There are so many (retirement) videos out there, but they all are about finance. Finally someone talking about ‘normal’ things and retirement. My last working day is in 4 days. then 3 months using my leave days and then early next year it’s officially being retired. I’’m looking forward to retirement. I don’t see it as the end, but more as the beginning of a good time in my live. I’ve made a digital mindmap with everything about my live: social contacts, finance, health, returning daily, weekly and periodic activities, benefits for the elderly, available services for the elderly, my many hobbies, (astro)photography, public transport, what to bring when I go on a trip and so on. It’s not only fun to compose all that information, it’s also d*mn handy to have all that information in one place. So yeah, after 47 working years I’m ready for it… Thanks for the video 👍
New subscriber here - thanks, Buzz! I love your positive vibe and the messages you share. Also, that yard behind you is so nice. After leaving decades in tech, I'm figuring out what to do next. Realizing how much work defined me, I found I neglected hobbies and interests. Now, I'm working on "self-rewiring" to discover my next purpose.
That's the great part about retirement. For the first time in a long time you're your own boss. Give yourself time and don't force things. Take advantage of a few things you never tried before. You'll be fine! Thanks for watching! Buzz
Congrats on your 1 year anniversary! Enjoyed your story about leaving on a Thursday and taking Friday off...nice move! I can totally relate to your line of thinking...too many emotions to deal with all at once. Also the reduction in stress as you said is a definite game changer. And learning how to be my own boss has taken awhile but think I'm getting the hang of it after 2 yrs 😊. Keep well.... Go Browns !
When you worked with people, most of them almost 20 years, and knowing you'll rarely ever see them again, it's tough. I'll admit, emotionally I just didn't want to deal with it. Too many sad life events in the past three years that I'm still working through. Didn't need another. Buzz
Business attire is one I don't miss. The time of deadlines are over as well. What will breakdown next was a big one for me! Everybody's emergency is not mine anymore!!Planning the day and getting none of it done was another one for me!! Maintenance supervisor is not glamorous either!! Don't miss anything about it! Getting to do a lot around the house is wonderful!! Cutting my grass early in the week so I don't cut it on the weekends!! My wife has told me to quit doing yard work as much, people think we are getting ready to sale. I could go on and on! Thank you for the thought process of why we should be glad of so much time on our hands!!! As always keep them coming Mr. Buzz!! Love the new lid!!

Congratulations Buzz on year anniversary of retiring. I wish you many more of years of doing what you want to do. I have been retired 12 year this coming Oct 31st. Never missed getting up everyday at 5:00am and not getting home until 6-7pm. Never missed those 2-3-4 am calls telling about the latest catastrophe, just couldn't wait until I would get to the office. It took a few years before I stopped the have too's. 😁😁 Again, Happy Anniversary on your 1st year of doing what you want to do.
You hit the nail on the head with #2. Leaving an entire society of friends with whom you shared everything, in my case for 30 years - is very difficult. I didn't really have expectations that I would stay in touch with my friends (as I was in international work - many of my friends are half the world away.) However, only in retirement did I realize what a huge role these friends played in my life for so many years, and all that evaporated. I have been retired for 6 years - and keep busy with volunteer work that I enjoy. But I miss my former life so much. On the plus side - you are also so right that in retirement you don't have a clock running to get most things done. You realize that most of that stress /pressure in your life was mostly you putting it on yourself. In retirement, I can really say "that's enough for today." That rarely happened in 30+ years of 60 hour weeks.
Congratulations on your one year retired! November will be 2 years for me. Losing your work family is so true! Love retirement and not having the stress. I am finding it hard rekindling old friendships different too. My 45 years working always focused on work. Divorced but I do have a small family I am close with. Have a great week☀️
Not sure how I stumbled upon your videos but I really enjoyed this. I have about 7 years left but I work a 4 day on 4 days off schedule and have 6 weeks off vacation so it almost feels like retirement sometimes. Been at same place for 34 years now and can’t wait to miss it. Looking forward to enjoying my classic cars and camping.
Thanks, Buzz; your videos are entertaining and inspirational! I just retired about a week ago on my 62nd birthday. Looking forward to enjoying not having a schedule. Congrats, Buzz! Workmates are sometimes closer than family. Think that’s why so many stay at work because they fear the unknown. Agree on the no-stress. Stress really screws up your health and sleep pattern. My ‘have to’s’ is that I have to get up to walk a mile down to the coffee shop to have a brew. Even though I do have great coffee at home. Your Shasta daisies look great.
Very good video. Buzz is right, Your stress levels are significantly reduced when you are retilred. And its wonderful to be able to pick and choose what you want to do during the week. I really cherish my retirement!
Some very good points there Buzz. Especially about the leaving work. I have worked in lots of places in the past. I've worked with more people than I can remember and no one stays in touch, we all just move on. I've been part time for four years now and some aspects are great. I finish at 10am and mostly the day is mine. However I start at 5am so sometimes I am very tired and fall asleep in a chair at 8.30pm which is not so good. I have been considering the leap for some time now but not certain yet. I am thinking about reducing my working days further which should not only help with the fatigue but help ease me out of the door, metaphorically speaking. thanks for the possy vibes.
I hear ya Buzz! I like watching football too. In retirement I no longer feel guilty for spending a sunny Sunday afternoon in the house. On Monday I can choose to spend the whole day outside! Gotta love retirement!
It's a good thing! Of course, since I watch the Browns it's a double whammy because I lose the day and pick up a loss. My wife always said she knew it was Sunday because of how crabby I got. Not anymore!
My last day after 40+ years @ FedEx, coming Sept. 27th 2024. I am a professional manager. Once you leave I know you are gone. Out of sight out of mind. But these points are on my mind so thanks. I am looking to re-create myself & explore who I am now.......I "have to". THX
Been retired 11.5 years now myself 😁. Before the passing of my wife we stayed busy and as you say we had each other. It's now been four years since her passing and that has changed the whole situation. But I moved to where my kids/grandkids live and that has helped thankfully.
Similar situation here, Gerard. Been ten years retired, nine years since my Julia passed away. I live near much of my family and grand kids, which is good. Took awhile to adjust to being a 'widower' living alone, but it's much better now.
Great job! I’ve been retired for 9 months now and you’re right about the health benefits from lack of stress. I guess I’m fortunate because I moved around a lot in my career so while I liked my coworkers I had plenty of experience with your point about work acquaintances moving on once you leave so I was prepared for that. It happens any time you leave a place of work, not just when you retire. Again, nice job!
Almost two years retired. I can't think of ONE thing that isn't GREAT. Not a day goes by that I don't say out loud - GOD I love NOT working anymore. You are so right about not being in the work "social club". I was surprised how fast we stopped even texting back and forth. It's life, but a reality.
I've enjoyed this channel and your content. I'll be 61 this year and I not only have to complete my home reno but also get my house paid off. Who knows when (or if) I'll be able to retire with any hope of a meaningful lifespan afterwards, but one can hope. I won't miss my job of anyone with whom I work. I've got Facebook to keep in touch with others, and two great hobbies to keep my mind active. I'm an introvert, and constant social interaction wears me out. So if I could retire today, I would.
Thank you for being here! Retiring most of the times is simple math. How much coming in, how much coming out and what is the savings bucket. The trick is how much do we need in the savings bucket. That's always the hardest answer to come up with. Buzz
Congratulations. I saw your first few videos. Glad your channel and retirement turned out well. Like you, i worked at the same company for an inordinate amount of time. While I lost many friends when I retired. I also kept many. Once or twice a year we schedule anything from a dinner to an outing where we (friends tied together by the company) can all get together.
I ended up walking home past the train station today at the time my train used to get in after work. I walked behind a whole bunch of tired people in uncomfortable clothes plodding along in the rain. I saw the same massive puddles I remember where you were likely to get soaked by passing cars. It made me so happy I haven’t had to do that for five years now. The bad stuff is nothing. Life is good 😊

Congrats on One Year. It went fast, didn't it?!?!! And they keep going faster all the time. One benefit I've noticed is that you notice the little things in life more---because you have time. There's a lot of neat things in nature that I never noticed my whole life, but I sure do now. I've seen migrating dragonflies---millions of them---in my yard last year. Never knew they migrated. It was an AWESOME spectacle.
Thank you and you're absolutely right! I have birds coming to the feeders that I never knew were in my yard. The little things you do notice more now because you have the time. Thanks for sharing!
Congrats on 1 year Buzz. I've been following you for about 9 months and really appreciate your insights. I retired 5 months ago and I'm still in the "don't know what to do" phase lol!
I retired on August 31 from being a college instructor for most of my 30+ years of teaching - didn't realize how much it wore me down mentally and physically until I stopped - it feels like a herd of elephants fell off my shoulders!
Congratulations! I retired after teaching over 31years, back in June. It’s awesome. Still getting used to not having a schedule or having to have to do something. Been busy catching up with projects that were on hold. And the stress level is way down. Days seem long because I can continue to do stuff from morning till night. I don’t have to wind down to get to bed early for work.
I also retired from academia and have no regrets. The pressures were continual and the expectations unrealistic. We are both fortunate to get out alive!
I walked away from teaching middle school on the 27 of August. Got tired of lets say self medicating to go to sleep at night. After 27 days of no sleep, I walked. Never felt better in my life. Miss teaching the kids, but the rest of the parents, grading papers, and just the daily juck can kiss grits. I’m free. Retirement is so liberating.
Buzz congrats to your first year of retirement. You will totally enjoy your next stage of your like. I started my retirement 11 years ago and the first time did not take. It took three times to get it right. I have not worked a day in 6 years. I now find my calendar more full at 74 then it was at 21. The big difference is I am doing things I love. I just enjoy your channel so very much.
Coming up to the retirement age here in GB (the beggers have moved it to 67 from 65 ) so at 63 i am looking at the end game a bit sooner than planned your video has helped a lot, loving the great attitude and the self employed bit i think i might change it to self unemployed for a bit of fun to see peoples reactions. Thanks for your great positive thoughts it is helping me make up my next move all the very best from the not so sunny at the moment Yorkshire England.
The Sunday football resonated with me. This is my first football season not working. I used to do work on Sundays to prepare for the week (had forecasts that had to be in on Monday AM) and sometimes had to forgo watching the games or if I did watch, I had work hanging over my head. This past Sunday I hosted a couple of friends at my place to watch the game and it was so glorious to just to relax and watch the games. I also agree with “reduction in stress” being the #1 benefit of retirement.
Retirement years go by very quickly. I’ve enjoyed everyday and am thankful for the opportunity. I worked with the same people for 33 years and still keep in touch with a few.
Coming up on a year on the 30th :) I left with a zoom meeeting goodbye to my team, and haven’t missed a damn thing since I left about work. Learning to enjoy my freedom.. :)
Plan a trip somewhere every month. It needn’t be expensive, even a simple roadtrip to another state can offer a stimulating and fun learning experience And planning a trip can also put you in a very positive and exciting mental state. Congratulations to you on your one year out of the rat race.
From Canada...listening and relating to everything you say. We can plan but not for the unexpected. A lot of life is written somewhere...believe we have a path we cannot see!
Been retired for almost 3 months. Loving it. The freedom to do what I want when I want is incredible. Of course with the wife in mind. Your Sunday football example is spot on. I’d always be juggling Sunday football with yard work and golf and time with the wife. Now, I have Monday and Tuesday and Wed, etc to get stuff done. Once I get into a routine and catch up on projects, I’ll look for volunteer opportunities. Great video!
I live near Yuma, Arizona. I retired 6 years ago and the wife got the house, and 1/4 of my pension. I had to sell off everything else I had, downgraded into a park model home, and have more peace in my life than I ever had being married. I started working at a Home Depot and the daily interaction has been excellent. In three years I will be 65 and my insurance will switch over to Medicare. After that, I might retire and move full time to living on the beautiful Colorado River and soak of the peace and tranquility of the desert southwest. Might even get a dog! Roy, So Cal, thanks for reading.
Sorry you learned the old adage too late: Don't get married; find a woman who hates you and buy her a house. Sounds like you're doing alright. Been retired for 13 years, never had a wife, why mess things up now? ;o) Regards from Indiana!
Same. Mine divorced right at retirement. She thought she was going to cash out. Only problem is she didn't get anything. Kept my house, retirement, pension. She had to buy other house and new car payments and has worked for 4 years. Will be working for another 20 years.
I had to give my wife $2.1 million and our house. Forced to make me work for two more years but I’m healthy again. As they saying goes, why is divorce so expensive? Because it’s worth it!
I also have twenty years at the same factory. Never knew those folks before I worked there. Will likely not see any of them after I finally cash out. Good move on the Thursday exit.
I've been retired for 1.5 years. I mostly watch youtube and facebook. But I set a rule to do at least one chore a day. Pick up dog poo, cut the grass, wash a window, vacuum the house. I also bought an e-bike pedal assist. I try to do a 20 minute ride as long as it's above 68F. I have put over 500 miles on it in two summers.
I also retired one year ago (Oct 1st) with 25+ years as a Firefighter (Captain) at 51 years old. Loving it and your spot on with your goods and bads. One thing though in the fire service. You are a family and still hang with the crew or have dinner at the fire station.
Congratulations. I'm coming up to my 1 year of retirement. Sure moneys tight, I got rid of many of my have to's. I actually did my first parachute jump this week. That's what it is for.
Great video! I finally stopped full time work at 68 not because I didn’t like what I was doing, but because the pace of business was causing me so much stress I really thought it was going to kill me (and it probably would have.) What a difference without the stress, I lost weight, got lots of sleep and actually feel better and healthier than I had for a long time.
Great video! I’ve been retired for a few months, and I totally relate to both the highs and lows you mentioned. Thanks for sharing your honest experience!
Congratulations, Buzz, on your one-year anniversary. At the end of this month, I will be retired for 11 years. It’s a joy to watch your videos, and have you verbalize the thoughts that I have had for the past 11 years. Your comments are totally spot on. Most of my friends were also coworkers and I didn’t realize that when my working career came to an end, so would most of those friendships. Without question, I am happy to be retired but sometimes during family gatherings and visits with the neighbors who are all still working I feel like kind of an outsider. At least I don’t feel so alone in these thoughts since I started watching your videos and reading other retiree’s comments.
I've got 5.75" years to retirement (67). You're making me think about the things I will want to do once I get to slow down and watch what's going on around me. Ignore the media, watch what's going on outside! I can start planning now. And even add in little parts of my plans to ease into it. Too many people retire and don't have any interests outside of work. Some of them don't last too long. I plan on lasting a LONG time! As long as I have a flexible plan.
I believe some people overthink it too. When you retire, you adapt to your new life. It may take a month or two but you we're great at work and we'll be great in retirement. Buzz

The reduction of stress.... that sounds absolutely delightful!
More than you can imagine.
I've had MUCH more stress since retiring than I ever had at work.

Good video’s Buzz 👍 I retired very early and love it. No more Monday’s, Wednesday’s Sunday evenings…… The one thing that denotes the week is - what day do you need to put the rubbish bins out!! 😂😂 Cheers Andy

So yeah, after 47 working years I’m ready for it…
Thanks for the video 👍
Congratulations on your upcoming retirement 🎉. I think you have it figured out. Great job.
You summarized well! Thank you!
Very cool man, I'm in it for 10 months now and loving it. As you said it, "no have to", very little stress, and, when I run across people still dealing with work, I think to myself; I flew the coop...

Again, Happy Anniversary on your 1st year of doing what you want to do.
Thank you for your kind thoughts. I appreciate you!
Your words are so true. I'm adapting to this new stage of my life. It's rather easy but there are some voids.
As someone who is longing for retirement and my pension, I find your channel (and humour) valuable.
I appreciate your kind words! Buzz

He's doing well! My father in law made in just past 96.
Retired ("semi" I still work about 10 hours/week) now for 4 months and I picked up a guitar to learn and am loving it. Never would have done that while working full-time.
That walking is great exercise.! My plant app says they're Sweet Coneflowers, but I know absolutely nothing about flowers. Lol
Very good video. Buzz is right, Your stress levels are significantly reduced when you are retilred. And its wonderful to be able to pick and choose what you want to do during the week. I really cherish my retirement!
You're exactly right. Thank you for the comment. Buzz

Who knows when (or if) I'll be able to retire with any hope of a meaningful lifespan afterwards, but one can hope. I won't miss my job of anyone with whom I work. That's true. It's there and we don't always realize how heavy that stress is!

Sorry about your troubles but you definitely know how to turn lemons into lemonade! Glad things are working out! Buzz

Thank you for watching. If I'm missing a subject or wo, let me know. After 11 years you definitely have the experience!
Buzz
