Great overview! I've been a bit out of the loop for a couple months, and it's nice to see that the wilderness/exploration/etc systems have already been worked on! One thing I'd add - unless I misunderstood, is that everything in the 2E should all be modular, including the setting, characters, new extra systems, etc. So, even the "classes" I wouldn't call them that, it's mainly just character templates/presets if ppl want to grab a pre-made one vs generating their own. I think, that being the case, what excites me about this 2e is that it adds options, not strictly modifying what's in the 1st edition (which I think it's what makes it backwards compatible).
The artwork and colour for the book look incredible. I get Adventure Time vibes. I'll definitely back this, I've been excited ever since I heard about it on the Between 2 Cairns Podcast
Great vid! Shared this with folks who were on the fence with Cairn 2e who are now all in with me lol Just finished reading the latest pdf and the now complete Vald Setting is AWESOME and we can't wait to explore everything in 2e! I've played a ton of Cairn 1e and love 2e so much more! Keep up the great coverage, folks!
I think there are a lot of "toolbox" games out there like OSE, Cairn1e etc. I think it's just more interesting to now use the osr tools to make more flavorful games.
I've only used into the odd derived games for one-shots, so I really liked how small cairn 1e was. I don't think I will grab the new edition because it seems like it's trying to move more towards being a campaign game, and I just don't see myself ever using the system for that.
I think the game itself is pretty much the same in terms of lightness than the first edition. And I think the added flavor in the backgrounds makes it actually great also for one shots because they give you more to hook on
I sort of felt like I was taking crazy pills with the first edition. It reminded me of someone's joke about La Croix's sparkling water; that it tasted like someone whispered "raspberry" in another room. Cairn felt like someone whispered "roleplaying game" in another room. It was intriguing, but I didn't feel like there was enough there for me to grasp onto. There were vague ideas that seemed good, but I had no idea what to do with it. So, a second edition, one with at least a bit of meat on its bones, might be good.
I just joined an OSE Dolmenwood campaign!
My magic-user almost died the first session 😅

I love implied settings and world building through the presented rules!
My group has already played using the 2e playtest. It's lots of fun. Everybody has some weird stuff to use.
In regard to the question of the setting, I do think that 2e won't eliminate the use of 1e because of this.

Part of the utility is that it’s so simple and it’s up on a website. Even if 2e is spectacular I think it will end up diluting the value of Cairn 1e.
incoming, Knave 2e, Maze Rats 2e, Cairn 2e, Runecairn 2e, Gubat Banwa 2e, Tombpunk 2e ....
I mean, Knave 2e has already been kickstarted and has been wildly successful. I'm waiting on mine to come in the mail.

Yes. Thats the joke.
A barber-surgeon sounds funny now, but back in medieval times they were actually the same profession.
