene as well, which are now mostly presented like Visual Novels. Many Japanese VTTs also use the Visual Novel-style presentation with emoting character portraits being pupetted due to the popularity of these.

If you're interested in solo RPGs definitely check out the stuff from Free League! Several of their systems have a solo mode system. I have played around with Strider Mode for The One Ring and it was fun!

The "each class only gets one type of die" reminds me of the DIE rpg, based off of the comic. It was very integral to the design and spirit of the world there.
