This is a tune I did today. A nice little sing-a-long that sums up the 3 games that England have so far played - and what we expect in the next game.

Church Parades Esplanade Scarborough
Просмотров 77Месяц назад
A few old photos of the Church Parades that were popular during the 1900s in Scarborough, during the season. These photos were all taken in front of, or near to, 22 Esplanade, South Cliff. You can see the Crown Hotel in the background. They were called Church Parades because it was usually a Sunday when these walkabouts took place. It is said that a lot of them didn`t actually have anything to ...

This is another edit from the home movie that the late Jack Ellard took . It shows some shots of Scarborough`s Benelux Festival and I am pretty sure it is 1964. I have added some backing music from the early 1960s - not all of the tunes are actually 1964, but you get the idea! Lot`s of the old Scarborough shops can be seen and I wonder if anyone out there can spot themselves either as part of t...

Through The Years Scarborough`s Corner Cafe
Просмотров 6262 месяца назад
The area that us locals called the `corner` is actually Peasholm Gap. The North Side of Scarborough didn`t start to get developed until the 1900s. Access was difficult but eventually a decent road was made and over the years the area changed. The first major building to appear was the Corner Cafe and that was later followed by the North Bay Pool. Most of the development took place in the 1930s....

    Last month whilst on holiday in the UK from Australia, I took my grand kids to Scarborough to show them where I, as a toddler dug on the sands and had cruises on the "Caronia" and "Thornwick Bay" if I remember their names correctly, while an old sea dog played "Anchors Away" on an accordion. Back in the 21st century, the weather was atrocious, but we all loved the day. Thanks for the memories.

      Thank you for the comments : Yes - back in the 1950s and 1960s Scarborough was a smashing place to be -things have changed, mainly due to travel abroad but we still have the fantastic beaches and scenery. I don`t remember the Thornwick bay but we did have 3 boats that were a regular feature of the harbour, taking trips up and down the coast. Coronia, Regal Lady and Yorkshire lady.

    • @stevemessruther172
      @stevemessruther172 9 дней назад

      I started to use them because they pronounced words far better than me - but I then figured that if I do a take with them speaking I can then use their voice as a guide for myself. Well that was the plan :) I agree that the voices are a bit annoying, mainly because there is very little emotion. I used male and female to try and break it up a bit. When I started this series I used what I had available but since then I have learnt a lot and also gained more experience with better software. One big advantage now is that I use a field recorder for my voice. That then gets synced up to the camcorder which allows me to talk without all the wind noise and pops and crackles that you often get from a camcorder/phone microphone. You will be pleased to know that they are being pensioned off :)

    On one of my clips someone - from Scotland - decided to make really negative comments and he seemed to think that I am putting Scotland down. That is not the case, I was supporting Scotland during their games and wanted them to win. They played some awful football and it was a shame for the fans and the team that they did not get to the last 16. England also played pretty crap but we have managed to get to the last 16 - we got further than our friends in Scotland. It`s that simple, there is no malice intended, England played crap and we got lucky that is why we are in the last 16. There have been a lot of teams who have just not turned up when it mattered - Italy for example. It`s football, shit happens.

Great to see the before and after shots of the depot at Gallows Close and the supermarket built where the tracks used to be. @stevemessruther172 2 месяца назад

      This is the `REAL` Scarborough - the first and best. We date back to at least 1000 years ago. All the other places in the world that are called Scarborough have taken their name from our town :)

    • @martinroncetti4134
      @martinroncetti4134 2 месяца назад

      @@stevemessruther172 So the Scarborough that I am from (Ontario) takes its name from the bluffs in your Scarborough. Here's a partial entry from the Wikipedia etymology - "The area is named after the English town of Scarborough, inspired by Elizabeth Simcoe, the wife of John Graves Simcoe, the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada.[5] The bluffs along the Lake Ontario shores reminded her of the limestone cliffs in Scarborough, England. On August 4, 1793, she wrote in her diary, "The shore is extremely bold, and has the appearance of chalk cliffs, but I believe they are only white sand. They appeared so well that we talked of building a summer residence there and calling it Scarborough."[6] Before that, the area was named Glasgow, after the Scottish city.[7]"

    • @stevemessruther172
      @stevemessruther172 2 месяца назад

      @@martinroncetti4134 Bit of a contrast between Scarborough and Glasgow . The limestone cliffs on our coast are a bit further down towards the south - Flamborough. Most of the cliffs either side of Scarborough are made up of mud and rocks that were pushed up after the last ice age ( at least 70,000 years ago). There are at least 7 other places in the world called Scarborough and all really take their name from where I live. The general theory is that we got the name from the Vikings who invaded Britain in the 600s AD (before that it was the Romans) . One Viking is said to have been called Thorgils Scathi - the name Scarborough is made up of two parts - Scar - meaning rock face, and borough - which is an area. We are also told that it was named after Scarthi - becoming Scathi`s Borough. Either way it dates back an awful long time. We were just a little fishing village and it stayed like that right up to the 1600s. In the 1700s the town started to expand and we had a lot of ship building. The big change came in 1850s when the railway came to town. Scarborough ships were to be found all over the world and just up the coast - Whitby - Captain Cook was based. In1793 our harbour was very busy with lots of shipbuilding and it was also the half way point between Newcastle and London. Newcastle and the North East had lots of coal mines. The coal would betaken down the coast to supply London. The vast majority of those ships would pull into Scarborough for supplies and also to take shelter when the weather was bad. One of my friends lived near Niagara Falls and via them I got to know some of it`s history. It appears to have been created 70,000 years ago during the last ice age and has been eroding away to what we see today. It was also 70,000 years ago that the same ice age created all the cliffs and hills around the coast of Filey, Scarborough and Bridlington.

      Thank you :) Yes the road is in very good condition. The times we went it was late summer so the tides were pretty tame. I would like to see what it looked like on a big spring tide with a north east gale behind it!. The main rough tide action - big waves ect - are further out behind the island so that is where the real erosion will be happening. This part is basically a flood plain. The tide tends to build up behind the sandbanks at the low tide mark. It then spills over getting faster and faster as the tide rises. This is why it then suddenly come in really fast in that last hour.
