Nostalgia Bait, Crappy Sequels, And How They Finally Got Me Too
This one took me a while. I hope you enjoy. I went all over the place in this video in a way that I can only hope you guys will relate to. I don't really get the time to make videos that I'd like, and this channel is a total passion project for me, where I frankly, just write long winded essays about topics I like and don't always do a great job is perfectly marketing it for the platform and viewership.... These pieces come straight from the heart, and sometimes, I find viewers out there that feel similar to me and that means the world. I hope this one resonates. Feel free to subscribe, it helps out a ton. And let me know what you'd like to see next!

Sorry I haven't uploaded in a while... Life has been crazy and I admit, I've lost a little drive for this sort of thing. The obsession with click through rates and viewer retention really started getting to me, when the only thing I ever wanted to do with this channel was ramble about things I love in long winded (sometimes pretentious) ways. Thanks for watching, and please tell me what type of...

I agree Will was given a clumsy jolt into the story. I also found the purple elephants unnecessary and silly. Other than that, all was perfection with the HBO version. Ruth Wilson was supreme as Mrs Coulter. The difficulty I think is that this is not a children's story, despite dealing with the experiences of children approaching adulthood. I've not read the books. I found them dull. But this series was so profound, spiritual and philosophical. Unlike P. Pullman I believe in God, yet his vision as interpreted by the series was closer to my beliefs. Nothing is perfect - but this series comes close. Maybe it's because I came to see it as an adult. The film before screamed of potential, but constantly failed to deliver imho. Nichole Kidman didn't have the savage edge as Mrs Coulter that flowed through Ruth Wilson's sensuous and dangerous take. I guess we'll agree to differ. But I did find Will a little annoying.

Hello 🤗 The best explanation for the unwarranted criticism I've come across is this: if you'd read other fantasy classics before you read Eragon, it seemed like a blatant and boring retelling... If like you and me Eragon was among your very first fantasy books as a kid or teenager, it was new and captivating!

His Dark Materials the TV series actually one of the best fantasy book adaptations ever made. The most underrated show and partially because of that awful movie you adore because of the fancy cast. It’s a bad movie with big names. This is an excellent tv show with lesser names. Beautiful themes and scenes delivered by actors. Worthy to the books.

Even when he’s unlikable he at least to me was funny. Like when he was checking out his own chin I was like bruh this fuckin guy 😂 I kinda loved it ngl. You don’t see many characters like that. And when you do they’re a side character like Draco malfoy or someshit

I've just finished watching the TV show, all 3 seasons. I love fantasy and science fiction. I have never read the book, as my mother tongue is Spanish and wanted to see what was so interesting about this world. To be honest, I watched to the end just because I wanted to know what happened and not because it hooked me in. There were parts of the story I didn't understand because they weren't explained at all but tossed on the screen. (For example, the cloud in season 3, why is there a cloud, when did they decide to send it?) However, on other parts, it seems that the story was in a standstill and I couldn't relate to the characters or the things happening. I think the fault was not on the acting but on the adaptation itself. I've heard so many nice comments on the story that I can't understand how I didn't feel any empathy for Lyra or Lee Scoresby at all. Having said that, I also understand that for those who have read the books, they might find the acting and the particular choices of the actors portrayals different to what they have read and imagined. I found Ruth Wilson to be a force of nature and hers and Will Keen's perfomance to be the only reason to keep on watching, besides Simone Kirby's Dr Mary Malone empathetic and relatable character. In all, even if I admire all the CGI daemons and production value, I feel the retelling of the story was the biggest shortcoming of the TV series, being a total turn off for me. Now I'm planning to read the novels.

You are not the only one thinking that. They failed to keep current day politics out which is always a turnoff in a show also aimed att young people... The feminist/diversity message was extremely on the nose and made it hard to immerse in the story or connect with many characters when you feel like you're being preached to.... It also felt like many actors were chosen to score social points or for ESG money instead of acting skills....

Definitely take a look at Murtagh at some point. It is the latest full size book entry to Eragon universe and tells a much more gritty/ mature story than its original Inheritance cycle counterpart (the choice in character being an excellent driver behind this). I am a rather picky reader (usually a fan of science fiction) and found this book to be one of the few that could keep me up all night reading it because I had to know how it ended. Only two other novels have gotten me to that point: Halo: Broken Circle, Halo: Mortal Dictata.

Just because there's elves, dwarves and Orc like creatures in it doesn't make it a rip-off of LOTR. They don't belong to Tolkein, he probably took inspiration from it but I'd like a critic to explain to me how the story about a boy and his dragon is similar to a story about a Hobbit who journeys with others to destroy an evil ring. I don't understand the Star Wars comparison either, but I've only finished the first book.

I read the novels as an adult around the time of each publication. (I recall barely able to wait the third to finally appear…) Very early on, the only character who had a real-life doppelgänger in my head was Mrs. Coulter - I could only imagine Nicole Kidman portraying her. I may be imagining this, but I swear reading that Pullman had her in mind if the stories were ever filmed. So I suspect that came through in the writing and planted itself in my mind. I’ve never seen the stand alone film, just the series, and I never had a chance to finish watching it. But I loved Ruth Wilson playing Mrs. Coulter. (But this may be just due to her psychopathic character in the series “Luther…” ) Still, weirdly, I keep thinking Marisa Coulter is going to morph into Nicole Kidman. 🤔🤷🏻

I love when people complain about Eragon saying there are no "fresh ideas" as if every fantasy book doesnt draw on some element of Tolkien, who himself drew on other material as inspiration. I've seen people say the same about star wars being a rip off of Dune, again there are plenty of ideas taken from it but it told it's own story with it's on settings and characters. Some people just want to complain as if they are some sort of scholar..

On the other hand , a writer , writing about something will always read similar styles of writeups , and all that comes to mind then he writes , most should be original of course , but things are taken by other writers scripts too it's natural

One thing has to be made clear, no matter if you like writing of Eragon or not, the author is clearly a real fan of dragons and the rider x dragon bond. I have red a lot of literature with dragons in them/dragon riders themes/ect. And this one has one of the best human/dragon interactions ever. Many times when Eragon feels bad or vulnerable, he sleeps with Saphira, hidden under her wings, eventually, they literally become one, even prone to have issues if not being together for longer times. So if you love dragons, you REALLY should try this series, no question.

Maybe I’m a tad of a masochist. I love reading and rereading this series. When I was a teen in my Highschool library these were the chunkiest books they had available and I was an avid reader. Sure the language and vocabulary are difficult and I had to look up some words, (reason I started carrying a pocket dictionary, yes cellphones were a thing but my family was too poor to own one at the time.) I enjoyed the reading difficulty and thought that it’s difficulty set me apart from my peers when I dumbfounded them with words they had never heard of before. I owe those memories to this series.
