  • The recent windy weather, and rough seas, have moved a lot of the sand around on the North Bay. Nothing unusual about that - it happens now and then. Sometimes though we see things that have long since been hidden under the sand, old ship wrecks for example. On the North Bay we sometimes saw the old posts that supported the old pier. That doesn`t happen anymore because the posts were removed when the rock armour was installed along the marine drive.
On New Year’s Eve Mary and I had a wander along the beach in the morning. We came across the remains of an old groyne - I have never see that before.
An awful lot of sand had been washed away exposing the remains of the groyne`s.
Anyway - that has prompted me to look back at the old photos. This sequence shows you where those groyne`s were. It looks to me that these breakwaters were not in place until after the marine drive was built. The very early photos show no sign of the groyne`s and by the 1930s they had disappeared. The time period when these were on show and in use would be 1910 - 1925.
