Are you putting up outdoor Christmas lights? Getting mine ready.
I wonder how many more years I'll be able to get up on the roof and also use my 16 foot ladder?

Thanks Buzz - you just revved up my craving for some donuts from a shop with pirate in the name on the east side of Columbus - but I’m about 3 hours away. Hey, we’ll get there - central Ohio trip coming within 2 weeks. Cheers!
This is all to familiar! I've been retired for going on 4 years and 70th birthday. Other than my work, which had me traveling hundreds if not thousands of miles. To include South Pole Station Antarctica for a few months. As a crane operator my work was pretty much solitary just watching or hearing signals for the crane action and a lot of the time not even seeing who's giving the signals. Even during breaks in a lot of cases it was sitting on the track or catwalk of the crane, sometimes got to the break trailer depending on site situation and even then pretty much a listener, not a talker. I stay in touch with a few folks, a couple more than others. One guy, I chat with daily, he was a rigger that had been crushed on a man lift that had a safety switch malfunction, he was in a hospital for just over a year and 37 surgeries. He's about 150 miles away, I'll drive down and help out when he needs. Another fellow who was an equipment operator about 1500 miles away, we chat about once a week. Enjoyed watching this Buzz, keep it up, stay busy best you can, I have found baking and cooking to be a great challenge. I still do all my house and vehicle repairs and such even though it sometimes hurts like hell. (USMC Vietnam tail end) If it doesn't hurt your not trying.......sometimes gets me some PT time, Physical Therapy that is!
Keith got ours up Saturday when it was nice out. Had snow flurries here today.
3 months of grey Cleveland skies coming. Used to it but not happy about it.
Six months into retirement and I haven’t gotten lonely yet. Lots of rewarding hobbies and toys waiting for me. Hardly ever need a watch. Neighbor acquaintances are enough for now. 🙂
Beat the steelers!!
Couple more hours!
Nice to have the time to really enjoy decorating
That's for sure!
My dogs are my friends. PEOPLE SUCK
Dogs are the best!
Been retired 22 yrs. I live off grid in the high desert of Arizona. My 3 dogs are more valuable to me than anyone I know or ever will know. Matter of fact I dont want to know anyone . Its like this, God, wife and dogs, my horses and then my Harley. Nothing else matters.
It's all about your joy! You made the path that you wanted and you're doing great! Thanks for the comment. Buzz
Off the grid and you have RUclips? 🤔 hmmm
@@burdettheithold1534 Starlink goes anywhere.
I spent the one-time $ and bought a high quality TV antenna. It was $125 and totally worth it. I get a HD picture that is way better than cable and costs me nothing per month. I get all the local channels- for everything else I stream. Cut that cable cord now if you want to save a fortune over time. Don’t buy this cheap $50 ones that promise a lot- they are worthless
Where did you mount the antenna? Attic? Outside on the chimney? I've been thinking of doing that but my wife likes her cable.
@ on the roof. I just used a small square of plywood to hold the base down. I don’t like drilling holes into the roof. It’s heavy enough to just sit there and not move. That also allows me the ability to rotate it to pick up the best signals. You do have to scan for channels several times to see which position gets the best reception. Best thing I ever did- the picture quality is stunning compared to cable. It’s over the air HD- cable signal is compressed and cannot compare. Like I said I get all the local channels and then some at Zero monthly cost. Just the original outlay for the antenna and you should also get high quality cable line. It’s cheap. I kick myself when I think of all the months I paid for cable tv. What a waste. Used to pay $65 for cable and $80 for internet. Now it’s just $80 for internet. Huge savings
I am a C-9 guy. I always hang my Christmas Lights late October. They do not get turned until the day after Thanksgiving. They stay on until January 5Th. It takes me a day to test and install the lights. Maybe some of the viewers can send pictures of their lights. I would love to see your display. Everyone have great Thanksgiving.
I can do a video of all the lights if people send pics to Buzzretirementgarage@gmail.com Have a great Thanksgiving!
You need to go to Fragapane Bakery.
On my list for next time!
I love the old-time lights. Brings back many great memories. I've seen some of the new Costco LED sets that you can permanently mount and change the color output and patterns for any holiday. Pretty cool!
LED was a great invention since they draw so much less power. The C9 lights I'm putting up only draw .6 watt versus 5 watts for an incandescent. But I like the muted color of the old style. I once put blue LEDS on my Christmas tree and Hopkins called and asked me to put them on a dimmer. Waaay too bright! People are doing the permanent mount, and it makes sense as we age.
@@BuzzRetirementGarage Yes, some of those LEDs can be blinding. I remember hearing on the news that a Cleveland area man was asked to dim his Christmas lights. ;-)
Not to sound too scrooge like, but I do enjoy that portugal does not have a tradition of outside lights. Retiring here got me out of something I never liked to do. 😅 Keep up your great chronicles of your retirement journey
Interesting. I didn't know that.
You have great mustache 👍 I also noticed that you have quite a prominent Adam's apple...when you shave, do you move it some how to keep from nicking it? It is a handsome Adam's apple 😁👍

Retired at 55. Now 70 and very few, if any true "friends". Think that's fairly normal. But being single for 30 years, I'm used to not having a lot of contact. I don't get lonely, I get bored at times. Living in Montana, there's a lot of outdoor activities except it gets a little chilly in the winter... Ride motorcycles in the summer, taking care of the property, and house keeps you busy. The "golden years" is a myth, but "youth is wasted on the young" is very true.
Your words remind me of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
@BuzzRetirementGarage Don't know that one. Looked it up. Guess I'll have to watch it someday...
Buzz, it's good to have you as an acquantice. Thanks
Same here! Welcome!
I used to put up lots of Christmas decorations inflatables, lights, blow molds, all sorts of stuff. but always had a battle getting any help sticking it back in attic of garage and snow burying stuff on lawn we have switched over to mostly led lights hung in tree
I never did inflatables because I don't like seeing them laying down in the daytime. I'm going to do a video next month of a guy who puts out dozens of blow molds. It's really awesome. He's getting older so hopefully he'll do it this year.
I like it best when no one is around.
Some people definitely like that. No drama.
This is So helpful! Thankyou!
Many of us share a similar experience.
Put my lights up last weekend before the weather changed where I'm at. One thing I did at my home is I installed eye hooks along the soffits. It makes is so I just have to string the lights along the hooks and it's very easy. I also have a really nice extension pole with a special hook on the end that lets me do most of the first level from the ground. I really only need a ladder to get to the highest peak over my garage. I love being able to do 90% without being on a ladder. I totally suggest getting a nice extension pole with a hook on the end for Christmas lights. It's a big safety improvement.
That's a great idea and as the years go by I have to think smart like you did. Thanks for the tips!
I like the old look. I'm from 1960. Thanks for the info. Canada 🇨🇦
Good thing is these bulbs won't be hot to the touch.
Everything you said is spot on! I retired a year ago at 55, I definitely spend too much time on the couch lol but the freedom to do so is absolutely awesome 😉
You'll adapt as time goes by. Everyone changes. Best wishes to you in your retirement!
Boston Cream is my favorite too!
I got one and it was good!
From another Buzz. Join a gym,get a part time job, learn to play pickle ball, golf. Been blessed with many friends through my love of Harley Davidson. My wife and I go to Florida in winter and have another group of friends we ride with there. You get what you give. We live in an over 55 community and have neighbors and friends our age and with of some of the same interests. I don't belong to any clubs or social groups but still have many contacts. I've been retired since 2001. My family lives near and are a joy to me. Good luck Buzz you're young enjoy your life!
Thanks for the comment! I'm doing good. I was busy all summer! Starting a bathroom remodel tomorrow. My wife doesn't share any of my hobbies so I miss having someone to hang with.
It's such a mood boost to drive down the streets and see the holiday lights! I settle for letting my tree lights show in my picture window since I don't have an outdoor outlet.
That works too! Luckily the neighbor across the street puts up a few so we have theirs to look at too.
Hey, everyone is doing the same…I put projectors on the house lots of laser patterns. Beats the ladder every year.
I'm not a fan of lasers but watch, in a few years I'll probably have them. Lol
We had a blue spruce that dad had to add a string every year those are the lights we had and the paint would chip off of them !
The best bulbs had inside paint!
I haven't put up Christmas lights since 2007 when an ice storm hit and my grandmother died. 😢 Just don't have it in me anymore.
I hear you. Nothing wrong with that.
You should buy a droan. That way you can shoot a picture overhead when you turn on all your Christmas lights and watch the rest of the town go black.
That's funny. My drone would get caught in a tree!
When our old house was new, way before LED, I used to put lights on it every year. After the trees grew up and filled in nobody could see them anymore so I stopped. At our current house we only have one neighbor who would see them so I don’t bother. I do enjoy going to town to see the neighborhoods lit up and I appreciate the effort that it takes.
Makes perfect sense. I saw your video on the transformation. Really nice! Everything looks good together! The porch area and can lights came out perfect. Super job. I'd take our the cracked concrete and fill with stone. In 5 or 6 years when the money builds up then concrete it. Or not.
@@BuzzRetirementGarage thank you, I’m glad you like it. For now the concrete is better than stone. The part that kept tripping me is gone. I have lots of stone too for comparison. I’m hoping that if home building happens to slow down the price of concrete will come down and the contractors will be hungry enough to make deals. I’m willing to wait a couple of years to see what happens.
My outside lights are already installed... I even got a remote to turn on and off ............
I try to put everything on timers. I do have one remote though.....if I can find it. Lol
Hey friend!! What a nice surprise to get into RUclips tonight and see this video. YAY!! As for the bathroom "tomorrow, I promise!!" . . . liar liar pants on fire! I'll believe it AFTER you've started. And now tomorrow with forecasted volume of snow, good luck with that! (LOL!). I don't do outdoor lights. My balcony doesn't have an outlet and I don't want to fuss with battery powered with remote control or a timer. But I LOVE seeing them outdoors and on balconies. Hopefully my next apartment (moving to Indiana at the end of April) will have 1) outside outlets and 2) better sealed patio door. Mine has AWFUL drafts during the winter. I use A LOT of the clay caulking. Not a fan of the large colored CLEAR bulbs. Kinda defeats the purpose of going for the retro look. I'm loving the solid larger bulbs though!! But when I HAVE put lights outside, I'm always the little white lights ~ love the classy look. But I LOVE seeing colored lights (retro OR small/"Italian") on other people's homes. Good luck tomorrow with promised start to the bathroom. ;-p
It was wonderful weather here yesterday, so I got a good start on putting lights up. First time I've ever been able to do it mid-week... what a treat!
Many more "firsts" coming! Enjoy retirement!
Love the TruTones. Exactly what we had for the outside lights on the house and on the tree. I'm pulling my lights out this weekend and getting them prepped aka untangling them from the ball that I shoved into the cabinet in the garage from last year.
I try to keep them untangled but I'm not very good at it.
I don't do christmas, but my wife murders a tree every year and brings it inside. She cuts it on our property. She has over a thousand to choose from. She puts it in her piano room. No lights on it, but she has lights on her indoor bushes in the living room. Nothing outside, but we live at the end of a private road with no traffic - zero. If you like doing it, go for it.
Send me one of your pines!
@@BuzzRetirementGarage No pines, just spruce and fir. She only uses fir trees.
@@todddunn945 Fir tree's are the best!
@@BuzzRetirementGarage Yup, fortunately we have quite a few on the property.
Hi Buzz!! My husband doesn’t like putting up the lights so we have gone to nets lights… he just has to throw them over the bushes 😂😂
Those really aren't that bad and they look good. If they had them in vintage look I'd get some.
Truly enjoy your videos Buzz. Hope to run into you at Menards someday! Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to and yours. 🎄🎄
I may go early Friday afternoon because according to the website they got some more C9 vintage sets in stock.
We need some of you out there that have bright ideas to tell Buzz where to put his too brite lights. I'd say turn them on during daylight hours.
I could wrap them around the chimney since I don't want Santa to miss us this year.
I thought Michigan only has grey skies for 3 months (and longer) 🤪. I envy everyone that can do Christmas lights. It’s been 16 years, but we used to be “that house” that everyone had to come see. Too much detail to explain the sudden detour our lives took with my husbands health, but we can’t even have lights on our Christmas tree or anything indoors that is sparkly or has lights 🙁. So to everyone, enjoy & appreciate them! Buzz, looks like you need a garage heater.
Sorry that he's dealing with that. I may drywall the garage and heat it. Baby steps. Next year I planned on siding it since the paint keeps chipping.
Tell me again, where does that turkey rod go?!
Russell Casse said it best.
I put up lights around my front porch that look like icicles. I add blow molds (elves and Santas) that have lights too. I typically use white swag lights with red bows but decided to change it up a bit this year. I do like the lights that you are using. Be careful out there.😊
You're set up sounds nice. I like all lights! Lol
I like the Tru Tone bulbs. They have a V shaped led filament that mimics the old incandescent bulbs better. The Menards ones are ok in opaque but I agree with you on the clear ones being a bit piercing. I had one bad Tru Tone bulb out of the box and they sent me out a replacement same week no charge.
Another Tru-Tone user! Cool. The Tru-Tone jewelltone lights in C 7 are failing me badly. I'm throwing in incandescent as replacements. That's for outside. Inside they are great. The C9's for the roof are holding up really well. Hey, you never emailed me last Saturday!
@ I have not tried them outdoors. I do have some generic C7 leds I’m tying outdoors this year. I will let you know how they hold up. Thanks for the reminder on the email!
raining here in Michigan as well...we put our lights up, not turned on two weeks back, when it was 45 degrees.
Last year I got an early start but not this year. Where does the time go!
Looks like you have it under control. I bet it’s all going to look great.
I'll send you the finished pics!
Aren’t those vintage lights dangerous? They get hot and can catch on fire? I use a few fairy lights and those show up well ( outside ). Amazon has them in many holiday colors and lengths.
No. These vintage look lights are LED and only draw .6 watt instead of 5 watts like an incandescent. The best part is they are a perfect color match to the old GE or Westinghouse bulbs.
Okay. I was just thinking about Mrs. Buzz’s safety.
I’m actually half way through my washroom reno too lol, old vanities now at the dump & new ones ready to go in. As for Christmas lights I’m jinxed , stack them away carefully and the next year 1/3rd don’t work 🤷♂️ Let’s hope it’s a white Christmas, makes the lights look so much better Happy thanksgiving Buzz & mrs Buzz
I buy the rubber washers for the large bulbs and install on the roof and gutters vertically with the point up, base down. They've held up well. Do you celebrate something similar to Thanksgiving? Maybe eat pavlova?
@ Canadian thanksgiving’s in early October, most of us had a nice juicy real turkey & the couple of vegetarians had fake turkey lol
Lovin those vintage bulbs Buzz! I was doing the same today. Hoping to get a jump on that cold front that's hitting you. Coming my way in eastern PA. Didn't get as far as I wanted but nothing like freezing your knuckles off to get in the spirit! Have a great one all!!!
Can't believe I'll have to wear a coat again! Our bodies need a week to get used to it but we'll be fine. Have a great Thanksgiving!
Too early for us but probably right after Thanksgiving. Cold snap coming through Ohio but it’s getting late fall. I don’t like these short daylight days. Christmas lights will lift our spirits 😊
If the bath remodel goes fast I should have all my lights up by December 1st. We'll see!
