If you liked Shackleton's "Endurance", you might also like Beryl Bainbridge's "The Birthday Boys" - it's about Captain Robert Falcon Scott (who Shackleton served under in 1901-1904 and later feuded with) and his race to the South Pole (only to be beaten by Amundsen by a couple weeks) and his crew's death when their sled-dog rendezvous couldn't find them. It's based on their found diaries and retellings from other explorers. Very tragic stuff.

After liking Endurance so much, perhaps a good follow up would be Alone on the Ice by David Roberts. It's the story of Douglas Mawson's Antarctic journey and rescue after his companions die leaving him alone.

I started Endurance a while back but never got very far because I was having a hard time reading in general at the time. I love the story. I've watched a lot of videos on it. Shackleton was incredible. And his crew. There are certain quotes from him and his men that instantly cause me to get a little emotional. Beautiful stuff.

If you haven't read it, The White Darkness by David Grann follows a descendent of one of the Endurance crew. He is obsessed with Shackleton and builds a crew to go back to Antarctica. Grann finds the most unique stories to tell!

I've seen and read a lot about the Endurance over the years because of the Irish connection to Shackleton, and more specifically, Tom Crean. What is even more crazy to think about is that Tom Crean survived both Scott's failed polar attempt (where he saved one of the other crew on the return leg with an insane solo hike) and was also part of the group that went with Shackleton to get help for The Endurance. Two of the greatest feats of survival in history, and Tom Crean survived both. And to think that he settled down at home in a small village in Kerry, and basically told no one about it for years. The guy should have been a national hero. And rather belatedly, he is now.
It is interesting how attitudes have changed over time in relation to Shackleton as well. When I was a child, the stories of polar exploration tended to frame Scott's failed attempt as a heroic failure, while Shackleton seemed to just get labelled with the failure tag, despite managing to bring his whole crew home alive. Again, its good that his leadership skills have been recognised, even if its took a long time.
Oh, and good luck with the Malayan read. Looking forward to seeing your reaction to it. A few big characters about to make an appearance.
    Have a great Christmas.

If you are interested in picking up similar books to Endurance I would recommend In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick, In the Kingdom of Ice by Hampton Sides, and Island of the Lost: Shipwrecked at the Edge of the World by Joan Druett. That last one is written by a maritime historian, and it reads like that, so if you are more interested in it reading like fiction then I would say just pick up the first 2. All of these had me emotional and crying just as much as Endurance.

House of Chains is actually one of the less intense Malazan novels, with less epic and intense parts than Deadhouse gates or Memories of Ice, and more character focused and world building. Its much more introspective. So you shouldn't have a problem with reading it after 2 intense books. Also like Malazan books are divided into 4 sub books, the book 1 of House of Chains is actually a little experiment by Erickson as an answer to his critics and reads much much different than usual Malazan style. It will be a different experience but totally enjoyable, the book 1 of House of Chains.

I love hearing your review of Abercrombie's work. Best Served Cold was my favorite until Wisdom of Crowds. I'm currently wrapping up Rhythm of War, and while it's been enjoyable, I need to get back to another character driven series. Also while reading the Age of Madness, I couldn't help picturing the parallels to our world. I totally agree with the "completion remorse" when the book/series was finished.
For your interludes, is it possible you would share the recipes? I've never heard of what you were making in the first interlude, but it looked delicious. I didn't think the interludes could be better than those nature shots you had, but I've been corrected.
