Thanks for taking a look at it, Jorphdan!
So looking forward to the release of second edition, Ben!
Hopefully you'll have a chance to take a look at the 2nd Edition when it releases soon!
I'm so hyped for Knave2, I'm watching a video about Knave(1).
The single character mashup of a barbarian in the dungeons and healer in the city sounds like an interesting character to play. Maybe they grew up in a monastery and act very reserved while in civilization but when they leave town they cut loose
Im really glad Ben shared this because, you guys were much more critical of the game than I thought you would be… I don’t know if it was the intension but Knave seems to be much more of a toolkit or base on which to build you own hack/heartbreaker, than an all encompassing “game” to be run on its own… I backed 2E on kickstarter and look forward to having and reading it even if I never run it “standalone” … it seems like an invaluable tool for hacking a crafting my own game world which is what I think the hobby is all about
1e shines as a skeleton. A good showcase of Knave hacking would be Vaults of Varn, which is extremely engaging and deep.
Great points! Vaults of Vaarn is a real treasure!
No mention of Knave 2e to consider for the discussion?
Recording a video for that, then realized we should probably make one for 1e and release that first lol
Anyway expect a Knave 2e video soon
I can say it’s cool
Yea! KNAVE! Both 1e and 2e!
Thanks Jorphdan.
Nice! Love this new segment. And knave is an awesome rules lite system.
Knave is my go-to specifically for the ease of adapting OSR monsters and ease of play.
Plus I think Knave 2e is an absolutely MUST-HAVE for the tables alone.
Knave 2e is going to be coming out soon, it's more cleaned up, has art, and has a few more rules. I've been impressed so far.
Tunnels and Trolls is very player facing and one of the first RPGs after D&D originally came out btw :D
Awesome!
I'd note that Knave was written for schoolkids, and I don't think it's as hard to use as you think. You can just grab a B/X module and run it without the fiddliness of B/X.
I thought Maze Rats was written for school kids... but either way you're probably right! :D
@@JocularJunction Both were. Ben Milton was a teacher at the time, and he wrote Knave after Maze Rats in order to use the classic ability scores.
Regarding classes giving personality traits, I think that’s fine if someone starts out as an angry barbarian, picks up a spell book in a dungeon and now is an angry barbarian spell caster. I think this would help new players learn how to role play interesting characters and not just tropes
Oh, brother. Not every game needs to be an entry into the hobby. Sometimes, barriers are actually really important as they provide a goal to work up to.
