This is exactly the conversation I wanted to hear from 2 people I truly admire and will always listen to. Thank you, Matt and Alex. Alex, good point on the 3 shows that wrapped up. That makes a LOT of sense. Personally, I'm ending the year extremely frustrated. Not for lack of auditions, but for REPEATED "avail checks" (even an email or two saying 'the producers REALLY like you.') for the same 2-3 shows/casting offices, over and over. I know that's a good thing, but man... multiple months, continuously? I also say that as someone who worked consistently through the height of the pandemic. So, yeah... Thank you for this convo. Looking forward to the rest of it. I hope once they all drop you'll consider making it into one full video. -Mike
Mike, man, I feeeeeel you on the avail checks. I think of auditions like blind dates where 90% of the time, the other person ghosts me (never hear back from the audition). But then occasionally, one of them texts you and says they're still headed to the restaurant (avail check), so you hang on a little longer. Then time passes and you start texting to follow up (badgering your agent), only to finally hear that they ditched you for another date awhile ago. So in a way, getting ghosted becomes MUCH more preferable than to get those teasing texts saying they're on the way, right? Yet from their POV, it's a completely different story. And this whole discussion I know makes sense to you, me, Alex, and many actors, but we can't help but give that piece of our souls, which clouds our ability to think rationally about it all...
@@GetTaped Matt, you described it ONE HUNDRED PERCENT! But now, I'm off to VA to visit my mom and SHUT DOWN. Here's to a good 2025 (Right? RIGHT?!?!) Merry Christmas to you, sir! -M. 😄
Matt, I'm so glad we were able to sit down and chat from our POV as journeyman actors. We don't have a crystal ball, and we don't see all sides of the conversation equally, but I'm glad we're able to give some people things to think about and ponder. Look forward to the next one.
You and Alex nailed it on the subject of the relationship with your agent. My previous agent went from being the agent who didn’t mind hearing from you to the agent that didn’t want to hear ANYTHING from you. I suppose growth does that to a person/business. So I saw both ends of the spectrum and everything in between. I look forward to parts 2 through… uh… 5?
The agent relationship is probably one of the most surprising parts of this journey. Actors (at the start of their journeys) think "once I have an agent, everything will finally be right in this world!" Once you get that agent, then you start to learn what you didn't know, and that can be good, or it can lead to ending that relationship. The more I learn, the more I realize I don't know...
Compared to 2022, it's VERY slow. Despite the pandemic, 2021-2022 was a peak for myself (Matt). 2023 got bad starting in the summer because of the dual strike. This year was a LITTLE better, and I did have 4 bookings on major projects, but overall audition numbers are way down.

It was a true delight! And I'm thankful it seems to be already resonating with folks!
