Casting only watches 4 Seconds!?! Do they hate actors!?! (Spoiler alert: no)
Last week (1/28/25), a post went viral of a Casting Director saying they only watch 4 seconds of an actor's self-tape before deciding on their castability. In today's video, we give you some context, as well as 3 takeaways from this whole debacle.

Thanks for the shout out!
For the algorithm
I’ll be honest - I watched the video and I was pretty disgusted. My first thought? Honestly? This attitude shows in the work now. This selftaping culture is absolutely ridiculous and it’s time to have people fail in the room. It’s too accessible and it’s causing laziness. It’s encouraging entitlement and ignorance. It’s also not helping keep people safe. It’s also a bit rich to expect others to give them more than four seconds “for context”! But I guess the irony is lost here. I’m not interested or panicking about this silly moment and the awful giggling after it. I don’t care what excuses or disclaimers or caveats they have to explain this moment - it’s just a mask-slip moment of how things really are for some CDs. They shouldn’t have been surprised at the response. This disconnect is growing and I do think CDs need to take more responsibility for their bedside manner now things aren’t in-person, just like actors need to adapt - CDs also do need to understand the impact of their communication styles. It’s not Tinder, it’s a job interview and the respect must feel mutual. A bit of experience in taping themselves would likely solve this disconnect but it’s unlikely to ever happen. I think all directors should take a short acting course to build their respect and understanding but that’s another topic.
Appreciate your perspective. I think it’s been a good discussion that clearly has uncovered some stuff from actors and CDs.
Interesting video. Thank you. I find to Be kinda sad that all of our attention spans have been affected by 24 seven access to the Internet through our phones. my opinion, of course and I do love my phone and all of the benefits that it provides. I find that actively trying to pay attention for more than four seconds helps me strengthen my attention span 😎🙌 lol 😂 I might strive for an hour from time to time 👍
Yeah I personally have found it challenging at times to devote full attention to anything for more extended periods of time.
I take no offense to the idea that casting knows what the story needs and can tell within seconds whether an actor is NOT what the story needs. Now, it does make me question why that actor was asked to audition in the first place, but then again, maybe the actor shows up on screen looking nothing like their headshot or shows up on screen with a voice that's not right for the role... idk, but I trust that the cd has done their own homework on the project & decision makers to know which tapes to move on quickly from and which tapes to watch again and again and send to producers. Bottom line, I know that if a role is mine, it's mine. But just like employment resumes, if we don't fit the job description, into the proverbial trash bin we go...
In addition to the reasons I gave in the video, you might be “wrong for the role” because an agent/manager pitched you for the role, and casting was not sure but trusted the rep’s opinion. Then as they watch the opening of the audition, it’s immediately clear the actor was the wrong fit from the beginning.
I saw the clip and honestly didn’t even think much about it. I initially felt that it doesn’t take that long to figure out if someone is right for the role or not. I assumed she’d watch more than four seconds for someone who embodies the role from second #1. I isn’t even realize people were upset until days later. (We actors are so emotional 😆)
Yeah I just think it was the giggling and laughing that was the catalyst for the reaction. Because even if Tiffany was exaggerating, by laughing about it, it came across like she was telling actors how pointless our efforts are past the first beat of the scene. So for that reason, I was in agreement with the uproar. But, at a deeper level, it felt like a lot of actors just used this as an excuse to exorcise all their anger towards this industry and heap that on Tiffany and Rhavynn. At Get Taped, we see so much "hate" thrown at "Casting", even though none of their grievances are actually casting's fault. So in that respect, the reaction felt overblown somewhat.
You don't have to be their little bootlicker and explain for them. They're grown women who said what they said
Bootlicker makes me think of the classic 80s film, Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon. Sho'nuff, the bad guy (for those unfamiliar), tells Bruce Leroy to "kiss my Converse". Classic movie.
@@GetTapedwe just watched that. I had to introduce it to my teen! Love that movie.
I saw the clip & the long form RUclips of the podcast. Your viewpoint here is very unbiased, good stuff. (And hey I see U Kermit 😊! )
Thanks for noticing Kermit!
Our world has become very offensive and people have become hypersensitive. I have auditioned for Raven a couple of times. My vetting of both casting directors I would consider them to be great talents. I would recommend Raven get some to make better promotional cuts for the pod cast. I was just bad adverting. Now I would agree with you whole heatedly, you can look at someone in four seconds and know they are not what is needed. I you have auditioned your own project you have no idea what it’s like. It starts with the look. Thank you for this post.
Thanks for the input!
honestly seeing the interview motivated me to get much better at my opening scene and feelings because usually its 10-15 sec but honestly as an actor we should be in it from the jump. maybe that's just me pushing myself to be better.
Yeah there’s no grace period. You have to be connected to the character and the world from the first frame.
Since we only have 4 seconds, would you recommend slating as the character or at least a bit of the character?
The slate is a different discussion. This topic only refers to the audition. Most casting directors (for tv/film) will specify to put the slate at the end or in a different file. To your actual question of slating in character, it’s a judgement call. There are no “always” or “never” pieces of advice. For instance, if your character has an accent, maybe slate in the accent so that they don’t know it’s put on. If your character is a psychopath, maybe don’t slate in character 😉
@ hahaha! I’ll put down the knife. Thanks
Since we only have 4 seconds, would you recommend slating as the character or at least a bit of the character?
GET TO THE POINT,MATT !!! 🤣
Hahaha!
Love this. It's reality - hard to judge someone else's job. I try to not have opinions. :)
yep....I watched it all. It just got worse???
The IG live, the original podcast, or all of it?
@@GetTaped everything you suggested to watch or read.
as an actor her comment didnt anger me, ive watched many audition tapes and its true, you can tell if someone has "it" within seconds. though, if they arent going to watch the full tape please stop giving us 10 page sides 🤣 why isn't 1 or 2 pages enough?
My favorite comment from the initial IG post was an actor who said “imma start recording only the first 12 seconds of my audition and then turn to the camera and say ‘what are we thinking?’” 😂
This is why I think the response was so fierce tbh. It’s wasting actors time if you only watch 4 seconds but you send them half a novel - maybe this gives away where corners feel cut. Maybe it wouldn’t sting if the tape was only ever one minute long, not seven minutes? Hard to take those particular CDs seriously if they aren’t mindful to what they send and say.
Who got offended?! 1.2.3.. nevermind lol... (btw great job on The Menu.... 👉🔥🕯
Thanks, appreciate that!
Not the first time I've heard this from casting (and previously was told 3 seconds 😆) Honestly found it helpful to be more fully engaged from the start of my tapes, and fully understand that if my look or demeanor isn't what they're looking for then 4 seconds is all I would expect them to stick around for 🤷♀
That puts you ahead of the game, honestly. Even though all casting directors constantly talk about the importance of your opening, it doesn’t always compute.
The optics were terrible (especially after Casting Gate). The optics were entirely preventable because the clip was posted without context, as you mentioned. It was damaging to the SE/Atlanta, which is a larger problem (See: Deadline). Deleting the original post is even worse, because it now removes additional context, only highlighting the follow up conversation, which was a great thing to do. But it's an incomplete picture. That said, casting is under ZERO obligation to watch your entire tape. Those of us who remember in person auditions have also experienced auditions in the room where people tuned out after 4 seconds, began texting, scrolling, jotting notes for something else, looking at the menu to order lunch, etc. The challenge with this overall issue is a)new/green actors take it at face value without additional context, adding stress to their own lives, while b)actors who've been around for a minute, with good training, know that this is means nothing in the big picture of their career. As you say, let's vilify studios. Let's vilify corporations. Let's vilify the CEOs who are making money hand over fist while actors are still getting paid a pittance, by comparison. Let's JOIN the union, so we can have more power in collective bargaining, especially in Georgia, so we can raise the level of pay and benefits, for all.
Amen, Alex!
I think any actor who has been in the business for more than a minute knows in their heart that the Casting Director can tell if they're right for the part in the first four (or ten) seconds, but just don't want to hear it said out loud that only four seconds of our hard work (that we sometimes pay to have taped) might be watched.
It’s a good point that “ignorance is bliss” when it comes to how long they actually watch. Case in point: Cast It (as opposed to Actors Access) accidentally had a feature turned on (this is years ago) where you could see the view count of your video files. It was great the first time I noticed (I had 7 views) but not so good a couple of auditions later when I saw ZERO views a few days after the deadline had passed. Doh!
I only have RUclips so I’m always late to the party on these things but I was not personally offended. Maybe because the type of projects and writing that entices me the most as an actor doesn’t really come from those type of CD’s who post/made the comment but it was slightly embarrassing to see it escalate to the level of having a Deadline article. The SE has SO MUCH amazing talent and constantly fighting to prove that but this is what we get noticed for, Lol?!? And I’m pretty sure up and coming actors heard and/or saw that clip and felt discouraged and insulted but I promise you if they keep on this journey long enough they’ll realize that there are way more CD’s in this industry who do not think or feel the same way. However, I slightly understand where the other CD was coming from in regard to the amount of time it may take a CD to know whether or not an actor may shine in a particular role but the laughter just wasn’t appropriate… because come on ladies it’s not like you’re casting Aaron Sorkin/ Succession type of material, lol (Sorry, Not Sorry)
I wasn't offended. I just thought they got more efficient in how they perceived tapes.
Casting IS efficient, and that's hard for actors to accept sometimes.
I admit, this is the first I'm hearing about it (and ashamed that I'm not more plugged into to SE casting, at the moment). I read the Deadline article via "The Scuttlebutt" (and some comments) and have now watched your takeaway. Definitely gonna check the actual podcast out. Personally, I don't submit and have flat out turned down TP projects as of late, but Matt, you're correct.... Rhavynn is a wonderful person. I'll be curious to see where this is in a month, if it's even an issue at all. Thanks for this.
For better or worse, the news cycle will leave this in the dust (likely). I think it was truly a misunderstanding amplified by social media, and since Rhavynn and Tiffany are learning from it all and were apologetic, they deserve to grow and move on. The internet doesn't always like to give second chances, though...
I read the Deadline article but since I’m off of social media I didn’t see the interview. I love that you said your description of Rhavynn. I miss the in person auditions at TPS because I truly miss seeing this incredible person. As for being hyper-focused, I totally relate. I can lose myself while working on a painting and before I know it, 6 or more hours has gone by. And as a marathon runner, the runner’s high is no joke. When I crossed the finish line at my marathon in Virginia, I had no idea that I had crossed it. The medical staff had to chase me down because I had continued running.
WOW! I love that story about the Virginia marathon. It saddens me when I realize how rarely I experience a flow state. Brooke and I started a Paint-by-Numbers painting on Saturday, and that was as close as I've gotten recently.
I didn't watch the original podcast episode, but I did watch the full IG live they did afterwards, and I'm grateful they brought two experienced actors on to share their perspective and why they were offended. Things taken out of context are never good, but the extended laughing at the comment wasn't just bad optics, it was insulting and insensitive. I'm not going to judge either of these CD's though, especially after the live session they held. We all say things at times that don't go over well, and we wish we could take back. We're all human after all. And although I have thoughts of the pros and cons of self-tapes (which I won't get into here), I've never believed that CD's are against us. It's simply not true.
Yeah, the optics are bad. I'm sure I could grab a sound bite from my own videos that, by itself, would be offensive. Rhavynn should've known how it would look to isolate that soundbyte and put it on her IG. I do think CDs are sometimes genuinely surprised by the influence they have in the industry.
This viral clip is a nothing burger imo. It’s something any actor would’ve learned and truly understood within 1 month of training. I say this as they would understand why casting sometimes does look at an audition for more than a few second let alone 10 seconds. If you’re not already in character or just don’t fit the character, it’s already decided at that point. Casting literally gets hundreds of auditions and are on a time crunch most of the time. And that’s for just one role. Them only looking briefly at auditions for smaller roles makes sense and they look at more deeply and longer for more. significant roles as well. Stating they only look at all auditions for 4 seconds isn’t a fair assessment. If an actor peaks their interest, they’ll look longer for sure and that can be incumbent on the actor and the type of role itself. Every acting teacher and coach I’ve ever had has stated if you don’t catch their attention within the first 5 seconds, they’re going to move on. All this shouldn’t be surprising and shouldn’t be causing such a big commotion. With that said, CD’s have assistants as well with how much is on their table. It’s not all on them and again there’s a time crunch and so many auditions to go through.
Thank you, Matt. You are always so calm and informative and that is what is needed here although I am not sure why 4 seconds is so bad. If you've ever been in the casting seat, you know that 4 seconds is enough for most tapes to get to a No or a Maybe. Then you have more time to spend on the maybe tapes. You have only so much time. IMHO
Thanks, Paul. The issue (last week, at least) was that everyone took Tiffany and Rhavynn to literally mean that after 4 seconds, no matter how good you were, the tape gets stopped. Even if that interpretation was true, they do not represent all casting offices. So as the internet is prone to do, the message got amplified too quickly, perhaps.
Well put Matt and thanks for the perspective. In the old days when we used to go into auditions in person, CDs could tell within seconds if someone was right or not right for the role simply based on how we walked into the room. Did we do so with confidence, what kind of vibe did we give off, what was our level of desperation? IF there ARE any CDs out there who are against us (and if so, it is an infinitesimally miniscule amount) who would want to work with them anyway? You are so right: It is our MINIMAL responsibility to be prepared and professional. If we are not, why would a CD or anyone else want to work with us? It's a matter of mutual respect. In terms of this judgement many actors have of CDs that they are against us, etc., I personally believe it comes down toa level of belief of how everything is connected. I like and appreciate Herr Doktor Eisenstein's observation: "The most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or hostile universe." I have found that those who choose to live in a "hostile" universe spend a lot of time looking for ways to be offended. I feel blessed and grateful that I live in a "friendly" universe where zero time is wasted on looking for ways to be offended but rather, focusing on the infinite amount of opportunities that exist. Hugs to you and Ms. Brooke.
Dan, I love your perspective. And I love that Eisenstein quote. We get to choose how we react to this complicated world, and much of that choice determines our happiness.
At the end you mentioned specificity requires to get into the nuances which will make the video long I got curious about it. Do you have a longer video about that
While there are videos on our channel on these various topics, what I really meant is that going any deeper or more nuanced is not something for a free RUclips video. It would require a class setting where there’s direct feedback.

Great things said as usual! But where’s Kermit 😂
Ah! Good point. Maybe I’ll move Kermie to the office… stay tuned!
Great video as always! I do think I have done more for co star auditions than needed but I think I slowly coming into my own skin. I have to tell myself to just be me and authentic. It is definitely a process that I am still working on.
It’s so tough to hold back. We want them to see how great we are and that we’re capable of so much… but if the role doesn’t call for all that, we do ourselves a disservice by overdoing it.
Love this! Thank you. Keep those tips coming!
For sure! Appreciate you, Carlos!

Well done Matt. It's taken a decade+ to understand how vital these internal components are and have always been. And thank you for bringing to light that these principles don't take the place of your training but are to be sprinkled over your 10k hrs.
Exactly! Thanks, Nelson!
A good one.
Much appreciated.
I have a hard time being small because of being a stage actor but im learning
That can be such a tough transition. It takes awhile to truly convince yourself that you're "enough" just standing there (as long as you're filled with the life of the character, of course).
@@GetTaped yes so ive been just working every day on doing the pre work for a scene and just letting go and fall into the scene relaxing is the hard part for me its like being the first up to bat in a championship game of baseball my whole body is tence
Been there. It's so counterintuitive after a life on stage (where your actions seem to have more purpose, perhaps you even feel more alive) to be tasked with doing so little. It's as if theater involves putting on the character, and TV/film requires peeling back your own layers.
The thing that helped me was to view it as an adjustment that we're used to doing in theater. As they always say, we play to the back row, and we adjust our performance based on the size of the theater space. I view the wide master shot as a small black box theater and continue adjusting from there. Hope you find this approach useful.
All fantastic advice and I definitely checked some (if not all) boxes. One thing though- THE STARMETER IS USELESS?! OMG!! 😂
HAHAHAHA!
How can this channel hasn’t gotten more subscribers 🙄 ? Every video is packed full of great, useful information. Grateful for your works. Love to you Matt and Brooke ❤
Thanks for the kind words! If we knew how to crack the algorithm, we'd have done it... in the meantime, feel free to share this video with your social network 👍🏼
Thank you so much for your valuable information! In the see of acting advice- your channel is truly invaluable and greatly appreciated! Are you giving a Sam Christiansen (sp?) workshop soon as I am still struggling to idnetify my castability.
Our next virtual workshop is THIS weekend, Jan 31-Feb 3. You can learn more and RSVP on our website. We'll be closing registration today, however, because we have to do a lot of prep for each workshop. After this weekend, we're looking at March for the next workshop: www.get-taped.com/sam-christensen
Wow you read me to filth 😂😂. I made every single one of those mistakes and that paired with health issues completely stalled my career for years. But I love watching your videos. I'm actually moving to Alabama and will just be 2 hours from Atlanta. I'm researching acting classes, voice lessons, and some basic dance classes just to start getting back into it and gaining control over my instrument again. No rushing this time!
Great plan! It's hard to balance that passion with the feeling that you're missing out. Stay patient!
I've said many times; the boldest choice is to just be yourself. Whenever I've gotten the note about my "bold choice", I wasn't trying to be different, I just made it my own. And whatever role I audition for, even if it's a five or under, I always think of how I can serve the story, without worrying about doing less or more. I still have my struggles with occasional unforced errors, but I've been at this long enough that I know I can trust my instincts. Be yourself and serve the story. That's what it comes down to.
I will never tire of you introducing Brooke at the beginning of your videos :)
Very wise. Its simple but not easy to do. To be completely comfortable in my own skin is definitely a challenge for me 😅 good for you that you can do that
Aw shucks
Very cool! I’ll definitely save this video on my watch later list for when I actually have enough skill to audition and start to self tape😂Thanks!
Glad it's helpful and hopefully you get there soon!
Question how long do you normally be on set since a lot of your call times are around 6a?
It can vary. Sometimes you're in the first scene and you're done in less than 4 hours. More often, they call you early, but your scene (or scenes) is scheduled much later in the day. So it can be 8 hours... 10 hours... 12 hours. It's very unpredictable, but you should assume that you'll be there ALL day.
@@GetTaped Noted and how often do you see anything beyond 12hrs ha.
Not too often, because overtime gets very expensive for the production. But, I've learned to never make plans on the same day. If you have a class, you're not going to make it. If you had dinner plans, you won't make them. Just cancel your whole day and assume it will be 12-14 hours on set :)
@ haha that’s for your feedback
