  • I saw Dune, directed by the acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve, and I wanted to talk about it. Denis is my favorite working director so I took a deep dive into his filmography to tell you guys why I love it so much. From Prisoners, to Enemy, to Sicario, to Arrival, to my personal favorite, Bladerunner 2049. We cover it all. I hope you enjoy.

Extremely impressed with your thoughts, feelings and commentary of Denis Villeneuve and his art. I was also impressed with your voice and your maturity at such a young age.
I've seen most of Villeneuve's films (from Polytechnique to Dune (Part 1). He is an amazing visionary and I love his work. It was a tossup between Prisoners and Blade Runner 2049 as far as my favor Villeneuve film, except when I watch Sicario again ... and again :). I was also amazed at Arrival, but like Shyamalan's, The Sixth Sense, after watching these two films again (I had to, to see why I didn't catch on to the huge twist in these films), I wasn't as excited on further viewings (although I occasionally go back to them).
As far as Dune Part 1 (yes, I knew for years that Denis wouldn't go into Dune without it being two films), I'm a huge Dune fan. I've read all of Frank Herbert's Dune novels (and Dune 5 times over 5 decades ... plus two different audiobooks in the past two years, because of the Covid delay). I felt if there was one director that could do the novel justice, it would be Villeneuve. He didn't disappoint, although I would have loved to see what was left on the cutting-room floor, as there were some characters and plot points that were rushed or ignored.
And yes, I'd love for you to go in depth concerning the Villeneuve catalog of films. I'll subscribe and watch more of your videos on the subjects that interest me.

Thanks so much for watching and for the encouraging comment! I agree. I heard there was an original 5 hour assembly cut of Dune. Obviously it had to be trimmed significantly, but I can only imagine how much extra footage we missed that would have really helped some of the characters.

I just posted about this yesterday then found your video. I feel that Denis had so much pressure to have Dune be a financial success that he had to compromise a bit so he could get all the films made(im hoping 3). im hoping that now the studio sees that Denis' Dune could do good box office numbers he'll be able to go full artist mode and give us something dark and weird, like the books. I see pt 1 as almost a pure set up.

For sure! I think the biggest thing for me is viewing the film as not the first movie in a trilogy but the first part of a story... which sounds weird/fickle I know, but its almost as if the film shouldn't be consumed without the rest of the parts, or at least judged on its own. I know that's not practical, but still, it just feels wrong.

Am I the only one thinking Dune would be better as a tv series?
