@@BuzzRetirementGarage Yea, crazy! My mother didn’t want a cell phone. We all chipped in & got her one. She kept telling us she would go to a pay phone if she gets stranded 🤦♀️. Now we can’t get her off of it!
Great topic today Buzz, handled in your positive and sensitive way. We are doing fine. I love technology: it enrichens my life and keeps me on my toes. Going with the flow is the path of least resistance and an interesting journey. There is always our friend the search engine, Google, Duck Duck and the like to point us in the right direction when we hit a bump. With the help of RUclips plumbing tutorials I changed all the radiators in my flat this year saving me a tidy sum along the way. Self-dependence is the way to go; only when possible and advisable of course. Keep up the good work.
That is a positive aspect of technology. Being able to access information by experts or craftsmen is very much appreciated by me. Thanks for commenting and glad you got the radiators changed! Buzz
Buzz, what you shared is so true. I have been wondering how we can keep up with the technology as we grow older. My mom’s wasn’t able to set up her smart TV and it took me hours to figure out how to set it up. It’s frustrating and very stressful for the old people.
We'll have to figure it out. I know when I bought a new computer 10 years ago, I transferred the data myself but if I get a new one now, I'll let the experts do it.
Hey Buzz!! Thanks for the chuckles AND the groans. I think a lot of us can relate to at least some of what you said. I experienced the same thing . . . eye in the sky knowing there was something in my cart . . . but it was my bag. Stores just keep eliminating jobs ~ though I personally DO prefer self-checkout! All I can say about the technology (phones, computers, software apps) . . . thank God for Google!!! Have a great week!
I retired at 65 from a tech savvy job. I taught myself all of it from 2013-2024. It's simply mindset, or curiosity/desire to learn new things in this milieu. It's really not tough. I was by far more tech savvy than the majority of my team. Two in their 50s, two 40s, maybe 1-2 30s, and 6 in their 20s. Curiosity, time, and patience. You can do it, Buzz!😅
That’s my problem I don’t have an interest-I mean zero interest-in technology. Wish I did. 64 yr/old single lady. Will say though, Buzz your positive attitude is so welcome and encouraging. That said I’ll leave on a better note and say I do figure out what I need to to get by! Thank you Buzz…
The information that is available at our fingertips is astounding the key is harnessing the knowledge. My problem at my age constantly misplacing my keys to the information highway 😳. Thank goodness for my grandson! I used to just freeze water for ice cubes now it also refers to my Tv,I-pad & phone🤯give me time now I can freeze all my electronics 😂Wife won’t let me near the computer anymore,(Smart Girl)! 🙏 To All In Harms Way Of Milton. All The Best To You & Mrs Buzz! Be Well Be Safe & Stay Blessed.
Here is a tip for us older folks; Only try to adopt the technology that works for you (for example I love self checkout). For things you don't want to accept/endure, go back to calling. It may take a bit longer (we go nothing but time) but I have found the real people are very helpful. More technology is coming day by day so try to build on your expertise a little more each day/week/month.
I'm an engineer, 61 & retired 5 months ago. I find digital tech challenging mainly due to constant changes & new tech, poor application design (just not logical, or functions buried deep in convoluted navigation) and poor instructions (instructions don't keep up with the changes in the app).
I think you're correct. I can give you a list of things I encounter daily that make no sense to me. Even youtube is screwing up vloggers by adding their version of AI. The coding or application design as you describe it causes problems. It can be frustrating! Thanks for commenting! Buzz
True story: I was invited to an after work happy hour last summer. Bellied up and ordered a beer. Bar tender puts it in front of me and I put a $20 bill on the bar. He says we don't take cash. I sez OK and reach for a credit card in my wallet. He sez no, you can only pay with your phone here. I said WTF, no. I pushed the beer back at him and left. You can't make this stuff up. I fear for our future.
We bought my grandparents a new microwave (this was back in the 80's) - something they had never had before at the time. They were so unsure about the whole thing that they used to unplug it at night before they went to bed. They didn't want radiation leaking out while they slept. And don't even get started on when the Internet came around and we tried to explain email to them! The technology curve was much worse in some ways for the previous generation.
@@mikedr1549 Indeed! My father used to make me so nervous and he did fall victim to a scam. There was a specific generation that probably should not have “tried the internet” 😱
I would agree to that! My father in law would call me to come over because he had the TV remote so screwed up. Fixed and a few days later the same thing. Strange thing is now that he passed (Dec 2023) I'm glad he had those problems.
I am a scientist and I find technology intimidating. I seem to have a knack for doing the wrong thing. I sometimes use self checkout but not with coupons. With coupons it needs human assistance thus defeating the purpose.
It’s interesting….I’ve been hearing about the scan n go. I have to give it a try. Sometimes technology is a bit confusing. Eventually I can figure it out ❤️🌵
The scan and go is fairly easy and I've had no trouble with it. Set it up before you go to the store and if you need help, they'll take care you. When I shop at Costco the lines go fast because they staff correctly.
Hi Buzz, one reason I stepped away from my management position & retired was the increased demands of technology to do the job, I was what you would call an ‘Old School’ boss and I found the amount of computerised hoops required to jump through before making decisions wasn’t worth my time & energy anymore! Ps. I’m so thankful for Canada’s healthcare system, it’s been excellent whenever I’ve required it!
@@liddlekiddle1962 thanks & good luck with yours too. I think if you’ve crunched the numbers & can afford to retire, retire and live happily stress free!
In January the cost would have been under $300 and I would have met my deductible for the year. $175/month plus $89/month for a supplement plan covers it. I understand in Canada you wouldn't have those charges.
I can certainly understand your frustration. I deal with new programs that I have to use for my job all the time. I hope your CT went well.. Glad you got it done.
Saw where the local library has security classes/information. Believe Senior Centers (am I that old!!?!! Yes) offer classes. We all need to keep learning.
Hey Buzz, I hear you. If I need IT assistance, I call my son. My daughters are tech-savvy, too. All 3 of them tell me I need to get with the 21st century. I do the least I can when it comes to tech. I prefer to avoid going through scan and go. I like talking to the cashier!
Oh Buzz, we are all in trouble. As an over 80 year old, it is ok to be left in the dust. Mowing my grass today, it should be the last time and next year will plan to pay someone else to do it. Keep up this fun stuff and don't sweat the rest. 🤩
I am also 64, I can only imagine what technology will be like in another 30-40 years, of course we won't be here still, but I kind of wish I could see what it would be like. I am sure it will be amazing.
@@BuzzRetirementGarageit was in a short - if you click on her home page and then on her shorts - it’s a couple of rows down - she’s wearing a navy blue polar fleece type jacket and is standing outside in front of a window.
i remember building my own computers but i hate the constant changes to software you learn one system and then they change it. The stores that are pushing the self-checkout i won't use it at all it is a pain and annoying to use wont go to wawa anymore since they want you to order food on a touchscreen nonsense instead of just telling them what you want
I remember after covid when Taco Bell put in the touch pads they refused to take an in person order. Probably due to the remnants of covid thinking. Protecting the employees made sense but it was weird. You will use the self checkout stores eventually. I remember saying I won't pump my own gas......
Keeping up with technology is the challenge, even among those of us who used to work in tech. I'm stuck frequently having to put on my “support” hat to help the husband with his iPhone or iPad. He's made such a mess of his computer I refuse to attempt fixing that!
I retired four years ago at age 58, from a 20+ year career as a tech support analyst. I can easily manage all my on-line accounts using a $100 laptop running Linux, and a $100 phone running Android 13, and I can scan my groceries if I'm under 10 items, or make small talk with the nice checkout person pretty much anywhere I go. But you may need to move to a nice small town like mine for this to work. 🙂
You may not be old enough to remember but people used to fill our cars with gas! The forced automation (self-serve) started way back then. The people who say they will never use self-checkout or scan and go are fooling themselves. It will be another example of forced automation. (self-serve).
I have to force myself to keep up to date, but now I'm kinda liking learning this stuff. Switched from Iphone to an Android even! Exciting! 🤣 Now I want one of those folding phones.
I haven’t decided on paying through phone. I know many people are going to that. It’s hard for me trusting doing it that way. Debit or credit is my usual way of paying.
I'm not afraid of this because we have choices of our purchases for our wants. Most disturbing is school taxes and local taxes keep going up more than we can control
I had to get a new Internet modem today . So could upgrade I wasted 2 hours setting it up . Lol . But Abdul helped me out LOL . I have had arguments at stores. I will not cash my own stuff out I do not work for them .
@@BuzzRetirementGarage The Internet was a pain but getting the Blink security system back online was hard . I heard that T Mobile Internet is pretty good .
They shut down all the self checkouts at our local Dollar Stores. I wasn’t happy about it, but in reality it doesn’t work without proper monitoring. The honor system no longer works.
I do not mind the self-scan stores but recently did not bag every thing and put one item under my arm to carry out. A store employee came up from behind me and stopped me and everyone behind me and hollered “did you remember to pay for that bag of chips.” I told her indeed I had paid and extended my receipt for her to check, still holding up a group of people behind me. She would not look at my receipt…that made me mad.😡 Now I try to bag even large items.😂
Our store has a person to help the people doing self checkout. Another person at the door checking receipts and packages. They could be regular cashiers and the problem of theft would disappear. As for technology: today I printed a score sheet for a game. The first one turned out right. The next three printed out with gigantic letters and off the page. Never did figure out what to do. Age 75. Husband didn't have a clue either. Ehhhhh.
I think eventually all stores will be self-checkout only. Just like gas stations when they went self-serve. What are we going to do? Not get gas? Same with the stores. We will succumb or we won't eat. Lol
A lot of what they call "technology" is simply badly written software. Personally, I don't use the self checkout at the supermarket. I am willing to pay extra to use a checker if it comes to that. Setting up a new e-mail in my Spectrum account is also very complicated and can't be done from the normal login account. Why they make it that way I have no idea. I predate most "tech". Heck I still have a rotary dial phone at home which actually works to call out and receive calls. That said, as a scientist I was pretty much at the leading edge of actual technology for my working career, but I draw the line at cumbersome, badly written software that exists only to save some corporation money.
Software could be part of the problem. We've gotten to the point of not allowing humans to interact with us any longer. Look online. How many times I've heard that.
My Costco had a really good scan and go system, then out of the blue they made everyone start removing items in the scan and go and manually scan each item (so going backwards). What I was doing in less that 30 seconds, is now a big pin in the rear.
It takes a while to have the right number show up 3 to 6 weeks. It is not the carrier but a database. I dealt with this a couple of years ago with my name showing up on his phone.
Hey Buzz your only as old as you feel. Remember when you didn’t have cable TV. Or internet and only used cash….. I do …….. there are lots of tech classes and groups out there especially for seniors as lots of things are trending service wise online. Apps for parking apps for insurance apps for almost everything. You can teach an old dog new tricks. Haha. Good times in retirement.
Our son is my wife's and my tech support for our cell phones and laptop. I have an MBA and was a systems project manager in my prior work life. Now, while I could solve tech problems, I'd rather not spend the time on it. An intricate problem, that might take me some time to research and address can be, in normal situations, more easily and quickly solve by my tech-savy son.
I agree. I don't have that go to person and I eventually figure it out but it takes me so long. Yes I'm retired, but losing a half day staring at a screen can be frustrating.
I went to a store in Japan.. all we did was to dump everything into a box a it automatically scanned and totalled it immediately.. it took less than 2 mins to pay and leave.. it was easy
Hey Buzz, I was just thinking , I’m not real keen about all this self checkout because a lot of people lose jobs. I try to use a checker When ever I can to justify their job. Sam’s and Costco are so damn rich , l feel we owe it to the cashiers to keep them employed. This idea of a basic income is not good for the human spirt , people need purpose in their lives . Take care
When the lines at Sam's Club are deep, and done on purpose in my opinion, the Scan and go is very convenient. At Costco, the lines go very fast since they have the people.
I tried from October to January last year to get a simple quote from my employer who is my healthcare company for an eye surgery I was having done. NEVER got the fair business quote. I ended up getting the procedure and only then did I find out the cost. We need invisible pricing for all medical. This is crazy.
@@BuzzRetirementGarage that’s insane. That price difference is probably one I would push back on. Not that they would do anything, but the cost of medical care is out of reach for so many and this is one reason why. I’m sorry that happened. It’s nice that you shared that with all of us so we’re are on the lookout. Thank you.
Tim Cook 64, Bill Gates 68, Huang Jen-hsun Nvidia 61, Tim Berners-Lee 69…. Most of the major step innovators that built the current IT world are our age. What frustrates me as someone who has used IT intensively all my career is how crap and user unfriendly a lot of it still is in ways that cause exactly the problems you experienced. Working with many younger people I don’t think age is the factor, many of them have the same or worse struggles with tech. I’m sure you will conquer these in your usual calm manner.
Interesting point. There are talented exceptions to everything but I think you're correct that some software development needs to be better. 10 more years and it won't be my problem anymore.
The ASCII character 39 is an apostrophe ('). Did you use that in something you typed? I hate the questions about phone numbers, cars or addresses 40+ years ago. Try Buzz'sGarage
I am 69 yrs old. I dont understand AI. I dont know how you can tell if something is AI generated. Kind of frustrating. But my parents who have passed never had cell phones or computers, so I guess we r doing somewhat ok. My job was on a computer so that how I learned what I do know.
I have recently been getting calls from people who want to "help" me save money and want to know if I have Medicare. My response: "Honey, you will have to get in line. You're the fiftieth caller this month." They hang up.
Good thing for my 7 yr. old granddaughter. There isn’t anything she can’t figure out. When my wife tell her nothings happening, she say gram you have wait it’s downloading.
I got blamed for losing hundreds of my Aunts pictures that were on her hard drive. They called me back to the house and you could tell they were agitated. Where's the pictures? Um, click on the file named Pics. Lol
After nearly 15 years, my wife still can’t differentiate between a text message and an email on her phone. 😂 When she tells me she got a message on her phone, I ask, “Email or text?” She just looks at me with glazed eyes, shrugs her shoulders and says, “I don’t know.” 15 years!! 🤣🤣
I dragged my feet with both text and email on our cellphone. I absolutely love to do both! My kids feel the same. I could never go back to talking on the cellphone.
To me technology is just another tool like a wrench or a drill. It makes things easier. It just takes a little longer to learn how to use software than a screwdriver.
I actually go to the scan and go at Costco it’s much faster and usually w/o a hitch. Always somebody there to assist when needed and so far help with heavy items like multiple waters coming over before even asking for help. Costco is a top notch store hopefully it stays that way a long time to come. The upper management has been very employee/ people friendly and that’s just smart. Landline? What’s that 😅. A.I. dealing with drs office visits making it so difficult to talk to a human I really don’t like it at all. It’s seems you really get the run around trying to figure things out. That I’m having a hard time with. So I avoid it as much as possible and I think that’s the insurance companies scam. Wear you down until you just say oh the heck with it. IMHO
Costco does an excellent job and always seems well staffed. I agree, hope it stays that way. I did the check in BS for a doctors appointment and they ask "are you here" and I clicked yes. Walked in and sat down. Couple minutes later the receptionist asks why I'm there. I said I checked in on line. She replies you still need to check in with me. Really? Whatever.
In some cases, yes. We will be forced into things. Rember full service gas stations? That's where it started for me. Forced to pump your own gas or go without.
It's not easy to keep up at 42 either, and I work in IT 😂 . And I'll be damned if I'm going to Costco or any store to scan and bag my own groceries. I'll wait the five minutes NOT to work.
Costco is always quick because they have plenty of cashier's and "baggers". Sam's club is the opposite. They practically force you to scan your own groceries or you'll stand in line a long time.b
My 15 yo grandson has to lead me on phone questions. My pet peeve is making a call and answering 20 options when i use to hit just 0 to get a person...ugggh.
My daughter is 39 and is a technology sales Manager….i have a yahoo email account, she told me. DAD, NO ONE uses yahoo anymore. Oh well. We’re showing our age. ❤️🌵
I had an email with my cable service for 20 years. xxxx@cox.net. Recently Cox moved the email to Yahoo servers. I had no choice. What's the best email server?
It’s all slipping away as I either don’t care or refuse to pay to keep up with technology. I’m just hoping that in the future it will be programmed to be more intuitive so I can join in again if I want to 😂
Did your country go with self service gas stations at the same time as the USA? That's were forcing us to do things became evident to me. Hope you're doing well!
@@BuzzRetirementGarage Yes, I can’t even remember being served at a petrol station. I like being served by a human being and having a little chat. Supermarkets are no fun now ☹
My problem is younger people automatically assume that I do not know how technology works. I was on the ground floor of personal computers and worked IT for years. The explaining when I don't need it and the way it comes across is insulting. Try as I may to kindly correct the assumption, I get attitude back. It is not pleasant.
Ouch! +$200.00 more at a location nearer to you. That'll teach you not to assume anything from our medical groups... They get you every time. :-)) You live, you learn... Best wishes...
I'm an engineer because people are way too unpredictable. Always embrace technology, but beware of the dangers of people... "Danger Will Robinson" PS some computers communicate in ASCII, some in Hex, others in Octal etc... Look at the ASCII table and you'll see that 39 (hex 0x27, octal 47) is the code for apostrophe. "But why" you say... because people are unpredictable. Now being a logical person, can you tell me WHY, if adultery, divorce and abortion are sinful and bad for society.... Why is it legal?
Looks like you used an apostrophe in the name. The apostrophe is a special character for some computer software. Some computer languages use the apostrophe as a marker for the beginning and end of a string e.g. 'hello world'. Problem is, what if you have an apostrophe in that string, then the marker functionality of the apostrophe now gets confusing 'hello's world'. The string doesn't end after the o in hello. So systems get creative and use alternate forms of the apostrophe so it doesn't get confused as a marker 'hello&39s world'. But now the software that needs to display that string needs to know this special trick was used to encode the apostrophe and guess what - the software doesn't know, so the display appears broken. As a person in IT who has an apostrophe in their last name believe me, I've had to deal with all sorts of issues where software was not written to allow for the apostrophe character when it is not used as the marker for the beginning or end of a string. Computers are dumb. Software developers can be dumber.
I thought that could be the case but I took the apostrophe out and saved it but it still shows incorrectly. I need to take some time to try more things but after a while I just say delete the email address and move on. I'll give it one more shot. Thanks for your thorough explanation!

I wonder how long I'll spend fixing this email? Lol
Those three attributes are keys to success.

There is so much info. Amazing how much we can learn!
Good advice!
That's the scary part. When vendors start refusing cash or card we enter a different world.
That is crazy!
Thank God I have my to girls around to help navigate the tech age, plus my son in law who worked for Google in Europe. My bases are covered.
Excellent!
Thanks for today's thoughts
Thanks for watching!
New technology = brain work. Good 😊
True.
I am a scientist and I find technology intimidating. I seem to have a knack for doing the wrong thing. I sometimes use self checkout but not with coupons. With coupons it needs human assistance thus defeating the purpose.
The Sams Club scan and go has been a pleasant surprise. No issues or glitches at all. Wish it was that way for everything.
At 62, I feel the same way and can predict that will be one of my reasons for retiring, too! Best wishes in retirement.

I like old school too. Computers quite often give me fits. Not to mention printers and passwords quite often don't work.
The password thing is getting ridiculous. Every app needs a password. Crazy.
I can certainly understand your frustration. I deal with new programs that I have to use for my job all the time. I hope your CT went well.. Glad you got it done.
I should send you the scan file when I get it for a second opinion?
Happy to help out!!!
Saw where the local library has security classes/information. Believe Senior Centers (am I that old!!?!! Yes) offer classes. We all need to keep learning.
I'm not that far out of it to need that but my wife did take computer classes years ago at the Senior center.
I’m 65 and I do the Sam’s Club scan and go, and I love it. Very easy.
It is a time saver.
Good to have that "tech support" available. Lol
It's a wonder we survived having to rely on pay phones once we left the house to run an errand.
That was freedom. Pagers ruined that then cell phones put the exclamation point on it.
Oh Buzz, we are all in trouble. As an over 80 year old, it is ok to be left in the dust. Mowing my grass today, it should be the last time and next year will plan to pay someone else to do it. Keep up this fun stuff and don't sweat the rest. 🤩
It's all good. Some things will pass me by, and I guess I'll just have to accept it.
I love using the scan and go
I walk past the dozens of people in the check out lines like a King. Lol
@@BuzzRetirementGarage the advent of AI helped convince me it was time to retire 😅
You have to keep your mind working and keep learning new things as you get older or you turn to mush.
I agree!
I am also 64, I can only imagine what technology will be like in another 30-40 years, of course we won't be here still, but I kind of wish I could see what it would be like. I am sure it will be amazing.
Might not have to wait that long. In 10 years things will be so different.
Hi Buzz! You got a nice shout out from Jane at Frugal Queen in France!

i remember building my own computers but i hate the constant changes to software you learn one system and then they change it.
Consider it a challenge!
The times are changing. When the Internet first came out I thought it wasn't good for much. How wrong I was.
That’s rough, over $600 with insurance. I really hope you get good results back.
Me too.
Ooma works good with call blocking. There is an ability to block spam calls and only recognize numbers in your contact list that you have vetted.
If I got the Premium but I'm too cheap. Have basic.
Companies are having robots controlling us! 🤣 Get in line and roll with it... We love technology and take advantage of it as much as possible.
You may not be old enough to remember but people used to fill our cars with gas! The forced automation (self-serve) started way back then. The people who say they will never use self-checkout or scan and go are fooling themselves. It will be another example of forced automation. (self-serve).
@@BuzzRetirementGarage Oh yeah, one of our parents still have never pumped their own gas. They still have some stations around that pump your gas!
I have to force myself to keep up to date, but now I'm kinda liking learning this stuff. Switched from Iphone to an Android even! Exciting! 🤣 Now I want one of those folding phones.
I like doing it if it works. My wife has a folding phone. 8 years old. Lol
I haven’t decided on paying through phone. I know many people are going to that. It’s hard for me trusting doing it that way. Debit or credit is my usual way of paying.
Credit card for me.
It is here in Netherlands exactly the same, scan & go ❤❤❤
Interesting! World wide!
I'm not afraid of this because we have choices of our purchases for our wants. Most disturbing is school taxes and local taxes keep going up more than we can control

Our local Dollar generals closed self- checkout because of theft
Dollar Generals are the #1 places to rob it seems. Wonder why?
They shut down all the self checkouts at our local Dollar Stores. I wasn’t happy about it, but in reality it doesn’t work without proper monitoring. The honor system no longer works.
Yikes on the medical costs. I hate feeling taken through my insurance, and I always feel taken.

Some employees aren't trained as well as they should.
Old school here!!
Me too but I'm trying to keep up!
Our store has a person to help the people doing self checkout. Another person at the door checking receipts and packages. They could be regular
cashiers and the problem of theft would disappear. As for technology: today I printed a score sheet for a game. The first one turned out right. The next
three printed out with gigantic letters and off the page.
Lol
Spent last week camping were there was on internet service. Makes you realize how dependent we are on technology. Good or bad?
I can do without it. I did it for more than 25 years.
I've always been on the cutting edge of tech but in the past few years it's hard to keep up with it all.
Love it Buzz. I remember back in 1979 I was in college for auto TEC. we thought electronic ignition would ruin the industry! WOW
Isn't it strange?
I work it out eventually. Sometimes I get frustrated by the amount of time it takes.
I really like scan and go. It allows you to get in and out quickly. Costco needs to replicate
Costco has the people to get you out fast. Not Sam's club.
My Costco had a really good scan and go system, then out of the blue they made everyone start removing items in the scan and go and manually scan each item (so going backwards). What I was doing in less that 30 seconds, is now a big pin in the rear.
@@grumpychoi interesting. Surprised they screwed that up.

It's going to get worse. One comment said they wouldn't take cash or credit for his beer. Had to use his phone.
Call tech support and press 1 for heavily accented English.
I find myself struggling more and more all the time. Everything must be encrypted 😂🤣
Sometimes that does happen.
I went to a store in Japan.. all we did was to dump everything into a box a it automatically scanned and totalled it immediately.. it took less than 2 mins to pay and leave.. it was easy
Amazing what can be done.
Hey Buzz, I was just thinking , I’m not real keen about all this self checkout because a lot of people lose jobs. I try to use a checker
When ever I can to justify their job.

Glad of that.
I'm an engineer because people are way too unpredictable. Always embrace technology, but beware of the dangers of people... "Danger Will Robinson"
PS some computers communicate in ASCII, some in Hex, others in Octal etc...
People are definitely unpredictable. I'll keep working on it.
Buzz
