  • After a weekend at a Fiddler's Convention (yep, that's a thing), I was struck by the talent of the musicians in attendance. Their talent is so obvious by how they play, and yet it seems effortless. It's much harder to recognize that same level of skill in an actor. In this video, we unpack that concept...

Yes. It can also simply be about how much we love the "underdog" story. It's why documentaries about overcoming defeat are so compelling, and even competition reality shows, I guess.

Matty McCoo!! Incoming, brother....and they launch like 2 pop flies (or maybe lazy spiraling footballs) from my tube socked stocking feet (100% white baseball stockings, as my dad used to call 'em 🤣lol;) to your awesome piano man recital hands🤪. There is so much great stuff here to digest, Matty-truly. The balance of working my ass off to "live up to my talent", then being able to "trust and let go". When it happens (and it has, many times) it's like "Thank you Jesus", and when it doesn't I become a medieval man whipping my back and crying out for a woman to save my sorry ass, you know? As a man of 50 (ahem. I still feel 15 and carry myself thusly, obviously) I can now look at it all with a bit more "F it!" and move on. Sometimes. And I keep my former JV baseball jock tube socks up. You dig, Matty boy? Thanks for talking to me here, man. ⚾⚾JV Johnny

      Hey JV Johnny!
I hear you on that. It's like the difference between hitting the sweet spot on the bat and watching that ball sail effortlessly over the fence into Old Man Withers back yard, versus hitting it wrong and it vibrating in your hands as it the ball harmlessly trickles foul down the 3rd base line and stops at your coach's feet as he looks back up at you with disappointment.

I think getting rid of the noise can be one of the hardest things to do. It takes practice and discipline to give ourselves that time to warm up and then stay there, which can be incredibly difficult while on set with all the waiting and constant, literal noise. And regarding preparation, I've some to realize that it's different for every role, at least for me. Some roles and auditions seem to fit like an old pair of jeans. In these cases, my prep is there, but minimal...I just need to trust myself and let myself sit in it. Others require more prep, and often in different ways. Lastly, I'm always supportive of people who are interested in getting into acting, but if I hear one more person with no experience asking me how to get an agent, I'm going to lose my mind!

You've never had a better opportunity to play the guitar during an episode. I'm so disappointed in you, Matt. ;)

Yeah it seems more and more these days, folks think they need to go from zero to series regular overnight. "I need a reel!" or "I need an agent!" and it's far too early in their journey for either.
