Alex Cortright is a writer with a love for learning and discussing story, especially sci-fi and fantasy!
In this video, I took a trip down memory lane through the Metal Gear Solid series, fixating on Guns Of The Patriots, but also touching on Sons Of Liberty, Snake Eater, and The Phantom Pain. MGS was a Christmas miracle for me in 2007 and I hope this story resonates with you in some way. Have games changed? Or have we? There’s magic we leave behind.

Honestly this is one of my favorite video essays I’ve seen in a while; I looked up “dad trying mgsv” because I just got into it after playing revengance for the first time and after playing mgsv I thought it was the kind of game that would make my dad “get interested” like he was when he introduced me to Combat Evolved, or MW2…
This is profoundly relatable for me so thank you for putting in the time to edit and upload this; but more importantly:
I hope you finished the game, I’m omw to 100% on Xbox then soon enough, I’ll move onto going again on steam!

thanks so much for the comment. this was my favorite essay to write and produce and it definitely did not find the audience i’d hoped haha. so i’m very happy to hear someone else could find some enjoyment in it:)

I’m a bit late to the upload but you should know; my dad (and older brother) introduced me to video games starting with Pokémon and a couple racer games and Rainbow Six on the first PlayStation.
Listen, there is just too much to say to you about the things said in the video, but keep trying to make this content that funnels itself through your memories and emotions

Hey Alex, that was a great video and talk. You deserve more views.
I understand you when it comes to The Phantom Pain. I almost didn't finish it either. The game it's just different... More than a Metal Gear it's like the game itself says "Just another day in a war without end". There is an emptiness (a phantom pain if you will) felt over the characters and the game on purpose. While MGS 4 was a love letter to the fans to conclude the saga, The Phantom Pain is more cynical and almost souless on purpose. More abstract and open to interpretation with far less exposition. It's a game about a saga meant to die in MGS 4 but didn't.
    Have you played Peace Walker?

Thanks so much for watching! I agree on The Phantom Pain, which almost makes me want to like it even more... Kojima is so meta with everything that I don't want to write it off as "not as good" because of his own intent with the game...
And yes! I love Peace Walker. I honestly wanted to talk about the handheld games somewhere in this video but they just didn't quite fit into the bigger picture. But Peace Walker is so underrated. I even played the old Metal Gear Acid games. 😂

@@AlexCortright The Phantom Pain was a case of good ideas but problematic execution. I personally like it but let me tell you that it took me a while. I remember I had to take a break of 4-5 months before bringing myself to play until the end. I don't regret it but I'm not sure if I'd do it again. Not because I find the story trash or the invested time worthless but because the idea of working again in Mother Base from the beginning it's not exactly appealing. And the open world nature of the game hurts the story. Because there are actually really good moments in this game.
And the performances of Christopher Randolph (Huey) and specially Robin Atkin Downes (Miller) are probably the best in the saga.
There is also this expanded belief on the internet that the game was released unfinished because of the way it feels but the truth is there is just one mission that was cut from the game meant to be a DLC. But it's finished and it feels the way it's supposed to make you feel.
Kojima tried to do something similar to another MGS 2 although with a bit more flaws. We''ll see if with the years there'll be more love for the game like with MGS 2.
I really liked Peace Walker too. That first ending with The Boss' AI sacrificing itself to avoid a nuclear attack, Big Boss throwing her bandana into the ocean saluting her and Strangelove's speech made me cry a lot. And I like the way Big Boss' PTSD for killing The Boss (and the five stages of grief) is explored. Never played the Acid Games though.

@@theunknownuser9609 yeah i think that was my issue too... i love the idea of MGS open world in phantom pain, but it really distracted from what i love so much about MGS in the first place. it really made already convoluted series into something even harder to follow and more lackluster in execution. Thats where mgs4 shined brightest to me was how direct each act linked straight into each other with a building story.
