  • Just out of shot is Monkey Island at Scalby Mills Scarborough. The `island` was flattened in 1959 and the land reclaimed from the sea. A new sea wall was built from 1959 and completed around 1962-63. On the re-claimed land a hotel, cafe, shops and amusement arcade were built. It opened in 1966 and did really well for a few years but by the mid 1970s it was not that popular and in the winter months struggled to attract customers. It`s fate was sealed in the late 1980s because a major new sewage treatment works had been approved and was built on the site. When that work had been completed the remaining land was landscaped and the sea life centre built. The sea life centre is still very popular and has now been on the site for over 30 years.
