Thank you for shouting out Your Color Guru! As a former personal stylist I worked directly with them and they are such good people! Also there are ai options now but it's just not as good. So thank you for giving actually useful style advice.
Excellent video and story, Jill. It's been over 20 years since I spent 2 days in Versailles, Ky., filming and wrangling a couple of children as a hired extra. The kids were 2 enthusiastic sisters who were so energetic while waiting for our separate scenes to be filmed by the legendary Cameron Crowe for his tribute to his father "Elizabethtow." If you look closely at the reflection of the car window while Orlando Bloom's character is driving into town for his father's funeral, I can ne scene waving and greeting him. In my straw hat and striped tote bag, I am on camera for all of 4 seconds. It took 50 takes of walking up and down the town's sidewalk. Unfortunately, the girls spent as many takes, ended up on the cutt6room floor. However, we have become lifelong friends, including their parents, and I learned how to play the card game SPEED. Yes, to pass the boring time between filming, I brought a deck cards and my Bible. The girls' mother could be found reading "The Ugly American." I saved all ny email notifications and paystubs. It was a great experience. Wonderful memories.
What perfect timing! I've been going down a color analysis rabbit hole on youtube and thinking about what wardrobe tops I could consider for my Sam Christensen essences.
My choices are usually simple: t-shirt, button-down, button-down with tie, or button-down with tie and jacket. And I try to choose colors that I believe work for the character. It's best to wear something that's simple without too many patterns, which can be distracting. In the end, I think you should choose the outfit you would choose for your character and scene, and something that helps you with your performance.
Thanks for adding the note about distracting colors/patterns. I goofed and forgot to even address that! It used to be that red would bleed on camera, but nowadays most cameras are better about that. A bright red can definitely look different on camera, though. White is also a risk, depending on your skin tone and lighting.
Presuming you're not wearing a "costume" for whatever you're auditioning for; I personally figured it'd be best to wear neutral clothing (no loud patterns, logos, etc), that's also in contrast with the backdrop you're taping against, whether it's a bare wall, or a green/blue/gray backdrop.
Q about commercials. I wear brighter colors for commercial auditions. But my background is gray. I used to use a two-sided backdrop but redid my office and painted a wall gray. So I’m doing commercial auditions in gray. How important is color choice (ie blue vs gray) in commercial auditions?
For backdrop I wouldn’t worry too much about the specific color choice. You’ll get slightly different advice from different casting offices. So I’d go with something that you like that looks good with your skin tone. Not too bright. Not too dark.
Hey Matt!! Hey there brother. Lots of food for thought in this video, as in all your videos, man. You really lay it all out, pop it back to the guy (or gal) watching to ponder and think. So I am thinking...of my attire as a card carrying blue collar former JV baseball jock (now middle aged)-baseball tee, Ozzy, Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden tee, sweat pants pulled up to my knees, white tube socks (baseball stockings) (of course!!!) and super floppy sneakers which slip on and off my stocking feet effortlessly. Working class and irreverent, and 100% goofy guy stuff. In fact, I would want to fire off 1, then 2, of said floppy sneakers for you to catch, and just be in my stocking feet. Well, it's a character choice lol 🤣🤪. But more like that's just my authentic, internal life as JV Johnny, regardless of what I am wearing. But damn! I would love to play that slacker guy, even if it means I leave that audition KO'd and carried off over the security guy's right shoulder (I'm 150 lbs), my wise ass stocking feet limply dangling, sneakers in his free hand lol 🤪. You are hilarious and authentic and I always enjoy your feedback, Matt. Best to you and your wife, JV Johnny ⚾⚾
Thanks for the tips! Good stuff

Agreed! It’s a great idea to have some trusty wardrobe pieces that are not too “loud” in color, pattern, or logos.
Your videos are very informative and helpful- subscribed! Thabk you for the knowledge you are providing!
