Even though I had years of experience in the theater, when I started pursuing on camera work I took every gig I could get. Most of those projects, and my performances, were terrible, but I learned something every time and made some relationships with people who now have successful careers, and those relationships have paid off. In other news, I'm in the final stages of developing a class I want to teach, I'm meeting with someone early next year to get my short film off the ground, and I'm making plans to level up and find coastal representation once I have a new reel.
😂 I feel personally attacked. I wrote a movie and I'm writing an episodic project. But I'm nervous. Every time I bring up either project, everyone says I should start working on filming them 🙃. That is terrifying. However, this must be a sign. Because last Monday, I literally ran into a film friend at the park who was looking for a writer 😅.
Hmmmmmmmmm... might just be the "perfect" time to take that leap. While I can't give you the final word, I'll share more insight about producing Roger, Espionager. It was terrifying to not know if it would all come together, but then the greatest rush when we did film it over 9 days. That said, watching it slowly run out of momentum as we couldn't get into many festivals (not many have "pilot" categories) or figure out a path forward, was very painful for me. As you know, when you write something, there's an attachment you develop that makes it so hard to not only produce it (because now it's "real"), but then to let it go when it doesn't succeed the way you hoped. I'm still mourning the "loss" of Roger, and it's been a couple years. But that's the life of the artist, right? We feel an unquenchable desire to have our story be told, but it's so risky to share a piece of your soul. If you commit to filming, enjoy the process. Every bit of it...
@GetTaped Thank you! The (because now it's "real") part had me stuck for sure. But I'll keep writing and do more research on how to get it out. Hopefully, I'll find the info that will keep me motivated to complete it.
Thank you, thank you and thank you again Matthew for posting this video! I cannot tell you how the part about "having the low tolerance for risk and getting paralyzed trying to gather too much information" resonates with me. I've been on the Atlanta acting scene for a very long time and have booked a few roles here & there. I've also dabbled in writing and producing. Finally wrote and produced a couple shorts which never got completed for one reason or another (mostly funding) so they were pretty much abandoned. Then wrote and produced a music video (just for fun and the learning experience) and posted on RUclips back in 2016. One of the hardest things I've had to do ruclips.net/video/1d3wbc51fc8/видео.html but I was so dang proud that I actually finally was able to finish a project! Yes, I know 2016 was a long time ago by industry standards but life happens, but I still have some ideas that I've been putting down on paper and want to continue writing & producing. Watching this latest video from #Get Taped! was so relatable and so on time! You guys are awesome and thank you for all that you do! God Bless!
This is excellent! Thanks man! I’d love for your advice on what to research when you’re switching markets. I’m moving to Albuquerque in the spring. I’ve already got a few ideas of what to do, but I may have missed a few.
Beyond stuff unrelated to acting (finding the right neighborhood, roommates vs. living alone, etc), I would check the SAG-AFTRA website for the ABQ local to get a list of franchised agents. That will be a good starting point as you look for representation (even if you're non-union). Beyond that, I'd check the local film festivals to see if they do year-round events. That can be a great way to get plugged in and network.
Such a great video! I really appreciate the advice in this one. It certainly resonates with me however, I still think I’m so green that I just need to put in the reps in classes for the next year or so before I worry about anything else. But for me less thinking about about scheduling classes and more actual scheduling of classes :-)
You are not alone! We're all so complex when it comes to this topic. I think everyone is impatient (or impulsive) in some respects, and probably too cautious and fearful in other respects. Perhaps at times we experience BOTH! Being impatient for progress, but fearful to take the necessary steps...
Thanks, if I didn’t overthink, I really overthink actions now. I understand how you are trying to help people and you do. But this submission can cause more over thinking and or creat overthinking. This is the only submission you’ve created I didn’t watch all the way through. Maybe you should have thought it through a little more😊. I look forward to you next post. Don’t wait too long, but don’t do it too soon either. Take your time but not too long….. Full disclosure, I am a fan and probably will always be.
Help me understand what makes the difference between now or next year and when you finished the pilot as to moving forward with potential distribution.
It's really that I have no one to shepherd the project past this point. I have zero business acumen when it comes to producing, and with no one else that I've been able to find to come on board as a producer, there's no path forward unless I cut the budget for future episodes by 1/10th and keep self-funding.
EXCELLENT!!! Such wisdom. I'm in the middle slightly towards the slower side. This video reminds me of: Faith without corresponding action is dead. AND, zeal without knowledge is not good. **Re projects that appear dead & gone... I've learned: Just because it hasn’t happened yet, doesn't mean it won't happen. ** Sometimes, foundational roots of wisdom are growing to stabilize you/us for great heights. Higher heights require deeper roots.

Sounds great, Fred! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Matthew, was that you on the "Red one" movie? I swear that guy looked like you 🤔
Yup. Check out this video: ruclips.net/video/KZFW8QQ-hf8/видео.html

Love all that. Thanks so much!
