Alex Cortright is a writer with a love for learning and discussing story, especially sci-fi and fantasy!
In this video, I dove into A Little Hatred by Joe Abercrombie, the first in his latest trilogy, The Age Of Madness. War is a frequent topic in The First Law trilogy as well, and I wanted to take some time to analyze how he portrays it. It stood out to me when I read the novel.
When analyzing a new book or author, I try to pick one element that made me think, or a lesson I gleaned from the text that I can apply to my own fantasy writing. Today, it's war.

I just found your channel, have to say this is a really good video and great content overall.
When it comes to Abercrombies writing "The Heroes" is the book that perfectly captures his themes and ideas in my opinion. That overly cynical, realistic but hilarious theme of his is the strongest in that book.

Thanks so much for checking it out! I agree. The heroes is one that perfectly encapsulates what abercrombie does best

This was a real good video, and a very unique take on Joe Abercrombie’s work in a sea of people saying the same things about him. I can absolutely understand why you wouldn’t want to do reviews and favor talking about something specific that affected you about a work and I respect that.
I think you are absolutely right on Joe’s depiction of war, and how his style of writing is not done with the pure intention of being dark and grimy, but to explore the dirtier, darker, more grim sides of humanity that was know exist. Some writers get a little too cartoonish with depictions of Grimdark to the point that it desensitizes the reader and becomes unrealistic. I believe, for Grimdark to work, there must be a little light in it. Some hope, something for the reader to bet on or hope to happen, so that when that dark twist comes, it feels more impactful, as long as it’s written well. Joe does this very well. He never just sticks to one type of result, there’s never a truly completely bad ending or truly good ending. A lot of it sits somewhere on a spectrum and he does a good job keeping the results fresh and unexpected.
Keep up the good work man. I wish I could give you a lot more views because your the quality of your work is too good to go unseen by more people.

Mofo, where do you see hope in his novels? The entirety of First Law can be summed up as "things start shitty, a lot of fucked up and evil shit is done by fucked up and evil people and then it seems to go back to that shitty start but subtly it's so much worse"! It is the most depressing, hopeless drock of shit and nihilism ever written. You should be ashamed of falling for this asshole's con.

Love this video, so kudos for the effort. I think you nailed why I love his work so much. He has complex grey characters and the whole idea of war is complex and grey(no real "heroes") and he has politics that are interesting without preaching a message. These books are for entertainment and I appreciate that. Also if you have ever watched him in an interview he has a very special charisma that comes through in his writing. If people want to know why hes so good at writing characters as real people, its because he understands people. He's self deprecating and in a way that makes him instantly someone you want to have a conversation with not a depressing downer type way. That bleeds into his words and adds that charisma to people, like Sand Dan Glokta, and you fall in love with a literal torturer. Cheers!

There is something wrong with you if you read shit like First Law for entertainment.
